FORGIVENESS But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that course you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which spitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven. For He makes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust and the just. (Matthew 5:44-45) And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against another: that your Father, Who is in Heaven, also may forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father Who is in Heaven forgive your trespasses. (Mark 11:25-26) For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. (Matthew 6:14) Therefore, if your enemy hungers, feed him: if he thirsts, give him a drink. (Romans 12:20) But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again: and your rewards shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest : for He is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. Be merciful therefore, as your father is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgive. (Luke 6:35-37) ST. sewhat is the meaning of Eternal memory! I sometimes have thoughts hit me about why we do what we do as Orthodox Christians. Often I know the answer but mostly these are thoughts that come up randomly and though I know I was taught the answer, when they pop up, I know it is time to learn more and to give them deeper consideration. Recently a friend/classmate of my mother s passed away and since I know this person s brother I wanted to send a card. But what to write, I only know to say Memory Eternal so the question is why? We can best ap- proach the meaning of this song through following the connection between the Orthodox funeral ser- vices and the crucifixion of Christ. Fr. Pavel Florensky, recently canon- ized by the Church in Russia, ar- ticulated the connection by first asking, What did the wise thief ask for on the cross? ( and then answering by quoting from St. Luke s Gospel: Lord, remember me when Thou comest in Thy kingdom (23:42). Florensky then continues: And in answer, in satisfaction of his wish, his wish to be remembered, the Lord witnesses: Verily, I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in Paradise. In other words, to be remembered by the Lord is the same thing as to be in Paradise. To be in Paradise is to be in eternal memory and, consequently, to have eternal existence and therefore an eternal memory of God. Without remembrance of God we die, but our remembrance of God is possible only through God s remembrance of us. The expression, "For God and Country," has real meaning for the Orthodox Greek on the 25th day of March, a day on which he can celebrate two events without diminishing either one for the obvious reason that devotion and patriotism have the same emotional root -- love. If Christianity could be compressed into a single word, that word would be love. The same holds true for patriotism. Uppermost in the true Greek's Mary, chosen from all the of Jesus Christ. Tsourekia Bake sale The political importance of March 25 is fully realized only when the suffering of four centuries is called to mind. In 1458 the Ottoman hordes overran all of Greece and most of the Balkans and held hostage a people whose culture dated back more than two thousand years, and who gave more to the world than it could ever receive in return, and it seems that the world just stood by while the cradle of democracy and Christianity was being defiled by a scourge that would have undone a less hardy breed. Hopelessly outnumbered, Greece endured nearly four hundred years of brutal oppression, but the spirit of its people knew not a single moment's weakness. The fires of rebellion that the Turks thought they had snuffed out, but which had smouldered in Hellenic hearts for almost 400 years, were kindled into a conflagration on 25 March 1821, not by a bemedalled general but by a man of the cloth, Bishop Germanos of Patras, Greece, who chose the day of the Annunciation knowing God would be on the side of the Greeks. The good bishop held the Cross of Jesus Christ aloft on the 25th day of March, 1821, and proclaimed freedom for all Greek Orthodox Christians. It was a motion seconded by every Greek in the country. In addition to engaging in a war for independence, the Greeks were actually waging a holy war because it was not only Greek against Turk but Christian against Muslim, and the subsequent Greek victory was a triumph of Christianity.
