The Lord watches over you THE WELCOME Welcome each child as they arrive. Hello. I m glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. Child unlocks the Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of eyes. Let this stamp (or sticker) of eyes remind you that God watched over Hagar and Ishmael and He watches over you. Teach the Whisper Verse in spoken language and in sign language below. We call it the Whisper Verse so you can whisper it to others.* SIGN LANGUAGE: The Lord watches over you. (For visual demonstrations, see www.signingsavvy.com.) Each time we say today s Whisper Verse, let s say it with three hand motions: (The) Lord Hand shape for the letter L moves from shoulder to hip as a royal sash. watches (over) Hand shape for the letter V moves forward from the eyes, drawing attention to something to watch. you. Index finger points straight ahead. This is a natural gesture for indicating a person. Allow children to enjoy free play until everyone has arrived. Let s sing the Clean Up Song as we put toys away before Praise Time. Praise any child who helps. Allow several minutes for clean up. Clean Up Song : Clean up! Clean up! Everybody, everywhere! Clean up! Clean up! Everybody do your share! Gather and seat children in Praise Time area. *Today s Whisper Verse: The Lord watches over you, Psalm 121:5. The Whisper Verse is a tool to help the children learn a major point in the lesson. It is coupled with sign language or hand motions as a memory aid. The verse is not necessarily chosen from today s Bible story. Page 3 of 10

The God who keeps His promises THE WORSHIP Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play It s Praise Time! as children move to that designated area. It s Praise Time our time to sing praise to the God who keeps His promises. He kept one of His promises to Abram by giving him the new land. Then, God changed Abram s name to Abraham when He promised to make him the father of many nations. God kept another promise to watch over Abraham s son Ishmael and Ishmael s mother Hagar. That reminds me of today s Whisper Verse. Let s say it together and imagine the Lord saying it to Hagar and Ishmael in the desert. Review the Whisper Verse together: The Lord watches over you. Include sign language. Let s sing that special promise as we give our offering today. Sing: I Am with You while the offering is collected. Let s see if our friends Delbert and Lello know the story of Hagar and her son Ishmael. Perform The Adventures of Delbert and Lello puppet script or read storybook: God of Wonders Unit 7, Lesson 33. The Lord kept His promise to watch over Ishmael and his mother Hagar. He saved them in the desert. He is faithful to keep all His promises. Sing: He Is Mighty to Save and The Lord Is Faithful. Father Abraham asked God to watch over Hagar and her son Ishmael. It was a blessing to be one of Abraham s children. The Bible says we are connected to Abraham and his family. Sing: Father Abraham. Page 4 of 10

The Lord watched over Hagar and Ishmael THE WORD Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; Point to eyes. My mouth quiet as can be, Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. I will listen to hear, Cup hand around ear. How God loves you and me. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Last time, we learned Abraham chose not to argue with his nephew, Lot. Today, we will see how God kept His promise to watch over Ishmael and his mother Hagar. Let s open our Bible to the first book of the Bible, Genesis. Handle the Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Genesis 21:17. WATCH THE WORD: GENESIS 21:12-20 Read the points below or retell the passage in your own words using the points below as a general guide. To illustrate the story, display a canteen or bottle of water. Other visual options include the craft sample, Color This Story picture, or any related picture. Ishmael and Hagar were sent to the desert sand. This worried and upset Ishmael s father Abraham. God promised to watch over Ishmael and his mother. Abraham made sure they set out with food and water. They wandered in the desert til the water was gone. Hagar found a shady bush for her crying son. Then she sat down and she started to cry. God sent an angel calling Hagar from the sky: "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid. God heard Ishmael crying in the shade. Lift your son up. Take him by the hand. I ll make him into a great nation in another land. God opened Hagar's eyes to see a well of water. She ran to the well and filled up her bottle. God was with Ishmael, watching him grow And Ishmael learned to shoot with a bow and arrow. When God saw Ishmael under the shade of the bush, what did He hear? (Ishmael crying.) Let s find our answer in the Bible. Read Genesis 21:17 from the teacher s Bible. Did the Lord keep His promise to watch over Hagar and Ishmael? (Yes.) Who else does the Lord promise to watch over? (Us!) The answer is in our Whisper Verse! Let s say it together, The Lord watches over you. Include sign language or hand motions. Page 5 of 10
