Page 2 DEAN S MESSAGE Today s Martyrdom June 2012 The words we have heard so often as Orthodox Christians are: Martyrdom and Martyr. Simply stated a Martyr is a witness. It is witnessing Christ and His church. Martyrs in the early church paid a heavy price for their witness of the faith. Their life, family and fortune was sacrificed for the glory of the Lord. Our Martyrdom today in America seems to have lost its meaning and become abstract and irrelevant. What does it mean to be a Martyr today? It means that we can be witnesses of Christ and His church. Our faith depends not only on words and intentions but on prayerful spirit filled action. No one is asked to forfeit life and family for the faith. What is asked for today from the faithful is Orthodoxia (correct worship and praise) and as important Orthopraxia (correct or good works). It is living out our faith in our actions. Financial support of the Cathedral ministry through yearly stewardship gifts, inclusions in wills and trusts can also be a witness of support and love. Imagine how much can be done if people learned the joy of giving the joy of believing the joy of belonging... and encouraged others to participate. Imagine what institutions and programs could be developed if people seriously supported the financial needs of the church. Imagine if people gave in proportion to their resources and means, what could be accomplished in making Saint Sophia truly a living and vibrant Cathedral, pulsing with the goodness of the Word of God. A living vibrant Cathedral reaches out to all and is a beacon of light to the Los Angeles area and beyond. A living Cathedral would be the focus of Christ-like activity seven days a week with programs that serve our own and society in general. We have built and will continue to build ministries, by the Grace of God and the generous giving of our people. As many of us prepare for summer vacations and holidays let us not forget the support of our Cathedral. If some have not yet pledged through the 2012 stewardship program, please do so by filling out a pledge card or by calling our office. To those who have pledged we pray that your commitment is honored on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis or in a manner appropriate to your situation. All can give something. All in one form or another can participate in holy giving. Please remember your church and provide for her. BE A FINANCIAL STEWARD. Consider the church in your will and financial planning program. And don t forget your church attendance. Prayer and worship are always in season. May God bless all with a wonderful and restful summer for soul and body. In Christ,

June 2012 Page 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, if any one thirst, let him come to me and drink I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but he will have the light of life - Pentecost The month of June brings many wonderful events for our Cathedral. Pentecost will be celebrated on June 3 and on June 4 we will celebrate the feast day/name day of our Cathedral, St. Sophia. Both services are glorious and I hope that you will try and attend. For those who have not yet sent in their pledge, please take a moment to fill out your commitment card and send it in before you go on summer vacation In addition, during the month of June we have been doing some necessary sprucing up of our Cathedral and the grounds. The chandeliers were cleaned and the crystal is now shiny and bright. Thank-you to Alec Haidos and Jimmy Karatsikis for coordinating this effort! June also heralds the beginning of summer and the end of the school year. The 2012 graduation ceremony for our Hellenic Academy will be held on Saturday June 9 with a wonderful program of Greek song and skits and a pizza party for the children and their families. Congratulations and gratitude to our Hellenic Academy Director, Dr. Andri Christodoulidou and her Academy instructors for their dedication in educating our children in our Greek language and heritage. The graduation ceremony for our Sunday School will be Sunday June 10 and will be celebrated with a Paniyiri after church. The In-and-Out Burger truck will be there serving up Double Doubles and Cheeseburgers to all who pre-purchase tickets for the event. Congratulations and sincere appreciation to Eleni Yokas, our Sunday School Director, and to all of our Sunday School Teachers who devoted their time and love to our students, instructing them in our Orthodox faith throughout the year. In a just a couple of months our great LA Greek Fest will be returning to our Cathedral grounds. This grand and recognized premier event for the city of Los Angeles is rapidly approaching. The winning team of Ted and Jan Pastras, our L.A. Greek Fest chairpersons, and their committee are working hard to organize the affair and ensure its splendid success. Please take the time to sign up to help underwrite the food items which are listed in this issue and please send in your booth sponsorships and volunteer forms. It takes an entire parish to put on a festival! In closing, I wanted to share with you that Fr. John Bakas and I will be representing the Cathedral at the Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Phoenix, Arizona in July. I will present a formal report at the November General Assembly meeting. More details will be forthcoming. Congratulations to all of our Graduates and Happy Father s day to all of our Dads. As we enter the midpoint of the year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Stewards for their support and generosity. To date we have 513 families who have submitted their pledge and we have reached 45% of our stewardship goal. Thank-you!. In Christ s Service and Love, Loula B. Moschonas, Saint Sophia Parish Council

