John Ngugi taught the course this year. The Course was revised by our Rector from an original course written by Fr. Kenneth Morford (Rector of Grace Church, Sterling, IL.) in 1948. Fr. Heschlē was present for many of the sessions. The course teaches 7 year old boys and girls the meaning of going to Holy Communion with the correct intention of heart and soul. It also shows us what to do to be reconciled to God for the things we have done wrong to God and our Neighbor. It is required by the teaching of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church (1971) that before being admitted to the Holy Communion we must be instructed, as well as being a Baptized Child of God and repentant of our sins. SACRED HEART OF JESUS: The feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is always the Friday after the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (Corpus Christi Sunday is June 18 th this year). The 8am Mass celebrated on Friday June 23 rd will be the Mass of His Most Sacred Heart. Why not join Father and pray for all priests to have a heart and love like we see manifest in Jesus himself? It may also change your heart a bit! Pray for vocations of faithful men to the priesthood. Father s Day- Sunday June 18th BBQ hosted by the Altar Guild. $10. donation requested for Adults and $5. for children. This will go toward the restoration of our antique vestments in dire need of repairs. Thank you! Nursery will still be provided. INDEPENDENCE DAY MASS- Tuesday July 4 th 9am. Mass on Sunday July 2 nd will include the National Anthem. Patronal Feast Sunday July 2 nd The Feast of SS Peter & Paul, apostles, is June 29 th each year. Parishes that take them as their patron saints may celebrate the feast with great solemnity. We will keep the feast of our beloved patron St. Paul with a Solemn Mass on July 2nd, at as the Sunday of the External Solemnity of Sts Peter & Paul. Patron Saints are a tradition held by many Anglican Parishes. Our dedication to St. Paul the Apostle goes back to the very beginning of requesting the Bishop of Chicago s permission to begin a parish in Rogers Park, IL. Later when Rogers Park became part of Chicago (1890 s) the Bishop requested we change our patronage since there was already a St. Paul s Church in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago. The Vestry requested the Bishop to allow us not to change the dedication, but to distinguish this parish by adding to our title of incorporation by-the-lake. Thus we became, Chicago, Illinois. Parish Register Holy Peter & Paul, Ora pro Nobis!

Visit our new web site at www.stpaulsbylake.org Jesse Ray Lassiter Hello St. Paul s Church by the Lake, As you may have heard during announcements, you have a seminarian working for you! I will be hanging around the church on the weekends for the next two years, working with Fr. Heschlē, Fr. Kemp, and others in order to serve you and learn from you. In order to get to know each other better here is a short bio: My name is Jesse Ray Lassiter and I m from the Diocese of Central Florida. I was born in Orlando to Baptist parents. My friends attended the Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. Luke and it only took one visit at the age of five to be enchanted by the liturgy. Having grown up serving in a few different denominations, I decided to join the Episcopal Church when I left for college in Gainesville, Florida. There I sang in the choir at St. Michael s and received a B.A. in Classics and B.S. in Economics from the University of Florida.

Upon graduation, I decided to move to Europe and teach skiing and snowboarding in the Alps. I used this time to discern God s plan for me. Originally, I was thinking about studying economics at a higher level but God had a different idea. In a rather exciting event (ask me and I ll tell you the long version!) God made it known to me that the direction I had been seeking is the Priesthood and that I now had His blessing to pursue it! After finishing up my contract for teaching, I flew home to Orlando and started the formal process of becoming a seminarian. In that time I held several jobs, including mortgage underwriting and working for Disney, until I left for Nashotah House last summer. My hobbies include extreme sports like skiing and surfing, but my favorite pastime is getting to know people and living in a community that serves God. I am eternally grateful for this opportunity to serve and to learn and hope to get to know you all. If you have any questions for me please do not hesitate to ask me during coffee hour. I will be serving at both the 8:00 and the 10:30 service and will be available to chat after each service. Thanks again and I ll see ya at Church! If you can help with the travel costs for Jesse, please speak to Fr. Heschlē. Any donation to the Discretionary Fund for this purpose will be appreciated. Inquiring minds want to know: What happened to the Birthday Cards we use to get from the Rector? Good question. For several reasons we found it necessary to stop or pause that tradition. 1. It became increasingly difficult to find someone to actually keep the cards addressed and ready to mail. 2. The cost was increasing as postage increased and there was little evidence that people even knew they were getting the card. This we attribute to so much junk mail these days. 3. And finally it got to the point that something like 40% of the cards (at first class rates) were being returned to the parish as undeliverable or unknown. For the first few years there was little evidence that anyone even realized we had curtailed this nice tradition. But recently the Rector was asked Why didn t I get a Birthday Card from you this year? So I explained we haven t done it for 2-3 years now and gave them the above reasoning. Note that you are still remembered in the Sunday Bulletin and at the Prayers for Birthdays at all the Daily Masses, with special mention on the day itself. And we still sing Happy Birthday at Coffee Hour to anyone present who has a Birthday the coming week or has signed up to host coffee hour. So the most important act is still done- You are prayed for on your Birthday. Also we should note that from the date of death we count Heavenly Birthday s, since one ceases to have years of life on earth. Then it becomes proper to count from the date of death, because Christians pray for members of the Church who have gone before us.
