A C T S O F W O R S H I P DURI N G RAMADAN 10 JUNE 2015 22 SHABAN 1436 INTRODUCTION In one week s time we will receive the honorable guest Ramadan so you need to feel extra happy that Allah (swt) is giving us this opportunity. It s an opportunity to be close to Allah (swt) that any other time, for this reason Ramadan is a blessed month. Today in sha a Allah we will focus on the worships in Ramadan. 1

Ramadan is the month of worship not the month of gathering, socializing, and shopping. Allah (swt) didn t make Ramadan for the duniya. You will receive the month of Ramadan when you see the crescent and if you didn t see it, then you عن طلحة بن عبيد هللا رضي هللا ( crescent: complete Shaban for 30 days and there is a dua a when seeing the عنه أن النبي صلى هللا عليه وسلم كان إذا رأى الهالل قال: "اللهم أهله علينا باألمن واإليمان والسالمة واإلسالم ربي وربك هللا هالل (Talhah bin Ubaidullah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: At the sight of the new ("رشد وخير moon (of the lunar month), the Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate: "Allahumma ahillahu 'alaina bilamni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, Rabbi wa Rabbuk-Allah, Hilalu rushdin wa khairin (O Allah, let this moon appear on us with security and Iman; with safety and Islam. (O moon!) Your Rubb and mine is Allah. May this moon be bringing guidance and good).") At Tirmidhi Book 9, Hadith 1228 ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ير ة ق ا ل ق ا ل ( them: used to welcome the month to his companions by telling (ﷺ) The Prophet ر س ول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم " أ ت اك م ر م ض ا ن ش هر م ب ار ك ف ر ض هللا ع ز و ج ل ع ل يك م ص ي ام ه ت فت ح ف ي ه أ بو ا ب الس م ا ء و ت غل ق ف ي ه أ بو ا ب (It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (الج ح يم و ت غ ل ف ي ه م ر د ة الش ي اط ي ن ل ل ف ي ه ل يل ة خ ير م ن أ ل ف ش هر م ن ح ر م خ ير ه ا ف ق د ح ر م said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived."') - Sunan an-nasa'i 2106 o Don t make the month of Ramadan a routine. 2

و ي ن اد ي م ن اد ي ا ب اغ ي الخ ي ر أ قب ل و ي ا ب اغ ي الش ر ( said Hadith: Abu Hurairah narrated that: the Messenger of Allah at- (and a caller calls: 'O seeker of the good; come near!' and 'O seeker of evil; stop!) - Jami` (أ قص ر Tirmidhi 682 o There is a caller who is inviting us to tell us that Ramadan is the month of worship. Whoever wants to do good then this is your time and whoever wants to do evil then abstain. This makes you to truly want to depend on Allah (swt). There are people whom Allah (swt) will set free from the hellfire every night, may Allah (swt) make us among them. Ameen. (العبادة) WORSHIP? WHAT IS Worship is everything that Allah (swt) loves and is pleased with it s not what someone tells me or I think is good. Your worship is in order to please Allah (swt) and in your heart you need to have love and humility ( الذل و الحب ( (اسم جامع لكل ما يحبه هللا و يرضاه ابتغاء مرضاة هللا.(تنضمن When you begin Ramadan you have a certain level of faith, but excitement will not bring your faith up, you want to have a higher level of faith at the end of Ramadan. Every day in Ramadan should be better than yesterday. And then look at the first day of Eid, did you go back to how you were before? If there is love and humility then your worship will go up and so will your faith. 3

If your faith is going down then there s something wrong. Someone might ask where can I have humility and love? When you know who is Allah (swt) and His promises and reward then it will help you to worship. Worship should truly affect you, prayer stops you from evil and bad, and if it s not then there s no love and humility. Every worship has an effect reciting Quran, giving sadaqah, but there will be no impact if there s no love and humility. The conditions for worship العبادة) (شروط are: (االخالص) o Sinerity (اتباع السنة ( Sunnah o Following the (العبادات في رمضان ( RAMADAN WORSHIPS IN (التوبة من الذنوب ( SINS REPENTANCE FROM The first worship you need to welcome Ramadan with is repentance because what s making us lazy from doing good deeds? Our sins. We want to enter Ramadan with a white page. When Allah (swt) 4

