Ten thousand talents today are estimated to be in the hundreds of millions! So it would be a foolish King who would allow a servant to clock up debt to that amount. Even though his debt is completely cancelled, the servant is not so forgiving when it comes to his own household. One denarius would be the equivalent of he wages of a labourer for a day, so one hundred day s wages is a drop in the ocean in comparison. Those who witness these events are greatly distressed and decide to protest. You don t have to look too far today to draw parallels to this parable. Peter asks a vital question: how many times do you forgive? The answer may disturb some people but it can also liberate us if we allow it to: seventy-timesseven, i.e. an infinite number of times. This might seem idealistic and even ridiculous, but when we think more about it there is no other option. Without forgiveness we allow bitterness to engulf and torture us; zapping our energy; preventing us from being at peace with ourselves. When we only seek retribution, we enter into chaos. To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.. When we forgive evil we do not excuse it, we do not tolerate it, we do not smother it. We call it what it is, let its horror shock and stun and enrage us, and only then do we forgive it. We hope that there will be good support from the parish especially from the casual walkers who can set their own pace. The Garda Traffic Corps will be in attendance to control traffic and the Order of Malta will be present with their ambulance just in case someone trips and gets a scratch! We hope everyone has a pleasant day and refreshments will be available afterwards in the clubhouse as well as a supply of water at the start and again on the Link Road during the exercise. We appeal to everyone taking part to be careful on the road especially on the Hacketstown Rd stretch - so walking in twos is recommended for safety sake. CATHEDRAL CHORAL SCHOLARS The Cathedral "Choral Scholars Programme" has been launched. Aimed at young people aged between 15 and 18, this exciting, groundbreaking initiative is a partnership programme between the Diocese of K & L and Music Generation Carlow and is highly subsidized. It is a context specific provision programme - specialising in the singing of sacred classical church music. The group's primary performance focus will be in the context of the liturgical and musical life of the Cathedral. Weekly group choral practice, weekly specialist voice training and choral workshops led by specialists in choral sacred music, are designed into the programme - Regina Hanley (Operatic Soprano), David Forde (Organist & Choral Director, Cathedral St. Canices, Kilkenny), Greg Beardsell, Artistic Director of the Irish Youth Choir, a leading light in Music Education and Performance and an inspirational youth choir expert, Liam Lawton (Composer), Marian Gaynor (Choral Director, Carlow Cathedral). The Diocese's vision is to inspire our young people from all backgrounds to become involved, to achieve the highest possible standards in choral singing in this genre and moreover to create a flagship ensemble to represent the Cathedral and the Diocese. Auditions will be held on Sat. 13th and Sat. 20th (14.00-16.00) at the Cathedral Parish Centre, Carlow and rehearsals will begin on Mon. 22nd September, 18.30-20.15 and every Monday thereafter. I WATCH THE SUNLIGHT I watch the sunrise lighting the sky, casting it's shadows near. And on this morning bright though is be, I feel those shadows near me. I watch the sunlight shine through the clouds, warming the earth below. And at the mid-day life seems to say: 'I feel your brightness near me' I watch the moonlight guarding the night, waiting 'til morning comes. The air is silent earth is at rest only your peace is near me. I watch the sunset fading away, lighting the clouds with sleep. And as the evening closes it's eyes I feel your presence near me.
