A Mock Trial based on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs
Instructions The class will be divided into three teams: the prosecution team, the defense team, and the legislative team. The prosecution and defense will be given a list of evidence that was discovered by the police. There is enough evidence provided that would work for either side. Your task is to review the evidence and come up with opening and closing statements based on evidence and a line of questioning that will prove the Al T. Wolf is either guilty or not guilty depending on your side. The prosecution needs to prove that A. Wolf murdered both Straw Pig and Stick Pig without a doubt.
Instructions The defense team must create doubt that A. Wolf is guilty. They do not need to prove that he is entirely innocent just that he might be! As a team, you will need to sift through the evidence and decide how to structure your arguments. The best way to do this is to string evidence together to create a theory. The legislative team will be creating newspaper articles to promote the court dates and well as completing persuasion maps to ensure that the jury can see both sides of the argument!
List of Characters Legislative Team: Judge- Decides which disputed facts (evidence) may be presented to the jury. Provides jury instructions and explains what the applicable law is to the jury. Keeps order in the court. Bailiff- Keeps order in the court. Responsible for making sure that the classroom is run like a true courtroom (i.e. "Everyone rise! The honorable Judge is presiding!) Assists judge. Cop- You responded to the call to the Brick Pig's house. When you arrived, you saw the wolf making a scene and took him to jail. Jury Members- Responsible for establishing pro and con chart saying why the evidence makes them guilty or innocent (5 Pros and 5 Cons)
List of Characters Prosecution Team: Prosecution Lawyer- Address the jury. Present the arguments. Question witnesses in order to convince the jury of the defendant's guilt. Spokesperson for prosecution team Prosecution Team (4)- Works with prosecution lawyer to come up with a one page opening statement and one page closing argument. Works with prosecution lawyer to try to convince the jury that Alexander Wolf is guilty. Straw Pig- You claim to be the first to be killed by A. Wolf on his rampage. Your house made of straw just couldn't hold up to Al's sneeze. Stick Pig- Your house was the second stop on Al's journey for a cup of sugar. You told him to "Go away!" but his sneeze was too powerful for your house as well. You ended up dead of a yet undetermined cause.
List of Characters Prosecution Team: Brick Pig- According to Al, you are a "rude little porker." You insulted the wolf's grandmother and told her she could go sit on a pin! How rude! When the cops arrived, they arrested the wolf at your house. News reporter- You wrote about Al's alleged murder in the local newspaper. He claims that it was sensationalist, but you say it was just the facts.
List of Characters Defense Team: Defense Lawyer- Address the jury. Present the arguments. Question witnesses in order to convince the jury of the defendant's innocence. Spokesperson for defense team. Defense Team (4)- Works with defense lawyer to come up with a one page opening statement and one page closing argument. Works with defense lawyer to try to convince the jury that Alexander Wolf is innocent. Grandma Wolf- All you needed was a cup of sugar from your poor, innocent grandson, Alexander. Instead, you are now being asked to appear in court as a character witness for your grandson. Alexander T. Wolf- Claims to be going to get a cup of sugar for his Grandmother's birthday cake. He also claims to be feeling a little under the weather, so much so that he had to sneeze and blew the straw and stick pigs house down. Crime Scene Evidence 1. Straw Pig and Stick pig were both eaten by Mr. Al Wolf. Since Mr. Wolf ate their bodies, there was no crime scene evidence of foul play besides what Mr. Wolf has admitted to the police. 2. There were straw and sticks found matted into Mr. Wolf s hair. It was covered in blood, but so was everything else around it. The doorknob to the brick house had several sets of fingerprints, including Al Wolf s, the policeman s, and both stick and straw pig s. 3. The coroner concluded that pigs had been dead before they were eaten, but without the body could not conclude a cause of death. The three brothers had recently taken out a life insurance policy that named the sole survivor as the beneficiary. 4. The ground around all three homes was covered in pig s blood, but it was also very sticky with sugar granules.
Crime Scene Evidence 5. The wolf s footprints were found all over on the sticky floor at the crime scene, along with the footprints of many other people. 6. There was no sign of a break-in at the Straw or Stick House. 7. The jars of sugar were found in the remains of both residences. 8. A bottle of NyQuil: Cold and Flu was found on the path between both houses. 9. The elastic was found to be broken on Mr. Wolf s pants when they were seized at the police station. Investigators concluded that they could not prove when this happened.
Other Evidence 10. Al. T. Wolf had a doctor s appointment the week before the crime took place. The doctor wrote him a prescription for allergy medicine, but requested a follow-up with an anger therapist. 11. Stick pig has a long history of being rude to his neighbors. In fact, his neighbor previously filed a complaint with the landlord accusing the stick pig of verbal harassment. 12. Inside Al s home, investigators found a half made cake batter. Its ingredients contained eggs, flour, and bunny ears. There was also an empty sugar package found at the scene. 13. Three days after the death of his two brothers, Brick Pig began selling a tellall novel about his life and how he was coping with their deaths. It was available on his website, www.allpigsgotoheaven.com/thetruth The book contained information that was later published in newspaper articles by the reporter..
Other Evidence 14. During a search of Al s home, investigators did NOT find any sugar. They did, however, find a letter that had not yet been sent wishing Grandma Wolf happy birthday. 15. Brick Pig was the only person other than Mr. Wolf who had contact with Stick and Straw Pig on the day of their deaths. 16. Two days after the crime, Grandma Wolf was seen driving a brand new red convertible Mustang..
Witness Testimony 17. The news reporter printed that Brick Pig was in desperate in need of money because the bank was going to repossess his house because it cost too much money to build.. 18. Al Wolf sticks to the story that both pigs were already dead upon his arrival. He maintains that he only went to their house to get a cup of sugar and never forced entry. He maintains that he was never inside the houses. 19. Grandma Wolf says that Al was going to come to her house later that evening to celebrate her birthday. **All other witness testimony must be based on The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. You may use both the text and illustrations to prep your witnesses..