guides you to perform the worships correctly then this is a blessing from Allah (swt). When you worship then you are a worshipper of Allah (swt) and this is a great honor. It s not a title from outside, it s from inside as well. How can you have this when the heart, tongue, and limbs are full sins, subhan Allah. You can t just say we ll pause sinning in Ramadan and then go back to it, such as smoking. You cannot have the intention of pausing from sins in Ramadan and then come back to it you can t deceive Allah (swt). (توكل على هللا في العبادات ( (SWT) TAWAKUL IN ALLAH You need to trust Allah (swt) and depend on Him. Don t trust your power and say I know what to do in Ramadan. You need to say I am a poor slave and in need of you oh Allah. You need to have the concern in your heart that you want to worship Allah (swt). Ask Him to help you and He will. Don t be discouraged when someone tells you, you have a child now so it s not like before this is from the shaitan. The means and the power are from Allah (swt), and on the other hand don t say this year my life is fine so I can worship properly. So many people say I have so much energy and then they fall sick the entire Ramadan, never feel confident entering Ramadan, subhan Allah. When you have tawakul, you don t need to make a timetable, this is one of the tricks of the shaitan. You say I want to do this and you do it and you feel good about yourself this is not the way of the companions. When you make a timetable you re limiting yourself as if to say o Allah this is the worship I can offer you, istaghfar Allah. You need to hasten to Allah (swt). When you do any worship, don t look back at it, ask Allah (swt) to accept it and move on. (الصيام) FASTING 5

جو االمساك من طلوع الفجر الى غروب ( sunset Fasting is to stop from food, drink, and relations from dawn to ways: You need to have an intention before fasting, there are two.(الشمس 1. Before the start of Ramadan: you have an intention in your heart to fast the whole month, but if you get your menses or travel, then you need to renew it. 2. Before the start of the fast every day: you make an intention in your heart every day to fast Ramadan. May Allah (swt) never make us forget to make the intention. Ameen. Without the intention, then the fast is not accepted so we really need tawakul in Allah (swt). And if you want to do ihsan in your fast, you can renew your fast throughout the day, when you feel hungry and thirst, you say in your heart I am drawing closer to you Allah with my thirst and hunger, subhan Allah. Your fast will have more reward when you re focused. Sometimes we go into Ramadan likes it s a routine. The Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) is to have a late suhoor and the best suhoor is dry dates and to hasten the iftar and the best is to break it with fresh dates. When you eat the dates you remember that you re following the Sunnah of the Prophet.(ﷺ) When you make the suhoor late then it s barakah for you. الصيام يجب على المسلم المكلف العاقل ( able Fasting is obliged upon the Muslim, reaching puberty, sane, and Someone might ask if a child should fast? If they can do it, then there is a reward for them and.(القادر for you. Nullifications of the fast الصوم) :(مفسدات in the fast there is purification of the soul because you are stopping yourself from what is permissible, and this is representing the angels because they don t eat or drink, they are just devoted, subhan Allah. The temptations start to lessen and the veins become narrow. When you re fasting, the shaitan can t whisper because he flows through the veins, subhan Allah. Fasting 30 days is enough to helps you adapt any good character and stop bad behavior. What nullifies the fast? o Relation: if this is done during fasting then you need to make up that day and you need to do an expiation which is to free a slave which is so much money, or to fast two months consecutively and if you break in the middle you need to start again. Or to feed sixty needy persons. But the scholars said if the person is rich, then he needs to fast. o Discharge of semen that is intentional, not a wet dream o Vomiting purposefully 6

o Hujama :(حجامة) the one doing it and the one being done to is nullified because too much blood is being taken out. But blood for a normal blood test is fine. o Food and drink: even glucose injection. But eye drops, kohl, etc are fine. Menstruation is a decree from Allah (swt) so you shouldn t be upset but be pleased. Suppose you are menstruating and before fajr you are clean, how? There is no blood, its s dry when you wipe there s nothing, or white discharge. If there s not enough time to do ghusl and you need to take suhoor, then you can take your suhoor and then do ghusl after fajr. The intention has to be there though. If you re fasting, and before maghrib, even by one minute there s blood, the fast is broken and you need to make it up. When this happens, don t show anger, this is a decree. Allah (swt) wants other worships from you to be content and pleased. Allah (swt) will choose which worship is suitable for you now, subhan Allah. The righteous predecessors used to just sit in the masjid to avoid people and talking. Fasting is also abstaining from talking, so don t socialize so much in this month, you have other months to do that. ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ير ة (- Hadith: If anyone is bothering you with talk, say I am fasting, don t say, you re fasting. (رضى هللا عنه - ر و اي ة ق ا ل " إ ذ ا أ صب ح أ ح د ك م ي وما ص ائ ما ف ال ي رف ث و ال ي جه ل ف إ ن امر ؤ ش ات م ه أ و ق ات ل ه ف لي ق ل إ ن ي ص ائ م إ ن ي ص ائ م " (Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported: When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state of fasting, he should neither use obscene language nor do any act of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or quarrels with him, he should say:" I am fasting, I am fasting.") - Sahih Muslim 1151 Sickness in Ramadan: there are two types of sicknesses, one which can be cured like a flu, then he needs to just make up his fast for the days missed. The one who is sick without cure, meaning someone with a permanent sickness, then he needs to feed one needy person each day. (الصالة) PRAYER Before praying you need to perform wudhu because salat is based on purity. There are two ways for purity: either with wudhu or ghusl. (الوضوء) WUDHU 7

