A word from Pastor Mike.... Cary United Methodist Church is vibrant and alive because of the commitment, dedication and hard work of many leaders. For our congregation to function as an effective witness for Jesus Christ in our world, certain organizational tasks must be done. In the United Methodist Church, persons typically serve on our administrative committees for a three year term. Shortly after Pastor Dan and I arrived in July of 2013, I asked some of our committee members to extend their service in order to provide continuity during the transition. We also encouraged some of our committee chairpersons to extend their term beyond the normal limit. Our leaders graciously agreed to these requests. At the end of 2015, we bid farewell to several leaders who are rotating out of their current positions. I am so blessed by their contribution and want to thank them for the ministries they have offered. Brian McCarthy concluded his term as chair of our Church Council. Brian brings a warm Christian faith combined by great organizational skills to serve God here. He led the council to a new approach to conducting meetings that has made our time together much more efficient. Tom Swider finished his work as chair of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee. Tom brings maturity and a disarming sense of humor with his service. He led the committee in the challenging work of transitioning to two new pastors while at the same time reconfiguring the staff. We were blessed to have Mark Peterson as chair of the Finance Committee. Mark was passionate about funding our ministry through careful stewardship of our financial resources. He will continue to provide leadership for our annual Golf Outing in the early summer. Bruce Oberlies remains a member of our Board of Trustees, while stepping aside as chair. Bruce puts in many hours to organize the maintenance and improvement of our church campus and two parsonages while also devoting his time to the hands-on work of repairing and restoring. In planning for the coming years, our Committee on Lay Leadership and Nominations in cooperation with the Church Council has instituted some changes in the ways our leadership functions. We were looking for ways to simplify our structure and allow more persons to participate in leadership. We want our members to spend more time in serving and less time in attending meetings. We are changing the names of some of our committees and moving to ministry teams. Our Worship Committee is now the Worship Team and will move from ten to four meetings per year. Our Missions Committee is now the Outreach Team and will continue to focus on ways we meet humanitarian needs locally, nationally and globally. Our Evangelism Committee is now the Witness Team. This group will encourage all of us to engage in a Christian witness in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces and world. Our Education Committee is now the Nurture Team. They will encourage all of our men and women to be involved in Sunday School, Bible Studies and Small Groups. The names of our leaders are listed in other pages in this newsletter. Nurture Team Vacation Bible School (VBS) Monday, June 20- Friday, June 24 Our Summer VBS is one of the major ways Cary UMC reaches out to the families in our community. Through VBS, children can experience the love of God in fun and experiential ways. They even get to participate in missions, helping other children in a different part of the world. Would you like to be a part of this great experience? We have plenty of opportunities for you to serve! On Good Friday, we will be learning about the relationship between Pictured below: Youth group students, Aidan and Brandon presented a skit each Passover and Christ as the Lamb of God through the Model Seder Meal. Our guest speaker will walk us through a Jewish Passover Seder, weaving the story of the Exodus together with the life, death and resurrection of Christ. We will hear, see, touch and actually taste the meal that Jesus might have eaten at the last supper! The words Jesus spoke in the upper room will come alive as each item is carefully explained. YOUTH Ignite youth seeks to provide a safe environment for youth to grow in relationship with God, each other, and their faith. Youth Appalachia Service Project (ASP) During the summer, some youth play video games, some go to band camp, choir camp, or sports camp. Our youth group, at Cary United Methodist Church, transform the world! Saturday, July 16 - Saturday, July 23, our youth will be going to Kentucky to partner with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP). For more than 45 years, ASP has been changing lives of the low-income families in the rural Central Appalachia region by providing much needed home repairs. Unfortunately, year after year, they receive more help requests than they can fulfill. Our youth will be making it possible for ASP to reach more families in the summer of 2016. We invite you to participate in mission with our youth through your prayers and financial support! Donate by giving special offering labeled as ASP Mission or donate gas cards at the gift card table on Sunday. Also keep your eyes open for other fund raisers in the next coming months! Ignite Youth Sundays, 6 7:30 pm Fellowship Hall & Youth Room What is a clique? What is the advantage and disadvantage of a clique? Where have we seen cliques? Are we a part of a clique? These and many other questions were the topic of our discussion at Ignite this month. As a youth group, we reexamined what are some of our growing edges when it comes to welcoming others into our close knit groups. Who does Jesus call us to be? We looked at the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector and how intentional Jesus was in welcoming Zacchaeus, who most people wanted to leave out. He was a tax collector, someone everyone believed made a living cheating people out of money. As a practical application, we all committed to ask, how was your week? to any other youth we see in church, espe- 6

In confirmation class, we learned that the book of Revelation can give us an answer to this question. Some people think that Revelation is a book about the horrific end creation will meet. Meteors? Earthquakes? Zombies? Who knows? As we read through parts of Revelation, we discovered that the end of the world will not be so scary after all. In fact, God says God will wipe every tear from our eyes! God is at work even now making all things new. Revelation is actually a book of hope and renewal of all creation. They are collecting for a Neighborhood bench. We have also assigned our 134# credit to them. At the Mission u Retreat at Camp Reynoldswood, in mid-january, we saw the four green benches our original collection of caps created. Amazing what the power of teamwork can provide! 12

Easter Flowers Easter Sunday is March 27. We will be decorating our sanctuary with beautiful spring flowers for Easter. To purchase flowers, order forms will be available starting Sunday, February 14 on the welcome center in the narthex. The last day we will take orders is Sunday, February 28. Orders may be placed in the offering plate during worship or turned into the church office. The Open Door Cary United Methodist Church Believes that our Open Door newsletter is a witnessing tool. With that in mind, anyone is welcome to submit an article for the Open Door. Our highest priority is the Christian content and to strive for accuracy. The newsletter can be an opportunity for us to tell stories of what God is doing, celebrate important developments as a community, teach about the Christian faith and practice spiritual formation. Guidelines have been written to help us use this resource most effectively to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The purpose of our guidelines is to provide clarity and consistency to Cary United Methodist Church s publications and digital media. These guidelines have been established for your use when writing on behalf of the church.
