M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 45 Old Testament Joash II Chronicles 22-24 24 Memory Verse: So be careful. When you think you are standing firm, you might fall. (I Corinthians 10:12 NIrV) Goals 1. Understand that Joash s aunt and uncle saved Joash s life. 2. Recognize that Joash grew up in the temple. 3. Learn that Joash repaired the temple. 4. Understand that God deserted Joash because he deserted God. Last week we learned that King Jehoshaphat was scared. He prayed and asked God for help. Jehoshaphat did not only ask for help, he also praised God by telling God how good He was and all the wonderful things God had done. Jehoshaphat obeyed God and trusted God. God performed a miracle and caused their enemies to destroy each other. Read the Bible READ: II Chronicles 24:1 :1-13 13 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Joash was a special little boy when he was born. He was a prince. He was the son of King Ahaziah. (II Chronicles 22:11) God watched over him because He had a special plan for his life. One day, King Ahaziah died. Then mean people took over the palace. Joash s aunt, Jehosheba, and uncle, Jehoiada, hid him in their home. Jehosheba was the sister of King Ahaziah. Jehoiada was the priest. He and Jehosheba lived in the temple. They protected Joash in their home because they knew he would be the next king. They took care of him and he grew up from a baby to a little boy. (II Chronicles 22:10-12) Joash s uncle, Jehoiada, was a man who loved God. He taught Joash about God. They would probably talk together and sing songs to God. One day when Joash was seven years old, his uncle, Jehoiada, knew it was time to tell the country that the rightful king was alive. (II Chronicles 23:1-11) When the people heard the news, they were so excited! They cheered for their new king! It was a very happy time. (II Chronicles 23:11) Joash s uncle and aunt helped him rule the country. They listened to God and did things God s way. (II Chronicles 24:1-2) When Joash grew into a man, he saw how God s temple needed repair. He wanted it to look like new again. He asked the preachers and teachers to collect money from the people and repair the temple. (II Chronicles 24:4) However, the preachers and teachers did not repair the temple, so Joash asked that a wooden chest be made to collect money for the temple Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 45 Page 2

Joash Bible Facts 1. Joash s aunt and uncle protected him. 2. Joash was seven when he became king. 3. Joash repaired the temple. 4. Joash and the people deserted God, so He deserted them. repairs. The people were happy to bring their money. They did it regularly. They collected a great amount of money. (II Chronicles 24:5-11) The king and Jehoiada would give the money to the men who were repairing the temple. (II Chronicles 24:12) The men who were in charge of the work did their best. The repairs went very well under them. They rebuilt God's temple. They did it in keeping with its original plans. They made it stronger. (II Chronicles 24:13) Now God s people could come and worship in a beautiful place! After Jehoiada died, Joash and the officials of Judah forgot about God. They worshipped other statues of other gods. (II Chronicles 24:17-18) God was not pleased with the people. He sent a prophet to tell them that he was not pleased. The people would not listen. (II Chronicles 24:19) God said that since the people had deserted Him, He would desert them. God allowed their enemies to defeat them. (II Chronicles 24:20-27) Review 1. Who protected Joash? (Jehosheba and Jehoiada protected Joash.) 2. When did he become king? (Joash was seven when he became king.) 3. What did Joash do when he grew up? (Joash repaired the temple.) 4. What happened later? (Joash and the people deserted God so He deserted them.) Do You Know Jesus? Sin separates us from God who is pure and clean. God saw our sin and found a way to help us. Jesus, God s Son, was sent to help clean up our sin by dying on the cross for our sin. (John 3:16) If we believe in Him and ask Him to forgive all our wrongs, Jesus makes us pure and comes into our hearts. He promises to stay with us forever. (Romans 10:9-10; I John 1:9) Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to save us from sin. 3. Ask God to help you be faithful to Him all of your life. 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to be faithful to God. Application Joash s aunt and uncle saved his life. He grew up in the temple because his uncle, Jehoiada, was the priest. Joash repaired the temple when he was older. But when Jehoiada died, Joash and the people deserted God and worshipped idols. Because the people deserted God, He allowed their enemies to defeat them. So be careful. When you think you are standing firm, you might fall. (I Corinthians 10:12 NIrV) God wants us to be faithful to Him to the end. Preschool Lesson Read the Bible READ: II Chronicles 24:1-13 13 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Teachers: Bring toy tools for the children to play with. One time, long ago, there was a little king named Joash (Joe-ash). He was only seven years old when he became king! They put a very shiny gold crown on his head. Joash lived with his aunt and uncle. They took care of him. He loved them. His uncle was a preacher who loved God. Joash s uncle told him many things about how much God loved him and cared for him. Joash loved God, too. One day when Joash grew up, he saw how things inside the temple were broken. He asked the priests to collect money and repair the temple. After some time, Joash noticed that the church STILL looked bad. He called the priests into the palace and asked them why they had not worked on the temple. One of the priests found a box and drilled a hole in the top. He put it in the temple. He asked people to drop coins into the box to help fix God s temple. Lots of people gave money to help fix up the church. When the box was full, they gave the money to King Joash. When Joash got the money, he gave it to carpenters who build and repair things of wood. They hammered, sawed, and painted until the temple looked beautiful. (make hammer noises) God was pleased that Joash and His people repaired the church. Now it was a beautiful place to come and sing songs to God. God loves us, too! He wants us to come to church and sing songs to Him. Let s sing God is so Good and thank God for loving us and giving us a special place called the church. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to save us from sin. 3. Ask God to help you to always be faithful to Him. Memory verse for younger children God loves a cheerful giver.
