YOU NEED TO KNOW BECOMING A DISCIPLE THROUGH THE DOCTRINES OF GOD KNOWING WHAT YOU BELIEVE AND WHY YOU BELIEVE IT MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SMX-862 MARCH 22, 2015 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: All About Your Salvation Part 2 Knowing what you believe and why you believe it. SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Bible, Gospel, Salvation, Revelation, Maturity Introduction to the Doctrine of So teri ology (Salvation) This topic, the doctrine of salvation Is so vital and so important that without it mankind would be lost forever! The doctrines of Jesus are simple, and tend-all to the happiness of man. - Thomas Jefferson The doctrine of salvation is what it comes to us from, the preaching of the Gospel. The Gospel is the package and inside that package of the Gospel is the doctrine of salvation. You cannot separate the two; in fact, a false gospel carries with it a false salvation. Galatians 1:6-9 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. 1.) How is salvation experienced? You Need To Know All About Your Salvation 1a.) It is gifted by grace alone 1b.) It is received by faith alone 1c.) It is provided by Christ alone 1

2.) Where do you begin? 2a.) Understanding repentance You Need To Know All About Your Salvation Where Do You Begin? Not only in theological terms is the doctrine of repentance a salvation requirement, but it is the very first word of the Gospel. Technically speaking, repentance precedes the conclusion of salvation. It is a sinner s first step toward experiencing the forgiveness of God. In your New Testament, the word is Metanoeo, meaning, to think again, to re-examine, to re-think-differently, to reconsider, to have an afterthought resulting in a moral turnaround to repent 180 degrees. Let s begin with what repentance is not. 1.) Repentance is not being sorry for what you have done. Many people today feel sorry for the life that they have lived and for the decisions they have made which have resulted and damaged lives around them. 2.) Repentance is not feeling guilty for what you have done. Just because you feel guilty in your conscience and may sense a burden of shame; that guilty feeling can be masked by external things. 3.) Repentance is not regretting that things have turned out poorly. This is what the criminal feels or the lawbreaker feels when he s gotten caught for doing some wrong. Matthew 27:3-4 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. Mark 1:15b Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. The word repentance means to change your mind. 2

It s important to note that all of us change our minds often about many things, but biblical repentance is very specific because it means to change your mind about yourself, about Jesus Christ, about seeing your need to be rescued from your own life. Repentance as it relates to the unconverted: (non-christian) There is only one form of repentance that God is looking for from a nonbeliever, a non-christ follower. That would be the repentance of thinking of how you understand who Jesus Christ is - of belief regarding the person of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Scriptures. The Confession of your sins to me, a friend, a priest, even to God Himself, is absolutely worthless and holds no value unless you first repent of your understanding of who Jesus Christ is. He must be to you who He said He was to the world. Change your mind today about Who Jesus is and be saved! We need to be careful that we never assume that remorse or regret about having done something wrong and getting caught for it is the same as repentance when true repentance is present in the heart of an individual it will result in that person desiring to flee from that sin which they have committed and the life that they have lived. True repentance causes us to run away from ourselves and run directly into the hands of God. Psalm 103:12-14 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him. 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. Dr. Charles Ryrie points out that there are many criminals who are very sorry about their criminality and the damage that they have caused, but they are not willing to come to Christ and to have their sins forgiven. This is not a biblical repentance - this is a carnal remorse, this is guilt, this is sorrow, but this kind of grief does not lead to salvation. It is imperative that you search your heart to determine if you are willing to not only face your sin, but to pick it up and run with it straight to Jesus Christ and give it to Him. That act of doing so is biblical repentance. WARNING: 21 st Century Gospel There is a gospel out there being preached which is not a gospel that saves rather it is a gospel that kills. Are you sorry for all your mistakes? then come to Jesus. 3

2 Corinthians 6:1-2 We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For He says: In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Repentance as it relates to the converted: (Christian) For the Christian, repentance means this That GOD is looking for the confession of our specific sins. As children of God, sin breaks our fellowship with him. To restore fellowship with God, we need to repent of that thing that has separated us from God. Someone has once said that Continuous revival is living in the state of personal confession. 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous Based on The Cross of Christ, God The Father must forgive us of our sins when we come to Him in repentance of them. 1 John 1:6-9 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Mark 11:25-26 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses. You might ask how often you can do this; how many get out of jail cards can I get in this life? The answer to those who are God s children Grace! There is no number. There is no limit. There is no emptying of Gods Reservoir of Grace. 2b.) Understanding water baptism Where Do You Begin? There is a great deal of confusion among some regarding the sacrament or act of water baptism. The confusion arises when we attempt to read into the Scriptures something that is not there for whatever reason. 4

Here is the crowning verse used by those who teach that you must be baptized in water to be saved. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Water baptism symbolizes the believer s trust in and total reliance upon the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as a commitment to live obediently to Him. Matthew 28:18 20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen. What are the prerequisites of water baptism? What do we need to do first before we can be baptized? Repentance of Sin and Faith in Jesus Christ to Save In the Old Testament, the descendants of Abraham were circumcised at infancy for the purpose of dedication and identification with the Jewish people, but there was no repentance required for circumcision, and nowhere did circumcision guarantee a person s salvation. Different but with some similarities, the New Testament act of water baptism is the outward display of an internal, personal, willful commitment to Jesus Christ. But there s a great difference: baptism first requires the repentance of sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and then baptism is performed. So in like manner to circumcision, baptism is an outward sign or symbol of dedication but neither act provided salvation. Deuteronomy 10:16-17 Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer. 17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome. Colossians 2:11-12 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Baptism, though very meaningful, and a great part of our witness - is simply a sign, a display, a public announcement of ones conversion to Jesus Christ and devotion as a disciple. Matthew 3:5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him 6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 5

Baptism is Worthless unless Repentance Precedes It Matthew 3:7-8 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, Listen carefully to the invitation of salvation John 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent. (not baptism) With bombshell clarity, listen to this; 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, Where Do You Begin? 2c.) Understanding personal holiness First we must define what holiness means in the Bible. The word for holiness comes from the very nature of God Himself. God is holy means that he is absolutely perfect and can be nothing less. His Holiness is incorruptible. It is one of the three characteristic revelations given to us about God s nature. God is light, God is love and God is holy! The myth of Just believe When we speak about personal holiness we need to remember this is not an option to God or us - it is a requirement within the believer s life. Because we ve been declared holy by God, the evidence of that truth can only be qualified in how we live our life on a daily basis. Personal holiness should never be confused with legalism, rule keeping, or assuming that all is well. Personal holiness is proof that we belong to the Lord. Matthew 7:20-23 Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? 23 And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! So what does personal holiness look like? 6

1 Peter 1:13-16 ESV Therefore, (1) preparing your minds for action, and (2) being sober-minded, (3) set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, (4) do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, (5) you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. Walk with Me it s a pathos, ethos, logos life It s to live a life that practices the presence of God. Knowing that God is everywhere and now living inside of you, the believer, there is nowhere you can go without Him being with you. There s nothing that you can experience apart from Him. There s nothing that you can see or hear or do without Him seeing it or hearing it or doing it with you. He goes where you go. He said that He would never leave you nor forsake you and He meant it! Practicing the Presence of God is exactly what is meant Galatians 5:16-18 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Romans 12:1-2 ESV I APPEAL to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, (1) to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, (2) holy and (3) acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. :2 (4) Do not be conformed to this world, but (5) be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
