Before and after school by the school office. This weekend we celebrate Labor Day as a nation. For many families this will be the final weekend away before the buzz of activity that marks the beginning of school, sports, religious education and all things busy. The importance of rest in a nation of work is especially important for we who are persons of faith and who recognize the reality of God. Sunday is designed by God to be a mini-labor Day for each of us. A chance to refocus on that which is to be of primary importance: our relationship of love with God and with others. Each Sunday is to be a time to stop and breath. The pull of work can be great and yet we must try to resist. If you are reading this, you are doing a pretty good job, you are already taking time for God at Mass. What work are we permitted to do on Sunday? Ideally we would try to refrain from all activity that would bring us the stress of labor. The moment whatever we are doing begins to raise our blood pressure, we are probably beginning to depart from the 3 rd Commandment, Keep holy the Sabbath. Some persons will remark that getting work done on Sunday makes the rest of the week easier but did we take the time with God and with others that was originally envisioned by God? It is here where the blessing of God was designed to lie. This sort of blessing must be sought and engaged. Not easy. If you feel as though you have to get something done on Sunday, then perhaps the best thing to do is to limit your activity. Our top priority is of course to get to Mass if we are physically able. Then with the time that remains, to allow ourselves the time to tackle whatever is pressing but then return to the Sabbath. A person should be able to look back upon the day and call it a true Sabbath, a time spent with God and love in some fashion. It should not look like a Wednesday off of work. What about those who have to work on Sunday? Every effort needs to be made to fulfill one s Sunday obligation to attend Mass and fulfill the commandment to worship, honor and love our Creator. This may mean Saturday mass, or one of the Sunday masses. Going a different day of the week is not Sunday Mass. If our job consistently keeps us from Sunday Mass, then we need to have a difficult look at our job and consider how we can change it or move out of it. This can be very difficult. Many persons never intend to leave God behind, rather we simply drift away, one week after the next, until he seems so foreign and different. Sometimes persons don t realize this has happened until a crisis strikes. It is at those moments that persons find themselves reaching out for God and trying to draw strength from a spiritual life that was never really engaged. This can be a very frustrating experience. The Sabbaths of today prepare and build us not only for the difficulties of tomorrow but also build within us a proper perspective on the good things of the current day. They help us recognize that all good things come from God and will find their true home in him forever. Sabbaths are essential for a rich human life. Labor is a great gift of God providing the opportunity to live creatively and with satisfaction, but without rest in God, it can become all-consuming and in the end, non-redeeming. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
