Lent Midweek 2 Blessed Are the Penitent Psalm 32 February 26, 2015 HYMN Jesus Sat with His Disciples 1 Jesus sat with His disciples On a mountainside one day; As the crowds of people gathered, He began to teach and say: Blessèd are the poor in spirit, Heaven s kingdom they will share. Blessèd are the sad and mourning, Joy and comfort will be theirs. 2 Blessèd are the meek and humble, All the earth to them is willed. Those who hunger to be holy, They are bless d and will be filled. Yes, the merciful are blessèd, Mercy will to them be shown. And the pure in heart are blessèd, They have eyes for God alone. 3 Blessèd are God s sons and daughters, Making peace where there is strife. Blessèd are the persecuted, Who for righteousness lose life; Their reward is great in heaven, In the kingdom up above So be glad to share My suff ring And rejoice to know My love. Text (sts. 1 3): 1997 Stephen P. Starke Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, number 100012765. INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES P: Even when we were dead in our trespasses, C: God made us alive together with Christ. P: By grace you have been saved through faith. C: It is the gift of God. P: Jesus said, I came not to save the righteous, C: but sinners.

P: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, C: whose sin is covered. P: Let us then in all penitence confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Silence for reflection and self-examination.) P: I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God Almighty to have mercy on me, forgive me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen. C: The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all your sins. Amen. C: I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God Almighty to have mercy on me, forgive me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen. P: The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all your sins. Amen. HYMN Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing 1 Jesus, grant that balm and healing In Your holy wounds I find, Ev ry hour that I am feeling Pains of body and of mind. Should some evil thought within Tempt my treach rous heart to sin, Show the peril, and from sinning Keep me from its first beginning. 2 Should some lust or sharp temptation Fascinate my sinful mind, Draw me to Your cross and passion, And new courage I shall find. Or should Satan press me hard, Let me then be on my guard, Saying, Christ for me was wounded, That the tempter flee confounded. Text and Music: Public domain 2

SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER FROM SUNDAY P: Let us pray. O Lord God, You led Your ancient people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. C: Guide the people of Your Church that following our Savior we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. PRAYER FOR TODAY P: O Lord God, You sent Your Son so that our transgressions might be forgiven, our sins covered. C: Grant us Your Holy Spirit so that we might recognize the blessedness in which we live, and spend each day in penitence, peace, and joy; P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST READING 2 Samuel 12:1 13 Lector: And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, P: There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him. Lector: Then David s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, C: As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. Lector: Nathan said to David, P: You are the man! Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. And I gave you your master s house and your master s wives into your arms and gave you the house of 3

Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun. Lector: David said to Nathan, C: I have sinned against the LORD. Lector: And Nathan said to David, P: The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. P: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Ephesians 2:1 10 Lector: And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience C: among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, Lector: carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. C: But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ Lector: by grace you have been saved C: and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Lector: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. C: For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Lector: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God. THIRD READING Mark 2:15 17 P: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God. 4

HYMN Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing 3 If the world my heart entices With the broad and easy road, With seductive, sinful vices, Let me weigh the awful load You were willing to endure. Help me flee all thoughts impure And to master each temptation, Calm in prayer and meditation. 4 Ev ry wound that pains or grieves me By Your wounds, Lord, is made whole; When I m faint, Your cross revives me, Granting new life to my soul. Yes, Your comfort renders sweet Ev ry bitter cup I meet; For Your all-atoning passion Has procured my soul s salvation. 5 O my God, my rock and tower, Grant that in Your death I trust, Knowing death has lost its power Since You crushed it in the dust. Savior, let Your agony Ever help and comfort me; When I die be my protection, Light and life and resurrection. Psalm 32 5 Text and Music: Public domain P: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. C: For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. P: I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to You at a time when You may be found; C: surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. You are a hiding place for me; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with shouts of deliverance.

P: I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. C: Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! SERMON OFFERING PRAYERS P: Let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: These and any other things You would have us ask of You, heavenly Father, grant to us for the sake of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. THE LORD S PRAYER WORDS OF INSTITUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMN O Sacred Head, Now Wounded 1 O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown. O sacred Head, what glory, What bliss, till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine. 2 What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered Was all for sinners gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favor, And grant to me Thy grace. 3 What language shall I borrow 6

To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever! And should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never, Outlive my love for Thee. 4 Be Thou my consolation, My shield, when I must die; Remind me of Thy passion When my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, Upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfold Thee. Who dieth thus dies well. Text (sts. 1 4): 1941 Concordia Publishing House Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, number 100012765. COLLECT FOR PEACE P: O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works, give to us, Your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. LUTHER S EVENING PRAYER P: Let us pray. C: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen. BENEDICTION P: God go with you on your penitential journey, before you to prepare a path of service, above you so that you need not fear, and within you to move you to love and good works, and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit bless you now and forever. 7

HYMN To Thee, Omniscient Lord of All 1 To Thee, omniscient Lord of all, In grief and shame I humbly call; I see my sins against Thee, Lord, The sins of thought and deed and word. They press me sore; I cry to Thee: O God, be merciful to me! 2 O Lord, my God, to Thee I pray: O cast me not in wrath away! Let Thy good Spirit ne er depart, But let Him draw to Thee my heart That truly penitent I be: O God, be merciful to me! 3 O Jesus, let Thy precious blood Be to my soul a cleansing flood. Turn not, O Lord, Thy guest away, But grant that justified I may Go to my house at peace with Thee: O God, be merciful to me!
