The economic process begins with want, continues with choice, and ends with satisfaction, all of which are functions of the mind. Abstract values are thus the beginning, the middle and the end of economics, and so it is impossible for economics to be value-free. Yet as it stands, many economists avoid any consideration of values, ethics or mental qualities, despite the fact that these will always have a bearing on economic concerns. -Phra Payutto. From the little that I do know, I understand that much is the basis of peace and harmony, which I am in very desperate need of. Upaya s Prison Project offers contemplative practices for inmates in the county jail, juvenile detention center and via letter writing. Our mission is to teach meditation and other mindfulness
practices as a means of ending the cycle of addiction, violence and incarceration for men, women and youths. Currently our volunteers are teaching adults and teens through explicit meditation and yoga as well as through creative writing, GED/ESL and the Way of Council. The Project also includes the Pen Pal Program, where inmates across the country can share their spiritual practice and life experience through letter writing. Volunteers are happily welcomed into any of the programs. Please contact Ray Olson at nanrayols@aol.com for information about the adult program; Shakti at shaktima0@gmail.com for the juvenile program; and Jim Dunn at jamesmdunn@earthlink.net for the pen pal program.
