Pstor s Pen Homily of His Holiness Pope Frncis Mss for World Youth Dy Krkow, Cmpus Misericordie, 31 July 2016 Der young people, you hve come to Krkow to meet Jesus. Tody s Gospel speks to us of just such meeting between Jesus nd mn nmed Zccheus, in Jericho (cf. Lk 19:1-10). There Jesus does not simply prech or greet people; s the Evngelist tells us, he pssed through the city (v. 1). In other words, Jesus wnts to drw ner to us personlly, to ccompny our journey to its end, so tht his life nd our life cn truly meet. An mzing encounter then tkes plce, with Zccheus, the chief publicn or tx collector. Zccheus hd to fce number of obstcles in order to meet Jesus. At lest three of these cn lso sy something to us. The first obstcle is smllness of stture. Zccheus couldn t see the Mster becuse he ws little. Even tody we cn risk not getting close to Jesus becuse we don t feel big enough, becuse we don t think ourselves worthy. This is gret tempttion; it hs to do not only with self-esteem, but with fith itself. For fith tells us tht we re children of God tht is wht we re (1 Jn 3:1). We hve been clled to be hppy for ever with God! Tht is our rel stture, our spiritul identity: we re God s beloved children, lwys. So you cn see tht not to ccept ourselves, to live glumly, to be negtive, mens not to recognize our deepest identity. It is like wlking wy when God wnts to look t me, trying to spoil his drem for me. God loves us the wy we re, nd no sin, fult or mistke of ours mkes him chnge his mind. As fr s Jesus is concerned s the Gospel shows no one is unworthy of, or fr from, his thoughts. No one is insignificnt. He loves ll of us with specil love; for him ll of us re importnt: you re importnt! God counts on you for wht you re, not for wht you possess. At times in our lives, we im lower rther thn higher. At those times, it is good to relize tht God remins fithful, even obstinte, in his love for us. The fct is, he loves us even more thn we love ourselves. He believes in us even more thn we believe in ourselves. He is lwys cheering us on ; he is our biggest fn. He is there for us, witing with ptience nd hope, even when we turn in on ourselves nd brood over our troubles nd pst injuries. But such brooding is unworthy of our spiritul stture! It is kind of virus infecting nd blocking everything; it closes doors nd prevents us from getting up nd strting over. God, on the other hnd, is hopelessly hopeful! He believes tht we cn lwys get up, nd he htes to see us glum nd gloomy. Becuse we re lwys his beloved sons nd dughters. Let us be mindful of this t the dwn of ech new dy. Zccheus fced second obstcle in meeting Jesus: the prlysis of shme. Zccheus ws public figure, mn of power. He knew tht, in trying to climb tht tree, he would hve become lughingstock to ll. Yet he mstered his shme, becuse the ttrction of Jesus ws more powerful. You know wht hppens when someone is so ttrctive tht we fll in love with them: we end up redy to do things we would never hve even thought of doing. Something similr took plce in the hert of Zccheus, when he relized tht Jesus ws so importnt tht he would do nything for him. For us too, this is the secret of joy: not to stifle helthy curiosity, but to tke risk, becuse life is not ment to be tucked wy. When it comes to Jesus, we cnnot sit round witing with rms folded; he offers us life we cn t respond by thinking bout it or texting few words! Der young friends, don t be shmed to bring everything to the Lord in confession, especilly your weknesses, your struggles nd your sins. He will surprise you with his forgiveness nd his pece. Don t be frid to sy yes to him with ll your hert, to respond generously nd to follow him! After his smll stture nd the prlysis of shme, there ws third obstcle tht Zccheus hd to fce. It ws no longer n interior one, but ws ll round him. It ws the grumbling of the crowd, who first blocked him nd then criticized him: How could Jesus hve entered his house, the house of sinner! People will try to block you, to mke you think tht God is distnt, rigid nd insensitive, good to the good nd bd to the bd. Insted, our hevenly Fther mkes his sun rise on the evil nd on the good (Mt 5:45). He demnds of us rel courge: the courge to be more powerful thn evil by loving everyone, even our enemies. People my lugh t you becuse you believe in the gentle nd unssuming power of mercy. But do not be frid. People my judge you to be dremers, becuse you believe in new humnity, one tht rejects htred between peoples, one tht refuses to see borders s brriers nd cn cherish its own trditions without being self-centered or smllminded. Don t be discourged! Don t stop t the surfce of things; distrust the worldly cult of ppernces, cosmetic ttempts to improve our looks. Insted, downlod the best link of ll, tht of hert which sees nd trnsmits goodness without growing wery. The joy tht you hve freely received from God, freely give wy (cf. Mt 10:8): so mny people re witing for it! Finlly let us listen to the words tht Jesus spoke to Zccheus, which to be seem ment for us tody: Come down, for I must sty t your house tody (v. 5). Our primry principle is Chrity. Fther Judge Council tends to keep most of its chritble works locl in the Long Islnd community. There re times, when disster strikes, when we'll send dontions out of our locl re, but in generl we support locl chrities nd fmilies nd individuls in need.
