Reformation Sunday October 29, 2017 *Please stand as you are able ORGAN PRELUDE and CHURCH BELL GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION and FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God s transforming power. (Silence is kept for reflection.) Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. God hears our cry and sends the spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. *GATHERING SONG My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less ELW 597 *GREETING & KYRIE Page 203 ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION LITANY We praise you, all-holy God, our maker, our lover, our keeper, our Covenant Lord, our redeemer, the Strength of Truth, for the universe beyond our knowing, for the seas and forests and fields, for the waters of Wittenburg and for flowers in this place, for creatures seen and unseen, for animals both wild and tame, for our ancestors and godparents from around the globe. and for the places we humans call home, for cities and churches and schools, for seminaries and missions and fellowship halls. We praise you for your covenant people, for Moses and Miriam and Aaron, for Jeremiah and the psalmists, and for centuries of faithful Christians, for Luther, Melanchthon, Muhlenberg, and Fedde, for Katie Luther and Cranach, Bach and Nicolai, Nommensen and Kierkegaard, Bonhoeffer and Hammarskjold, for all servants of the Reformation. We praise you, O God, for Jesus Christ,

All: who saves us from sin and from evil, embodying forgiveness, granting us grace, setting us free, And so we remember your Word, his life, his death, and his glorious resurrection, his presence in this meal around the world, and we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. We pray, O God, for your Spirit, your breath, your fire, your wisdom, your law, your grace, your freedom. continue the reformation of your churches; and renew the world with your mercy, with your healing, your justice, and your peace, with the joy of life in your household. We praise you, all-holy God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, mighty Fortress, victorious Champion, powerful Shield, today, tomorrow, and forever. Amen! The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray together the Prayer of the Day. Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. HYMN Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word ELW 517 FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:31-34 Gar. Lector: Tony Polzine LqP Lector: Karin Falness Leader: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 46, The Reformation Psalm (Tune: O Living bread from Heaven ) The Lord of hosts is with us, the God whom Jacob loved; Therefore we will not tremble, though all the earth be moved, Though mountain quake in tumult, and mighty waves appear. The Lord of hosts is with us to shelter us from fear! God breaks the spear asunder and cause war to cease. His voice sounds forth like thunder, that we may live in peace: Be still! Bow down! Acknowledge that I alone am Lord, Exalted in the heavens, by all the earth adored! God is our mighty fortress; therefore let fear be gone. His blessings flow like waters, as certain as the dawn. And so, whate er betide us, our confidence is sure: The Lord of hosts is with us, and we are safe, secure!

SECOND READING Romans 3:19-28 Leader: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S SERMON *ALLELUIA VERSE (Tune: Before You, Lord, We Bow ) The Savior s voice is heard: My true disciples be; Continue in my Word, the truth that sets you free. Alleluia! By faith alone. That Word made flesh with us to dwell is Jesus, our Emmanuel! By God the Holy Ghost conceived, from Mary human form received. With us he lived, for us he died, by Pontius Pilate crucified. Raised from the dead victorious, this is Christ Jesus, God with us! The Spirit of the Lord is sent, active in word and sacrament, To bind the Church below, above, in chords of sin-forgiving love Till raised from death, we e er shall dwell with Jesus, our Emmanuel. The Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. This is most certainly true. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