Page 4 June 2012 STEWARDSHIP Believe and Belong through Christian Stewardship Christian Stewardship is what we do after we say we believe. Our Church encourages all our Parishioners to be responsible caretakers or active Stewards of our Saint Sophia Cathedral, so that services and ministries are available to all who need them. All of our Parishioners use our parish services when they need them, even those considered inactive Stewards. We are grateful to the families and individuals, who have made a stewardship pledge to the parish this year, and thank them for their kind generosity. June 2012 Page 5 PHILOPTOHOS NEWS DEBUTANTE BALL: Plans are underway for our next big event! Chairman Katrina Beers is working hard preparing for the St. Sophia Debutante Presentation Ball on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Please mark your calendars and join us at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel for this spectacular evening! We have a group of lovely young women to present and we are very excited for their big night! MOTHER OF THE YEAR: We had a wonderful celebration at our Mother s Day Luncheon and Fashion Show honoring Mother of the Year Bess Pappas! Philoptohos offers it s deepest thanks to the committee who worked so hard for this day! To Judie Christopoulos and Tricia Kremer a huge THANK YOU for all your work putting the day together! To committee members Mary Gallanis, Marianna Politis, Sophie Mastor, Helene Ballas, Pauline Evangelatos, Sonia Stathos, Olga Jordan, Mary-Kay Demetriou, Christina Peratsakis, Tina Callas, Jeanine Dalis, Patricia Mentas, Bessie Politis, Scarlett Billis, Dorothea Ales and Jayne Poulos thank you - thank you for everything you did. Of course, there were many extra helpers and we thank all of you for stepping in and lending a hand. MOTHER S DAY: Mothers of children at The Salvin School, which cares for children who are physically and mentally disabled, were treated to a Mother s Day breakfast and a rose delivered by their children. Our team supplied the classroom teachers with ribbons and roses. The teachers helped the children tie a ribbon to a rose for each child to give it to their mom. A light breakfast was served to all the active mothers who were there, and everyone had a beautiful morning. Thank you to Maria Toczek, Olga Jordan and Paula Roussos for arranging this beautiful event once again. These mothers deserve and need the special attention on this day. Being the parent of a special needs child is a very difficult and demanding job that no one is ever prepared for. Father Allan, Presvytera Danita, Georgia Vasila, Vicki Deriyadis and Ourania Giagtzoglou all came to help that morning, and we thank them for their work and support. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGENCY: Thank you to everyone who donated towards the collection for the Domestic Violence Agency. We received over 100 packages of socks and undergarments! This agency shelters women and children from abusive husbands and fathers in safe house locations and tries to help them re-locate, find jobs and hopefully stop the cycle of abuse. Thank you for helping Philoptohos reach out to these victims and show them they are remembered and cared about. Summer is rapidly approaching. Our meetings are over until September. When we have planned the meeting calendar we will publish it in future newsletters. Please be sure to read the weekly bulletin for updated meeting information. We no longer send out post cards because of the cost. Even though we do not have meetings throughout the summer, we are always available to help anyone who needs us. You may always leave a message for Philoptohos with the church receptionist. The National Philoptohos convention, will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, June 30 th through July 4 th. We look forward to receiving new information from National that we will report to the chapter upon our return. With love in Christ s service, Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

In His Service, Mary Morrison Philoptohos VIP President ANNUAL APPEAL LETTERS: The response from the Annual Appeal letters mailed prior to Christmas is awesome! Thank you for your support and contributions thus far. Please send in your donation, if you have not already done so, in order that we may honor our commitments to our projects. Thank you so much! USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Thank you for all the generous donations of used clothing during the Pascha season and beyond. This is a year-long project, so please continue your donations as there are still many we need to reach. Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. The two new receptacles for "used clothing" and "canned goods" are working great. They are located side by side, in the general area of the chapel. Thank you! GET ON THE BUS: Once again the response to this project enabled us to sponsor a bus for $1500 again this year. On Saturday, May 5th, 5 bus loads of children from across California visited their incarcerated mothers at the California institute for Women. Over 6 weekends in May & June, 52 additional bus loads of children will travel via bus to see their mothers and fathers at 9 other prisons in the state. Thank you for making this a special day for so many children! Thank you. THE WALL-LAS MEMORIAS PROJECT: Since the dedication of the AIDS Monument, The WALL has evolved into a social action organization that promotes wellness and prevents illness among Latino populations affected by HIV/AIDS. We continue to support Richard Zaldivar, Executive Director, in the quest to achieve the same goals we have for continued AIDS education, awareness and prevention. STREET OUTREACH: Our own Dr. Nikos Stefanidis, a Staff Psychologist at Children s Hospital, L.A., counsels and guides the throwaway children at night on Santa Monica Boulevard. With support from Philanthropia, Dr. Nikos purchases articles of clothing/personal items to try to encourage these young people to get off the street, accept shelter, care and rehabilitation at various housing centers in the city and county. PHILANTHROPIA WEBSITE: The Winter issue of the PHILANTHROPIA Newsletter is out and will be on the website: www.philanthropiaministry.org We thank Perry Lambert who is coordinating our website. (We apologize for the delay of the spring issue which should be out shortly.) God bless you! Father Peter

June 2012 Page 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS HELLENIC ACADEMY NEWS Another academic year will soon come to an end. On Saturday June 9 th, the students of the Hellenic Academy will receive their promotion certificates and present a program to mark the completion. Parents, teachers, and our Saint Sophia parish are so very proud of them. We will applaud and cheer them for this achievement; because it is indeed an achievement. After all, our children commit many precious Saturday mornings into learning the Greek language and to diving into the deep waters of the Greek heritage. It is not my purpose to present an account of the year s goals and/or achievements. Neither to refer to the celebrations and/ or events the academy held. I will only mention that it has been our aim, and now a hope, that the children not only have enhanced and expanded their language skills and appreciation of the culture, but they have also accumulated some valuable experiences. They have felt, for instance, the warmth of companionship in classroom and recess activities and have sensed the embrace and love of our clergy. We have a good faith that has touched them by the peace of participating in the liturgy and enchanted by the colors, the smells, and the sounds. The sense of belonging into a community contributes to a healthy growth. Regardless if one returns to school, this is a collection of experiences that cannot be taken away. At any point in life, it can be a first aid box to return to and open in difficult moments. Of course, various people need to work hard in making our program a reality. And if now, reaching the end, while reflecting back to it they can be honestly confident of what has been accomplished, as it all becomes worthy and rewarding. I am thankful and deeply grateful to one and all who lovingly assisted the academy throughout this process and contributed positively towards realizing its aims; behind and not behind the scenes You know who you are. Thank you, Andri Christodoulidou, Hellenic Academy Director
