The Loving Father Bible Story Luke 15:11-24 Teacher Challenge Stories of real people living wayward lives and then returning to God for forgiveness can be found throughout the Bible (e.g., God s people during the Exodus), but Jesus story about the prodigal son seems so much more personal. Happily, it s the very nature of God to continue to call His people back to Him, to forgive them and to set them on the right course again. It s why Jesus came to Earth and died on the cross to pay for our sins. Today we can be grateful that God s forgiveness knows no time limit. What is your story of forgiveness? Have you shared it with anyone lately? How has God s love and forgiveness changed you? and Me Once we have become believers and are living lives closer to God, it is possible to become negligent in coming to the Father and asking to be cleansed of small infractions unkind words, selfish actions, wrong thoughts, etc. Yet when we bring these sins to God, He graciously forgives us. And He wants us to demonstrate forgiveness to others. Expressing forgiveness to young children is a concrete way for them to begin to understand God s forgiveness as well as to help them extend forgiveness to others. Teacher s Planning 1. Choose which centers you will provide and the order in which children will participate in them. For tips on schedule planning, see page 9. 2. Plan who will lead each center, making sure to have one adult for approximately every six children. For staffing tips and ideas, see page 12. 2011 Gospel Light. Play to Learn Active Game Center: Follow the Father Bible. and Me 1. Briefly tell the Bible story. The Bible tells us about a son who went far from home. His father missed him very much. Let s play Follow the Father. Children line up behind you as you recite this rhyme, moving in the way you choose. Here is the father who went down the road, Hoping to see if his son had come home. I think he (marched). Children follow and imitate your action as you move across the room. Invite a volunteer to choose a different way to move (tiptoed, walked backwards, etc.). Recite the rhyme each time you move. 2. When everyone has had a turn, end the game. Shade your eyes saying, Look! Look! There on the road! Someone is coming. The son s coming home! (Cheer loudly!) Talk About Today s Bible story is about a father who was glad his son came home. The father forgave his son for all the wrong things he had done. The father was so happy, he ran down the road to meet his son. Let s follow the father in this game! The Bible says, Sometimes people do wrong things and ask to be forgiven. To forgive means to be kind to someone who has done wrong things or been unkind to you. Being kind is one way to show God s love to the people in our family. How can you be kind to your brothers and sisters when you go for a walk together? When you travel in the car? For Younger Children Some children may hesitate to join a line on their own, but will participate if an adult helper or older child takes his or her hand. For Older Children Invite children to compare how much time it takes to cross the room using the different actions. Which takes more time, crawling or running? Is it faster to walk forward or walk backward? 226 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Discovering God s Love Leader s Guide

Play to Learn Art Center: My Family Book Bible, three large index cards for each child, tape, markers; optional stickers. and Me Prepare Fold each index card in half widthwise. 1. Help each child tape three cards together to make an accordion book. 2. On each page of the book, child draws a picture of a family member. (Optional: Children add stickers to books.) Talk about ways family members show kindness. Talk About The Bible tells us, To forgive means to be kind to someone who has been unkind to you. Forgiving is one way to show love. Let s make books to remind us to show God s love to our family. What are ways to show love to your family? (Tell them I love them. Forgive them when they are unkind to me. kind things for them.) How can you show kindness to people in your family when you are at the park? At the store? In your car? Pray briefly, Thank You God, for loving us. Help us show Your love by being kind and forgiving others. For Younger Children Before class, attach tape strips to table or chairs so that children have them available for use. For Older Children Children read their books by telling a way each pictured family member shows kindness. 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Play to Learn Block Center: City Blocks Bible, blocks, toy animals, toy people. 