Wudhu needs to be performed after the call of nature or passing wind. How do you perform the wudhu according to the Sunnah? o Intention in your heart that you re making wudhu in order to draw closer to Allah (swt) and pray o Say Bism Allah o Wash your hands 1 or 2 or 3 times, and when you wash you want your sins to be washed away o Then rinse your mouth and sniff some water into the nose 1 or 2 or 3 times o Wash the whole of your face which is from the hair line to the chin 1 or 2 or 3 times, not the neck, remove any makeup, nail polish, permanent marker o Wash the arms until the elbow 1 or 2 or 3 times, starting with the right first o Wipe your head one time o Wipe the ears inside out o Wash the feet until the ankles and wash between your toes ق ال ر س و ل هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم " م ن ت و ض أ ف أ حس ن الو ض و ء ث م ق ا ل أ ش ه د أ ن ل إ ل ه إ لا اهللا ( dua a: o After finishing و ح د ه ل ش ر ي ك ل ه و أ ش ه د أ ان مح امد ا ع ب ده و ر سوله اللاهام اج ع ل ن ي م ن التا اواب ي ن و اج ع ل ن ي م ن ال مت ط ه ر ي ن ف ت ح ت ل ه ث م ان ي ة أ بو ا ب (Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated that :Allah's Messenger said: 'Whoever (الج ن ة ي دخ ل م ن أ يه ا ش ا ء " performs Wudu, making Wudu well, then says: (Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan-abduhu wa rasuluhu, Allahummajalni minat tawwabin, waj'alni minal mutatahhirin) 'I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, there are no partners for Him. And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves.' Then eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, that may enter by whichever of them wishes.") - Jami` at-tirmidhi 55 Virtues of worship can be found in the Mini Treats Book http://alhudasisters.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/treats-061520131.pdf (الغسل) GHUSL 8

Ghusl is performed after menstruation and relations. How do you perform ghusl? o Intention in your heart that you re making wudhu in order to draw closer to Allah (swt) o Say Bism Allah o Wash your hand three times o Wash private parts o Then make wudhu, for the feet you can delay it later o Pour water over your head three times o Wash your body, first right side then left side Express ghusl if you re short on time: o Intention in your heart that you re making wudhu in order to draw closer to Allah (swt) o Say Bism Allah o Pour water over your entire body o Rinse the mouth and nose (الصالة) PRAYER The prayer is a connection between you and Allah (swt) and the focus should be on the obligations first then voluntaries. You need to have khushu that you re facing Allah (swt), it begins with Allahu Akbar and ends with Salam alaykum wa rahamt Allah. In between you are talking to Allah (swt), Allah (swt) places His face in front of you, so you need to focus in your prayer. Place your eyes where you are prostrating, don t look up, don t turn right and left, don t be busy with anything, don t close your eyes while praying except if there is so much disturbance. Don t lean back on a wall while praying unless it s needed. Don t pray if you feel like going to the toilet or there s food 9

in front of you and you re hungry. Don t place your hands on your waist. Prayer is a noble worship between you and Allah (swt). How do you perform the prayer? See prayer booklet Coolness of the Eyes with supplications and images http://www.calameo.com/read/003585525680df9074c57 o Face the qibla and you need to wear your full garment showing only your face and hands. The garment should not be transparent or showing your figure, not even showing the outline of your shoulders. The prayer is a meeting between you and Allah (swt). Your gown should be clean, put perfume when inside the house, and your place of prayer should be clean and nice. Place a sutra in front of you that is about a palm hand s length in height so that others don t cut your prayer. This is especially needed in the masjid to make it easy for yourself and others when passing. For children it s no problem if they pass in front of you. o Make an intention in the heart that you re doing it for Allah (swt), the intention is not said out loud o You say Allahu Akbar and your palms are up showing total submission. o Then you place your right hand over your left hand over your chest o Say the opening supplication (بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم ( Raheem and Bism Allah Ar Rahman Ar (أعوذ بال ل من الشيطان الرجيم ( Istiadha o Say o Read Surah Al Fatiha, and pause after each ayah because Allah (swt) is answering you. (ﷺ) 'Ala bin 'Abdur-Rahman: from his father, from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever performs a Salat in which he does not recite Umm Al-Qur'an in it, then it is aborted, it is aborted, not complete." He Said: "I said: 'O Abu Hurairah! Sometimes I am behind an Imam.' He said: 'O Ibn Al-Farisi! Then recite it to yourself. For indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: Allah, the Most High said: "I have divided the Salat between Myself and 10

