His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Joseph, son of David, the angel said, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus] for he will save his people from their sins. All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord s message through his prophet: 2. What does the scripture say about how we get this peace? (read it again if you need to) Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means God is with us. 3. Can anyone name another Bible story where God gives peace? When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 4. Do you need peace right now? ADVENT FOR KIDS WEEK 2 - SUMMARY SHEET 1

LESSON SCRIPT Introduction Hey everyone! I hope you are having a great day today! Are you guys getting excited about Christmas? I know I am! Well we are in week two of our Advent series. Who remembers what we talked about last week? That s right we talked about hope and who can we always put our hope in? That s right, God! He will never fail us nor forsake us. How many of you made paper chains this week? Are they hung around your room? Very cool! Well I made one too, as you can see. I ll tear them off each day until we get closer to Christmas! Memory Verse This week we will be talking about peace and to really understand how God gives us peace, I think we need to read this scripture together. Open your Bibles to Philippians 4:7. Help the kids open their Bibles and find the correct book, chapter, and verse. This will help them become familiar with their Bibles and know how to look up scripture. [When you pray] you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus What does this mean? That when we talk with God, He gives us a peace that is beyond anything we can understand. That even when life gets crazy, or something bad is happening, we can pray and talk to God and He will overwhelm our lives with His peace. ADVENT FOR KIDS WEEK 2 LESSON SCRIPT 5

Bible Story Earlier we read the story of when an angel appeared to Mary. He told Mary that she was going to have a baby. Not just any baby, but it s going to be God s son! There was just one problem: Mary wasn t married and this is a big, big, big deal to be pregnant and not married. It says in the Bible that Joseph was going to break off the engagement so they wouldn t be shamed. I m sure he was really embarrassed. Their friends and families probably would have shunned them. Can you imagine if they tried to tell their friends and family It s okay, it s God s baby! - they would have thought they were crazy! Do you think they may have needed a little peace in their lives? I think so! They needed a peace that could only come from God and nowhere else! Personal Story When I was little Tell a personal story about yourself when you needed peace. Make it real to them. Kids love when the teacher tell stories of when they were younger. Make it interesting and apply it to the lesson to answer this question: How did God give you peace? Ending So what does peace have to do with Christmas? Well, did you know that Jesus was called the Prince of Peace and in our scripture it says His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus - if there wasn t a Christmas there wouldn t be Jesus! He would have never saved us from our sins, and He wouldn t live our hearts. But since Jesus does live in our hearts, the scripture says that His peace will protect our hearts and our minds, and will overcome any situation that we may get into. Let s pray. BIBLE STORY The Birth of Jesus the Messiah Matthew 1:18-24 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord s message through his prophet: Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means God is with us. When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. ADVENT FOR KIDS ADVENT WREATH Each week we ll be lighting one candle of the advent wreath to represent each part of Advent: Hope, Joy, Peace, and Love. What you ll need: Three Purple Candles One Pink Candle One Larger White Candle Lighter Wreath Instructions: Buy a small wreath, 3 purple candles, 1 pink candle, and a white candle (which represents Jesus). Each week you ll be lighting a candle to help teach the kids the meaning of Advent. Below is a sample script of how to talk about each page of the Advent wreath. Sample Script: The season of Advent are the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve. We represent these 4 weeks by these candles and wreath. The circle wreath is used because it shows that God Himself is eternal and endless. He has no beginning and no end. The green wreath represents the hope we have that God has made us new and given us a renewed life. The candles represent the light of God coming into the world through the birth of Jesus! There are 4 outer candles that present the 4 centuries of waiting between the book of Malachi and the birth of Christ. The 5 candles also represent the following, which we will talk about in the next 4 weeks, Hope, Love, Joy, Peace, and the 5th candle represents Jesus. The light of the candle shows us that Jesus is the light of the world that comes into the darkness of our lives to bring newness, life, and hope. It also reminds us that God has called us to be a light to the world! Today we are lighting the second candle, which represents Peace. ADVENT FOR KIDS WEEK 2 ADVENT WREATH 8

OBJECT LESSON: TWO HANDS Understanding peace means also understanding the absence of peace. This part of the service will help drive home the main point, helping kids remember the lesson of Peace this week. What you ll need: All you need are your two hands. Sample Script: To understand peace sometimes you have to look at the opposite of peace. You have to think about what it feels like to be stressed or not peaceful. Have you ever rubbed your hands together? I want everyone to take their hands and put them together. Start slowly rubbing them back and forth. Sometimes in life, we have little things that come our way that take away our peace, it may not feel good but it s not that bad. Maybe we get a B on a test when we wanted an A. But then maybe our friend is really mean to us and it takes away our peace. I want you to start rubbing them faster together. Do you feel that? Do you feel how hot your hands are getting? This is what life feels like when our peace is taken away from us. God s peace is the complete opposite of this. He doesn t rub us the wrong way or steal our peace but he overflows our spirit with the peacefulness that only comes from him. ADVENT FOR KIDS WEEK 2 OBJECT LESSON 9

AT HOME ACTIVITY: PEACE SQUARES Teach the children how to play the Peace Squares game with the directions on the activity page. Also challenge the skids to memorize the scripture of the week. If they can recite the scripture the following week, reward the with a prize! DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Drive home this week s lesson by discussing the following questions with your students. Help your children tie the scripture, Bible stories and classroom activities into the main objective finding Peace in Jesus. 1. When was there a time you needed peace in your life? 2. What does the scripture say about how we get this peace? (read it again if you need to) 3. Can anyone name another Bible story where God gives peace? 4. Do you need peace right now? MEMORY VERSE Help your children learn the verse for this week by having them memorize it throughout the following week. If they can recite the verse to you the following Sunday, give them to win a prize or something special for memorizing scripture. Encourage students to complete the Peace coloring page, which is a fun way to display the memory verse. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:7 ADVENT FOR KIDS WEEK 2 10
