He s Not Here Spring 2 1999 by Discipleship Publications nternational 17-5-3 The children will hear this week s exciting story of the resurrection and then retell it using pictures. Materials For the teacher: scissors 4 pieces of black poster board, 6" x 6" glue stick crayons or markers laminate or clear contact paper (optional) eproducible Pages: Page, 1 copy for the teacher (enlarged if possible) Preparation 1. Color and cut out the pictures from your copy of eproducible Page. 2. Mount and glue the pictures on the pieces of black poster board. 3. f available, laminate or cover the pictures with clear contact paper. 4. Practice presenting this ible Story using the pictures with great energy and enthusiasm. ntroducing the Story Open your ible to Matthew 28:1-10. Tell the children that today s ible Story comes from the New Testament book of Matthew. n your last lesson, you learned about the death of Jesus. t was a very sad time for the disciples. They missed Jesus very much and thought they would never see him again. Jesus had told them that he would rise again after his death, but the disciples did not understand what he meant. Some of the religious leaders who killed Jesus remembered that Jesus said he would rise from the dead. They did not believe that Jesus would really come back to life, but they did not want someone to come and steal Jesus body to make it look that way. So they put a big stone over the entrance to the tomb and arranged for soldiers to stand guard at the tomb. They were in for a big surprise! He s Not Here ead Matthew 28:1-10 to the children. Hold up the pictures as you tell the story. After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the ord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. Now have told you. So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. Greetings, he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me. S T O Y Do not be afraid. He is not here. He is risen!
S T O Y Story Parts Mix up the picture cards and pass them among the children. Ask them to look at their cards and decide who has the card that is first. Have that child tell the part of the story that goes with his picture. Continue until the story is retold. Do this as many times as possible. Share and Tell xplain to the children that God used his power to raise Jesus from the dead. Help the children to understand that only God has the power to raise a person from the dead. T C God s ful! The children will make a picture depicting the angel at the empty tomb reminding them of God s power in Jesus resurrection. Materials For each child: crayons 1 piece of white construction paper, 9" x 12" glue stick For the teacher: A black construction paper, 1 piece for every 2 children brown construction paper, 1 piece for every 2 children eproducible Pages: Page C, 1 copy for each child F Preparation 1. Cut out the memory verses and the sitting angels from the copies of eproducible Page C. 2. From one of the copies of eproducible Page C, cut out the tomb stencil. Trace and cut out one tomb from black construction paper for each child. 3. Prepare a stone for each child, see Figure A, as follows: A. Cut out a 6" circle from brown construction paper.. Measure 3 / 4" from the left side of the circle and make a dashed line along the left side of the stone. C. Fold back the stone along the dashed line. 4. Make a sample of the picture to show the children. nstructions 1. ntroduce today s activity: n our lesson today we are learning about the resurrection of Jesus. After Jesus died on the cross, his body was placed in a tomb. A huge stone was rolled in front of the entrance to seal it off so no one could go in or out. God showed his power by sending his angel to move away the stone. God showed even more power by raising Jesus from the dead! We are going to make a picture to remind us of all this. Show the children your sample picture. ead the scripture on the tomb and demonstrate how the angel sits on the huge stone. 2. Distribute the sitting angel pictures and the crayons. Have them fold up the tab along the dashed line of their angels. Then have them color the angels with crayons. 3. Distribute the white construction paper, tombs, memory verses and glue sticks. Have the children glue the tombs to the left side of their papers. Have them glue the memory verse to the tomb. 4. Distribute the brown paper stones. Have the children place glue on the tab of the stone. Then have them fold the stone over and glue it over the tomb so that the tab is now on the right side, as shown in Figure. The stone should now open and close over the tomb. 5. Have the children glue the tab of the angel to the inside of the stone so that the angel folds up and down and appears to sit on the stone. See Figure C. 6. Have the children fold down the angel, close the stone, and then color the rest of the scene using crayons. Make sure they put their names on their pictures. Conclusion Close with a prayer thanking God for showing us his power through the resurrection of Jesus. Show the children the Scripture Memory Verse on the back of this esson Card. ead it to them three times, pointing to the words while they listen. Ask them to say it with you three more times, each time pointing to the words for them. 3. Ask the girls to say the verse together and then the boys. Ask for volunteers to say the verse with a partner or alone. 4. Show the children the cards you prepared. xplain that on each card are some of the words from this week s Scripture Memory Verse. Show them your sample set of cards and read the words from each one. Tell the children that they will try to get all the words to the Scripture Memory Verse by trading cards. 5. Shuffle the cards and distribute them to the children. ach child should have four cards. Tell the children to hold their cards so that they can see each one. 6. egin by saying the verse, one phrase at a time. f a child has the card with those words, he should place it down. f he has more than one, he should place his extras in the middle so that the other children who do not have it can pick it up. Continue with all four cards until all the children have all four cards in front of them. 7. Ask each child to say the Scripture Memory Verse using their cards. Then have them turn the first card face down and say the verse again the first words from memory. Have them turn the second card face down and say the verse again the first two cards from memory. Continue until all the cards are face down and they can say the verse entirely from memory. 8. f time permits, collect the cards and repeat this activity. Conclusion Ask the children how they think the disciples might have felt to see a powerful angel telling them that Jesus was risen from the dead. Materials For each child: pencil For the teacher: large writing surface Special Teacher Preparation Talk to your ministry leader(s) about specific prayer needs of disciples in your ministry and make a list of four or five prayer requests to use for this activity (e.g: sickness, financial duress, loss of a loved one, new baby, adoption, etc.) Get advice about how to share these discreetly with the children, without embarrassing or singling out any children who may have the same needs. Ask the children: f God has the power to cause an earthquake, does he have enough power to solve your problem? f God has the power to send an angel strong enough to move a huge stone, is he powerful enough to help you? f God s angel is so powerful that it scares brave soldiers to death, think how much power he has to help you! Prayer Time Use the time that remains to pray for the needs of the people in your ministry that you identified. egin by modeling a prayer for the children such as: Dear God, We know that you are a very powerful God and that nothing is too hard for you. Thank you for all the awesome ways you used your power to raise Jesus from the dead. We know that you can still use your power to help people today. We ask you to please help. He/she is very sick and needs your power to make him/her better. Please use your power to help them get better and believe in you more than ever! n Jesus name, Amen. Ask for volunteers to pray for the other needs. Do not force a child to pray. f you have a confident group, divide them into pairs or small groups and give each a prayer request. Conclusion ncourage the children to continue praying for these needs. Suggest that they also try to send the person a note to let them know your class prayed for them.
