In the Footsteps of Luther Join us for an exciting journey from Rome to Berlin, travelling to many of the sites that Martin Luther visited during the Reformation. We'll visit the Vatican to see the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Then on to Milan to see its beautiful Duomo and La Scala Opera House and up into Austria for a stop in Innsbruck before entering Germany - where Luther spent most of his days. As 017 is the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, what better time to visit the most famous sites related to the life and times of Martin Luther. isenach Wurzburg Milan isleben GRMANY 1 Augsburg AUSTRIA Oberammergau Innsbruck ITALY Berlin Wittenberg 3 Leipzig rfurt Rome = overnights = first overnight = last overnight Adriatic Sea TUSDAY, JULY 11 Day 1 Departure Day Today we meet our fellow travellers at the airport to board the departure flight, ready to begin a journey filled with new and exciting experiences. WDNSDAY, JULY 1 D Day Arrival in Rome This morning we are met at the airport by our guide and driver, and then taken on a short panoramic coach tour of Rome, a UNSCO World Heritage Site (WHS). Afterwards, we check in to our hotel where we will stay for the next three nights. THURSDAY, JULY 13 BD Day 3 Rome Sightseeing This morning's tour of ancient Rome includes the Forum; the Colosseum - Rome's greatest amphitheatre and site of deadly gladiator combats; and Circus Maximus - where the chariot races were held. This afternoon's sightseeing includes the Pantheon - built in the second century by Hadrian; the Spanish Steps - made from travertine marble; and the famous Trevi Fountain - don't forget to toss a coin and make a wish! There will also be some time for shopping. Tonight we will go out for a special dinner which will be accompanied by musical entertainment. FRIDAY, JULY 14 BD Day 4 Vatican City - Catacombs A morning tour of the Vatican City (WHS) includes the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel - the ceiling is one of Michelangelo's masterpieces and the highlight of the visit. In the afternoon we tour St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world and Catholicism's most sacred shrine. Admire Michelangelo s Pietà and Bernini s amazing bronze canopy. Next we see one of the ancient catacombs - an intricate network of passages and chambers hewn from the soft Roman tufa, where early Christians came to bury their dead and pay respect to martyrs. SATURDAY, JULY 15 BD Day 5 To Milan Today we travel through central Italy on our way to Milan. Stops along the way will be made to enjoy the scenery and take some pictures. Upon arrival in Milan, we check into our hotel and have some free time to explore before dinner. SUNDAY, JULY 16 BD Day 6 Milan Sightseeing During our morning tour of Milan, we view the famous La Scala Opera House and then stop at the Duomo - the world's largest Gothic cathedral. Begun in 1386, it took nearly five centuries to complete. Time permitting, we may see the Baptistry in the basement where Augustine was baptized. The Piazza Mercanti has been the heart of Milan s trade and business activity since the middle ages. On a short walk we admire the ancient buildings including the Palazzo della Ragione. After lunch, we have some free time to wander through the Historical Centre of this remarkable city and perhaps visit one of the many museums in the area. MONDAY, JULY 17 BD Day 7 Innsbruck - Oberammergau We depart Milan today and travel north through the incredible scenery of the Italian Alps. Remarkable vistas surround us and there will be opportunities for photo stops along the way. We travel through the Brenner Pass to cross the border into Austria. In the city of Innsbruck we enjoy a short tour including Maria-Theresien Strasse and the famous Golden Roof. Our journey continues to Germany and our destination, the 'Passion Play' village of Oberammergau. TUSDAY, JULY 18 BD Day 8 Linderhof Palace - Wies Church This morning we visit the fascinating Linderhof Palace, built by King Ludwig II who was affectionately known as "Mad Ludwig" due to his eccentric behaviour. ach room is exquisitely decorated and the

Then we visit the Wies Church (WHS), a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo where the outside of the church is modest in comparison to the splendour of the décor inside. The rest of the afternoon is free to walk around the village of Oberammergau - admire the abundance of local handicrafts on display in the shop windows, or enjoy a hike in the surrounding hills. WDNSDAY, JULY 19 BD Day 9 Augsburg City Touring We take our leave of the quaint village of Oberammergau today and head for Augsburg - Germany's third oldest city founded by the Romans in 15 BC. Luther stayed at the Carmelite Abbey here while defending his theses for the first time in 1518. We visit St. Anna Church which houses the Luther museum, then we stop to see the historical Rathaus (City Hall), and Golden Tower. This afternoon we have some free time to explore on our own. Next we stop in isleben (WHS) to tour Luther's birth house (also the house where he died), the new museum near the birth house, and the Church of St. Peter and Paul where he was baptised. We then carry on to Leipzig and our hotel. SUNDAY, JULY 3 BD Day 13 Leipzig City Tour During our morning tour of Leipzig, we visit the famous St. Thomas Church or Thomaskirche. Luther gave a sermon here in 1539 to introduce Reformation to the people of Leipzig. Also, Johann Sebastian Bach was the choir director between 173 and 1750.
