Jesus Calls, Heals and Exorcizes: Sept 18 Oct. 30 Readings from the gospel of Matthew will lead us to the end of May 2017. The Fall Sundays will identify Jesus of Nazareth who heals, calms an angry sea, exorcizes demonic spirits, eats with outcasts, and through all proclaims the scandalous presence of the inbreaking of God s kingdom. Today s gospel breaks into our lives as Jesus words exorcize two men controlled by demonic spirits, sending the spirits into a herd of swine, leaving the herdsmen aghast as he tells the towns people the demoniacs are healed. Lesson 1 Peter 2:24-25 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. Lesson Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Anthem O Lord God Tschesnokoff St. Andrew s Choir O Lord God, hear Thou my prayer, help Thou me, and give ear to my prayer. Daily do I worship Thy great name and Thy power. Thou alone canst help me; O send me Thy peace and love, O protect me, my God. Let me never stray, O my Savior. Leave me not, O God of my salvation. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live and praise Thy great name while I have my being. O Lord God, hear Thou my prayer; help Thou me, and give ear to my prayer. Glory to God! Please refrain from applause following this anthem. 5
Holy Gospel Matthew 8:28-34 Glory to you, O Lord. When Jesus came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs coming out of the tombs met him. They were so fierce that no one could pass that way. Suddenly they shouted, What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time? Now a large herd of swine was feeding at some distance from them. The demons begged him, If you cast us out, send us into the herd of swine. And he said to them, Go! So they came out and entered the swine; and suddenly, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the water. The swineherds ran off, and on going into the town, they told the whole story about what had happened to the demoniacs. Then the whole town came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. Praise to you, O Christ. Anthem 10:30 I Will Arise arr. Howard Helvey New Dimension Singers Please refrain from applause following this anthem. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 6
