Celebration of the Eucharist With the Ordination of Deacons For Catholics GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confession as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our fellow Christians We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ s prayer for us that they may all be one (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to the Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 3). Principal Celebrant and Homilist Most Reverend James V. Johnston, Jr. D.D. Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph Saturday, May 21, 2016 10:00 am The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception For those not receiving Holy Communion All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. For non-christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Washington, D.C. 2

Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Numbers 3:5-9 A nd the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Bring forward the tribe of Levi, and cause them to stand in the sight of Aaron the priest, in order to minister to him. And let them keep watch outside, and let them observe whatever pertains to the ritual for the multitude, in front of the tabernacle of the testimony, and let them take care of the vessels of the tabernacle, serving in its ministry. And you shall give the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons; for they have been delivered to them by the sons of Israel. COLLECT The Word of the Lord. ALL: THANKS BE TO GOD. SECOND READING Acts 6:1-7b A t that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Good News Acclamation James Chepponis The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith. The Word of the Lord ALL: THANKS BE TO GOD. 9 10
GOSPEL John 15: 9-17 Rite of Ordination A men, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat, but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. All are seated. THE ELECTION OF THE CANDIDATES The candidates are presented to the Bishop, who addresses several questions to them. At the conclusion, the Bishop addresses all present: Bishop: All: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Diaconate. The Servant Song Richard Gillard Liturgy of the Eucharist PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS: The Spirit of the Lord Philip Stopford The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor: He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliv rance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord; To give unto them that mourn a garland of ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before the nations.
