Greeting and Announcements Our Savior Lutheran Church Mankato, Minnesota Third Sunday after the Epiphany January 21, 2018 Hymn of Invocation: Hail, O Source of Every Blessing LSB 409 1 Hail, O Source of ev ry blessing, Father of our human race! Gentiles now, Your grace possessing, In Your courts obtain a place. Grateful now, we fall before You, In Your Church rejoice to live, See Your glory and adore You, Thankful for the grace You give. 2 Once far off but now invited, We approach Your sacred throne, In Your covenant united, Reconciled, redeemed, made one. Now revealed to eastern sages, See the Star of Mercy shine, Myst ry hid in former ages, Myst ry great of love divine. 3 Hail, O all-inviting Savior! Gentiles now their off rings bring, In Your temples seek Your favor, Jesus Christ, our Lord and King. May we, body, soul, and spirit, Live devoted to Your praise, Glorious realms of bliss inherit, Grateful anthems ever raise. Public domain Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Exhortation P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Confession of Sins P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Forgiveness of our Sin (Absolution) P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Greeting and Prayer of the Day (Salutation and Collect) P Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities and stretch forth the hand of Your majesty to heal and defend us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 2

Old Testament Reading: Jonah 3:1 5, 10 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day s journey. And he called out, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Reading from a New Testament Letter (Epistle): 1 Corinthians 7:29 31 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Anthem: Where You There on That Christmas Night Adult Choir Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel: Mark 1:14 20 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter. 3

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Hymn of the Day: O Christ, Our True and Only Light LSB 839 1 O Christ, our true and only light, Enlighten those who sit in night; Let those afar now hear Your voice And in Your fold with us rejoice. 2 Fill with the radiance of Your grace The souls now lost in error s maze; Enlighten those whose inmost minds Some dark delusion haunts and blinds. 3 O gently call those gone astray That they may find the saving way! Let ev ry conscience sore oppressed In You find peace and heav nly rest. 4 Shine on the darkened and the cold; Recall the wand rers to Your fold. Unite all those who walk apart; Confirm the weak and doubting heart, 5 That they with us may evermore Such grace with wond ring thanks adore And endless praise to You be giv n By all Your Church in earth and heav n. Public domain 4

Sermon Confession of Faith (Creed of Nicea) C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Preface 6

Proper Preface P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Lord's Prayer Adult Choir 7

The Lord s Peace (Pax Domini) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) Distribution Hymns: " Come, Follow Me, the Savior Spake LSB 688 1 Come, follow Me, the Savior spake, All in My way abiding; Deny yourselves, the world forsake, Obey My call and guiding. O bear the cross, whate er betide, Take My example for your guide. 2 I am the light, I light the way, A godly life displaying; I bid you walk as in the day; I keep your feet from straying. I am the way, and well I show How you must sojourn here below. 8

3 My heart abounds in lowliness, My soul with love is glowing; And gracious words My lips express, With meekness overflowing. My heart, My mind, My strength, My all, To God I yield, on Him I call. 4 I teach you how to shun and flee What harms your soul s salvation, Your heart from ev ry guile to free, From sin and its temptation. I am the refuge of the soul And lead you to your heav nly goal. 5 Then let us follow Christ, our Lord, And take the cross appointed And, firmly clinging to His Word, In suff ring be undaunted. For those who bear the battle s strain The crown of heav nly life obtain. Public domain If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee LSB 750 1 If thou but trust in God to guide thee And hope in Him through all thy ways, He ll give thee strength, whate er betide thee, And bear thee through the evil days. Who trusts in God s unchanging love Builds on the rock that naught can move. 2 What can these anxious cares avail thee, These never-ceasing moans and sighs? What can it help if thou bewail thee O er each dark moment as it flies? Our cross and trials do but press The heavier for our bitterness. 3 Be patient and await His leisure In cheerful hope, with heart content To take whate er thy Father s pleasure And His discerning love hath sent, Nor doubt our inmost wants are known To Him who chose us for His own. 9

4 God knows full well when times of gladness Shall be the needful thing for thee. When He has tried thy soul with sadness And from all guile has found thee free, He comes to thee all unaware And makes thee own His loving care. 5 Nor think amid the fiery trial That God hath cast thee off unheard, That he whose hopes meet no denial Must surely be of God preferred. Time passes and much change doth bring And sets a bound to ev rything. 6 All are alike before the Highest; Tis easy for our God, we know, To raise thee up, though low thou liest, To make the rich man poor and low. True wonders still by Him are wrought Who setteth up and brings to naught. 7 Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving, Perform thy duties faithfully, And trust His Word; though undeserving, Thou yet shalt find it true for thee. God never yet forsook in need The soul that trusted Him indeed. Public domain Thank the Lord 10

Post-Communion Prayer (Collect) A Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lord s Blessing (Benediction) P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. Closing Hymn: Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus LSB 685 1 Let us ever walk with Jesus, Follow His example pure, Through a world that would deceive us And to sin our spirits lure. Onward in His footsteps treading, Pilgrims here, our home above, Full of faith and hope and love, Let us do the Father s bidding. Faithful Lord, with me abide; I shall follow where You guide. 11

2 Let us suffer here with Jesus And with patience bear our cross. Joy will follow all our sadness; Where He is, there is no loss. Though today we sow no laughter, We shall reap celestial joy; All discomforts that annoy Shall give way to mirth hereafter. Jesus, here I share Your woe; Help me there Your joy to know. 3 Let us gladly die with Jesus. Since by death He conquered death, He will free us from destruction, Give to us immortal breath. Let us mortify all passion That would lead us into sin; And the grave that shuts us in Shall but prove the gate to heaven. Jesus, here with You I die, There to live with You on high. 4 Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the dead That to life we may awaken. Jesus, You are now our head. We are Your own living members; Where You live, there we shall be In Your presence constantly, Living there with You forever. Jesus, let me faithful be, Life eternal grant to me. 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100010342.
