In today s Gospel Jesus is challenged about the greatest commandment. Listen carefully to the language in today s first reading from Exodus, which prepares us to hear Jesus answer. The first reading addressed some of the political situations in our own nation, in our world today. Jesus simple reply, rooted in this Old Testament Mandate, is a challenge to all of us. Love of God and love of neighbor have not changed in two thousand years. God calls us by name In today s first reading, God tells Cyrus, I call you by your name. I once walked into a church just after Easter and saw a huge banner bearing the words, Barbara, I have called you by name, My heart skipped a beat! I later lea rne d tha t Barbara was that year s sole RCIA candidate, but for a brief moment the message was mine. God had singled me out! What would he ask of me? In today s gospel, Matthew tells a story which had political implications in Jesus time. In an attempt to trap Jesus, the Pharisees questioned whether or not the Jews should be paying taxes to their Roman conquerors. Surely whatever he replied would offend someone. However, Jesus calmly told them: give God what is God s due and give Caesar what is his due. Jesus message could be similarly interpreted for our time. We are called to love, honor and obey God, our Creator. We are also meant to have our feet firmly planted in the world we live in, gifting others with our love, care and compassion. God does not call to us with messages splashed across banners. God speaks to us in the silence of our hearts, inviting us to be God s presence in our families, parishes, and communities. If we listen, we will often hear God call us by our name. ~ by Barbara d Artois~ 0819 St. Andrew 2

Sponsored by: Diocese of Palm Beach Office of Marriage & Family Life & Diocese of Palm Beach Chapter of the Catholic Grandparents Association. for more information: 561-775-9524 or cloh@diocesepb.org Jesus, I praise you for your generosity. give me the same concern for the poor and needy around me. Lord, help me to open my heart and hands to them! Today we honor all the saints who form so great a cloud of witnesses for us and for the whole Church ( Hebrews 12:1). We don t often think about it, but millions of holy men and women are in heaven right now, praying for us and cheering us on. If you could hear them, they might be saying, Don t give up! Stay close to Jesus! It really is worth it! For the most part, these saints are people just like us, only now they re in heaven. their lives mirrored ours0 our desires, our doubts and our struggles to follow Jesus. Are you a wife, a mother, or a teacher? Then look to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Are you praying for family members who have fallen away from the faith? Ask St. Monica to pray for them also. do you struggle dividing your time between prayer, work, and play? Let St. Benedict help you. Today s feast remind us that the saints in heaven aren t just the famous ones like Mother Teresa or Francis of Assisi. The list includes our deceased parents, grandparents, old friends, and former pastors. Those who were closest to us in life are also close in spirit to us now a sort of heavenly support group! They re looking down on us with love and concern, and they want nothing more than to see us grow into Christ s love more and more each day. Isn t God s plan wonderful? He has already given us the gift of life. He has given us families and friends. He has given us our own unique set of gifts and talents, which we can use to glorify him. He has even given us the gift of salvation, along with the sacraments and the life of grace to sustain us. And still that is not enough. In addition to all these gifts, he has called us to be with him in heaven forever! Thank you, Lord, for all the saints who pray for me and help me every day. I praise and glorify you, Lord, for preparing me a place with them, where I can worship you for all eternity. 0819-St Andrew 4