1. Children outline a long block road from one side of activity area to the other. and Me 2. Children use toy animals and blocks to create a farm at one end of the road. Children use toy people and blocks to create a city at the other end of the road. Talk About In our Bible story, a man s son left his family and their farm. The son walked a long, long way to a faraway city. Let s build a long road! After a while, the son knew he had done wrong. He missed his father and wanted to go home again. When the son got home, his father forgave him and gave him lots of good things! What are some of the good things your parents give to you? Giving good things is one way to be kind to the people in your family. What are some other ways to be kind to the people in your family? The Bible says, To forgive means to be kind, even when someone does wrong things or is unkind to us. We show God s love when we forgive the people in our families! Pray briefly, Dear God, help us show Your love. Help us to be kind to our families and forgive them. For Younger Children Instead of building a farm and a city, children outline a long road and walk along it. For Older Children Children act out the Bible story as you describe the events. Be prepared to repeat the story several times as children come and go from the Block Center. 228 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Children take turns using magnifying glasses to observe nature items. 2. As children take turns, use the opportunity to talk about showing love and forgiving others. Talk About Our Bible story today is about a father and his sons. The father was kind to his sons. He even forgave one of his sons and gave him good things. We show God s love when we are kind to others. Let s practice being kind as we take turns with the magnifying glass(es). The Bible tells us, To forgive means to stop being angry at someone who has been unkind to you. Forgiving is one way to be kind. Tammy, you were kind when you gave Billy a turn with the magnifying glass. Sharing is a way to be kind. When might it be hard to be kind to people in your family? (When a brother or sister says mean things or does mean things.) Pray briefly, Dear God, help us to be kind to our families and forgive them. For Younger Children Children play with nature items. For Older Children Ask children to describe the color, size, smell and feel of the nature items. Print what they say on a large sheet of paper. 2011 Gospel Light. Let s listen to a story Jesus told of a man who went far from his home and family. Once there was a father with two sons. They lived on a big farm. The father loved his sons. He took good care of them. One day a son said, Father, you promised to give me money some day. I want it NOW! So the father gave his son the money. The son wanted to live far away from his family. The son packed his clothes and began walking away. The father felt sad. While the son was gone, the father waited and waited for the son to come home. When the son got to a new place, he spent his money until it was all gone. His nice clothes became dirty and torn. Soon he didn t have enough food to eat. The son went to work feeding some pigs. As he worked, the son thought, Even the men who work for my father have food to eat. The son decided, I ll go back home! So the son began walking home. He walked and walked and walked. Soon he saw his father s farm. When he was almost there, he could see someone running down the road toward him! It was his FATHER, running to meet him! Oh, Father, the son said, I spent ALL the money you gave me. I am very sorry. The father loved his son and was glad he had come back home. The father gave him new clothes and other good things. How glad the son was that his father loved him and forgave him. Jesus told this story to help us learn that God is loving and kind, just like the father in the story. We can show God s love by being kind and forgiving to each other. 230 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Discovering God s Love Leader s Guide

Talk About the Story What did the father do when his son came home? (Showed him love and gave him good things.) We show God s love when we are kind to the people in our families and forgive them. What is a way to show kindness to someone in your family? (Let a brother or sister go first playing a game. Help Mom set the table for dinner.) Sing to God Let s sing together! Option: Provide rhythm instruments for children to use while singing Kind to Everyone. Hear and Say Holding your Bible open to Colossians 3:13, say verse aloud. Has anyone ever done an unkind thing to you? Listen carefully to children s responses. To forgive means to be kind to someone who has been unkind to you. You might say I forgive you. Lead children in repeating the verse while doing the following motions: Forgive, stomp one foot on each syllable; each, clap hands; other, wiggle fingers in air. Repeat verse and motions several times. Option: Ask children to name kind things they can do for others. Volunteers pray briefly, asking God for help in doing those things. Pray to God Lead children in repeating the following prayer, phrase by phrase: Dear God,... help us to remember... to forgive people... who are unkind to us.... Help us to do kind things.... In Jesus name, amen. Praise to God Children sit in a circle on the floor. We show God s love when we are kind to our family and forgive them. Let s play a game about a pretend family. Begin game by saying a simple sentence. Here is my brother. Each child takes a turn to add on a descriptive word about the brother, after repeating descriptions already said. ( My brother is big. My brother is big and wears glasses. My brother is big and wears glasses and likes pizza. ) Begin activity again, using another family member whenever the number of descriptive words reaches five. 2011 Gospel Light.
