Adult Education: Evening Series An Evening with a Good Book Tuesday, January 3, 2012 6:30-8:00 p.m. Library Instructor: Rabbi Shelton J. Donnell and Soni Sanberg There is a young man walking along Jerusalem s war torn streets, struggling in silence to understand his mother s life and death. She had once told him,...loneliness is like a hammer blow that shatters glass but hardens steel. He in turn had promised his aunt that I ll never be a writer or a poet, or a scholar either...because I haven t got any feelings. Feelings disgust me. I m going to be a farmer...or maybe some day I ll be a dog poisoner. Welcome to the world of A Tale of Love and Darkness, Amos Oz s epic family journey! Part autobiography, part history, Oz s memoir of growing up in Jerusalem during the 1940 s and 50 s among the greatest literary and political personalities of Israel s early years is rich with Dickensian descriptions. According to a review in the New York Times, A Tale of Love and Darkness also mourns the death of the socialist-zionist dream of a just society and a strange new nationalism, predicated on research universities and string quartets, on comparative literature and experimental agriculture, that turned instead into an acid reflux of checkpoints, demolitions, transit camps, penal colonies and strategic hamlets. Book Review: The Blessing of a B Minus by Wendy Mogel, Ph.D Monday, May 14, 2012 7:00-9:00 p.m. Library Sponsored by the TBS Sisterhood Co-led by April Akiva and Lori Glasky Social-clinical psychologist Mogel concentrates on the hidden blessings of raising teenagers in this engaging follow-up to The Blessing of a Skinned Knee. Intermingling wisdom and guidelines from Judaism and adolescent psychology, Mogel compares the teen years to the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. As kids wander in the desert of adolescence, she advises parents to offer counsel and guidance, demonstrate empathy without entanglement, and resist the urge to intervene or rescue. In chapters peppered with true-to-life examples and humor, Mogel examines the blessings of a B minus, staying up late, hangovers, breaking the rules, and a variety of other teen topics, urging parents not just to look on the bright side, but to help kids benefit from the learning opportunities inherent in difficult situations. These laws of purity, known as Niddah, transformed how Jewish women have traditionally interacted with their spouses, community, and God. In this class we will examine the foundations of these laws, wrestle with their assumptions, and personally solve the mystery of one of the most controversial of Jewish practices.
