THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH OCTOBER 29, 2017 REFORMATION SUNDAY THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BECOMING AWARE It is not you who shape God; it is God that shapes you. If then you are the work of God, await the hand of the Artist who does all things in due season. Offer the Potter your heart, soft and tractable, and keep the form in which the Artist has fashioned you. Let your clay be moist, lest you grow hard and lose the imprint of the Potter s fingers. Irenaeus, 2 nd -Century Theologian

GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. How happy are they, who bear God in their mouths, yet happier is the heart that bear God in faith! It remains unconquered and can strike at the enemy and will be crowned at last, when it captures death. * CALL TO WORSHIP Dale Osborne One: As heirs of the new covenant announced to the people of Israel and Judah, we open ourselves to the One who promises: Many: I will put My Teaching into their inmost being and inscribe it upon their hearts, I will be their God, and they shall be My people. One: No longer will they need to teach one another, and say to one another Heed the Lord, Many: for all of them, from the least of them to the greatest, shall heed Me. All: For I will forgive their iniquities and remember their sin no more. Jeremiah 31: 31-34 * HYMN Great God, Your Love Has Called Us Here see insert * INVOCATION (unison) Stephanie Ford O God, you will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on you; for in returning and rest we shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be our strength. Give us open hearts and minds as we await the discovery of your presence. Amen. * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The peace of Christ be with you! Many: And also with you! Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace.

We find our faith with Jesus, who lives and dies and is resurrected among us; who calls us together to understand life and love as radical commitment to the Holy One and to each other; who brings wholeness and fullness to broken and empty lives. Affirmation continues on next page

We know Spirit s presence to be among us as we join in community to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our Creator. We trust that we can call upon Spirit to remake us, to show us our neighbor, to liberate us from evil, greed, and all that separates us from ourselves, others, and God. Because all things are possible through Love, we proclaim the Good News with our hearts and minds and voices that we, with all creation, continue to be formed and reformed in the image of our Maker. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION MOTET O Lord, Increase Our Faith Henry Loosemore O Lord, increase our faith. Strengthen us and confirm us in thy true faith; endue us with wisdom, charity, chastity and patience in all our adversities. Sweet Jesu, say Amen. WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table celebrate the 26 th birthday of Hannah Ruth Osborne. Her parents love her dearly. About today s Guest Preacher: Carol s first visited Binkley as a UNC freshman. Her only memory from that day--climbing into the back car seat of the kind couple giving her a ride (recently discovered to have been Nancy and Neal Cheek). Though only visiting a few times, she had contact with Binkley members: Joe Clontz and Bob Phillips, her Baptist Campus Ministers; Dot and Jim Cansler annually invited her to dinner with other children of their friends; Fred and Sue Schroeder hosted the Junior Marshals dinner; and Robert Kepner (Director of Residence Life) received copious correspondence from her requesting stoves be placed in the basement of Spencer Dorm and advocating preservation of the original stone walls surrounding the dorm. Following graduation from Princeton Theological Seminary, she vowed not to take an associate staff position (too many horror stories from friends) and, new to the American Baptist Churches, had concluded she d not be returning to the south. Spirit surprised her with a call to be Associate Pastor at the church she d visited during college. She learned from Bob Seymour and every member minister at Binkley, and also met her life partner, Matthew Moffitt. After serving churches in Michigan, Maryland, DC, Virginia, and NC, she recently retired as Director of the UNC Nicotine Dependence Program. She and Matthew delight (most times) in having four generations of family near, and have embraced their new role as grandparents with utter joy. About today s liturgies: The Invocation and Affirmation of Faith were used in the service of Ordination for Carol Ripley on October 29, 1978. The Affirmation of Faith is adapted from the one Bruce Page (also an Associate Minister of Binkley) and Diana Houston authored. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by the Choral Scholars. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before the service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, and Hannah Wall. * The Congregation standing as each is able.
