Munt Maunganui is lcated n the east cast f the Nrth Island. We knw that a tsunami will ccur in the future but n ne knws when. This assessment is based n a theretical tsunami being caused by a 9.0 earthquake near the Kermedec Trench. The Ministry f Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) is an rganisatin that wrks t make New Zealand cmmunities resilient t hazards and disasters. It needs t knw where and what the effects f a tsunami might be. It als needs a reprt that shws peple the type and the extent f the effects f a tsunami in the Munt Maunganui area. Imagine that yu have the jb f prducing this reprt fr CDEM. Yur task is t: prduce maps/images that shw where the effects f the tsunami will be write a reprt abut the effects f the tsunami n peple, the ecnmy, and the transprt netwrks in Munt Maunganui. Yu will wrk individually t prduce several images/maps that will make up a layut n ne side f an A3 piece f paper r in the frm f an A4 bklet. Yu will hand in yur layut and yur written reprt. Task 1: Set up Ggle Earth A. Create a flder In yur wrkspace, create a flder where yu can save yur data. B. Set up Ggle Earth Open Ggle Earth. Create a new flder titled Munt Maunganui Tsunami by right clicking n My Places à Add àflder. C. Save yur wrk Make sure that all f the features yu create have been dragged int the flder in yur wrkspace. T save yur wrk in the Munt Maunganui Flder, right click the flder and chse Save place as. The prcess f the tsunami Fly t Munt Maunganui and make sure that Brders and Labels is turned n The epicentre f the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that triggers the tsunami is lcated west f Cheeseman Island in the Pacific Ocean. In the Search bx, enter this as 30 30 42.20S, 178 28 56.73E. Fly t this lcatin. Create a place mark t shw the lcatin f the epicentre and the magnitude. (Yu shuld be west f Cheeseman Island.) Use the Ruler t draw a line frm the epicentre t Munt Maunganui nte the distance in km. Label the line with a Placemark that the tsunami travels at 450km/hr in deep water
Create ther Placemarks clser t the cast nting that the tsunami slws t 10km/hr as it nears the cast (within 2km) and that the range in height f the tsunami is between 4 and 6.75m. Calculate the time that the tsunami will take t arrive at Munt Maunganui and use this in yur reprt in terms f time that the residents f Munt Maunganui have t respnd/evacuate the area. Shw the fllwing evacuatin znes fr; Matakana Island The Prt f Tauranga The whle area f Munt Maunganui (The land area east f the Harbur) In the Munt Maunganui area there are tw high areas that will nt be inundated by the 6.75 metre tsunami, Maua and Hpukire (Mt Maunganui and Mt Drury). Fr these tw areas create tw paque clumn plygns. Under Altitude, select Relative t the grund and enter 232m as the height fr Maua and 21m as the height fr Hpukire. Extend the sides t the grund. Nte the impact f the tsunami n the landscape and the shape f the land area that makes up Munt Maunganui. Key Facts Munt Maunganui and Papama wuld be devastated if an "extreme" tsunami hit the Western Bay, frcing 35,000 peple t flee fr their lives. It wuld smash thrugh Tauranga's entire lw-lying castal strip, inundating abut 19,000 hmes and 2000 cmmercial premises. It wuld have a majr impact n the lcal transprt netwrk. The Prt f Tauranga is the largest prt in the cuntry in terms f ttal carg vlume, and the secnd largest in terms f cntainer thrughput. Tauranga airprt is the fifth busiest airprt in New Zealand in terms f aircraft mvements, with 86,935 mvements during 2010. This places it just behind Hamiltn airprt. State Highway 2 and Trans Rail are an integral links fr Tauranga and the Bay f Plenty t the rest f the cuntry. The prspect has left Civil Defence planners praying they get enugh warning t carry ut an rderly mass evacuatin. Calculatins were based n a histrical "wrst case" 4m tsunami and an "extreme case" 6.75m surge.