My slaves into two halves. Half of it is for Me, and half of it for My slave, and My slave shall have what he asks for. My slave stands and says: All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of All that exists." So Allah, Blessed is He and Most High says: "My slave has expressed his gratitude to Me." He says: "The Merciful, the Beneficent. So he says: "My slave has praised Me." He says: Owner of the Day of Reckoning. He says: "My slave has glorified Me. And this is for Me, and between Me and My slave is: It is You alone whom we worship and it is You alone from whom we seek aid" until the end of the Surah "This is for My slave and My slave shall have what he asks for." So he says: Guide us to the straight path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed your favor, not those with whom is Your wrath, now those who are astray."') At Tirmidhi Book 47, Hadith 3209 o Read a surah or two surahs, but the first unit has to be longer than the second. For the maghrib prayer read short surahs. o Say Allahu Akbar: and this is to remind you that Allah is greater than anything else, greater than your house, job, worries, etc. Your prayer is accepted according to how much your heart is focused, subhan Allah. o Then do ruku, and your back and knees are straight, like a right angle. Also your feet should be spaced according to your hips, not with feet close to each other. You need to magnify Allah (swt) in your ruku because you re bowing to your King. You say ( ربي العظيم (سبحان three times. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to make the time in ruku similar to the time in sujood. (سمع هللا لمن حمده ربنا و لك الحمد ( say o Then you go up and o Then you go down to sujood and place your palms straight, forehead, and nose on the floor. Your two hands are spread, and your knees are on the floor with your toes being bent. This is the closest you are to Allah (swt) and the best dua as are of the Prophet (ﷺ) because they are the most sufficient. 11

o Then sit back up and say the supplication ( أغفر لي رب أغفر لي,(رب there are other supplications which you can memorize in order to not make your prayer routine. o Then you go back down to sujood. And this is a favor from Allah (swt) to give us two sujood. o Then you go back up to the second unit using your fists as support. o You go to the second unit and repeat as the first, but this time you make the tashahud, and you can make dua a before making salam. o Then say salam alaykum wa rahmat Allah to the right side and left side o It is not the sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) to raise the hand after prayer to make dua a. Does it make sense to meet the King and make dua a after you leave Him? No, subhan Allah. You make your dua a during the prayer, which is in sujood and before saying salam. Obligatory Prayers: are more beloved to Allah (swt) than the voluntary and you will be questioned about the obligatory first on the Day of Judgment. If they re not complete then the voluntaries will be looked at. The voluntaries are to make up for the shortage in your obligatory. If the prayer is good then the rest of your deeds will be good and if your prayer is bad then the rest of your deeds will be bad. The obligatory prayers are to be prayed when the time enters for them. The ending time for isha a prayer is the mid point between maghrib and fajr. The end time is not right before fajr or midnight. 12

Voluntary Prayers: there are restricted and absolute meaning there is no time condition associated with it. Restricted voluntary are ar rawatib (الرواتب) - the ones associated with the prayer. You would also make an intention in the heart when praying the voluntary that you re doing it for Allah (swt). What are the rawatib prayers associated with each prayer? o Dhuhr prayer: has 4 units before that are prayed 2 by 2 and then 2 units after the obligatory o Asr: none o Maghrib: 2 units after o Isha a: 2 units after o Fajr: 2 units before, this is the most highly recommended to pray If you miss the rawatib, then you can make it up later, subhan Allah. When you pray the rawatib you ع ن أ م ح ب يب ة ق ال ت ق ا ل الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم " م ن ص ل ى ف ي ي وم ث نت ى ع شر ة ( Hadith: will have a house in paradise. as saying: If anyone prays (ﷺ) (Narrated Umm Habibah: The Prophet ) ر كع ة ت ط وعا ب ن ي ل ه ب ه ن ب يت ف ي الج ن ة " in a day and a night twelve rak'ahs voluntarily (supererogatory prayer), a house will be built from him in Paradise on account of these (rak'ahs).) - Sunan Abi Dawud 1250, Authenticated by Al Albani If you forget the obligatory prayer, then as soon as you remember it you need to do it. And if you sleep past it, then when you wake up you need to make it up. Other voluntary prayers: o Dhuha prayer: it s a highly recommended sunnah from after sunrise until 15 minutes before dhuhr. The best time is in the middle, around 10am. The minimum is 2 units and you can pray more in units of 2. o Witr: it s a highly recommended sunnah, it s odd. You pray units of 2 and the last prayer is 1 unit. The minimum to pray is 1 unit, and it can be prayed from after isha a until before fajr.
