Introduction Jesus Parable of The Wedding "For many are called, but few are chosen." A parable is an earthly story designed to teach a spiritual lesson through a comparison Many parables focused on the nature of the kingdom of God, its King and its citizens Today, Jesus church is the visible manifestation of His kingdom 2 Introduction Many of Jesus parables were responses to individuals or groups that opposed Him His parable of the wedding feast is the third of three parables He spoke in response to the religious leaders who challenged His authority The parable of the two sons rebuked the religious leaders who claimed obedience to God but rejected John the Baptist 3 Introduction The parable of the wicked vine-growers rebuked the Jewish religious leaders and their followers for rejecting Jesus, the Son of God It also reveals that He will take the kingdom from the rebellious and give it to the humble, obedient and fruitful In the parable of the wedding feast, Jesus again speaks of the Jewish nation rejecting Him but then goes further 4 Introduction He speaks of God taking vengeance on those who murdered the Lord Jesus and many Christians Then, those who are called must put on Christ and deeds of righteousness if they are to be accepted by the Lord In the end, many will be called but few will be chosen by the Lord Jesus Parable of The Wedding 1. Background 2. The parable 3. Applications 5 6

Religious Leaders Challenge Jesus Authority To Teach In The Temple Mat 21:23 When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?" Mat 21:24 Jesus said to them, "I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 7 Religious Leaders Challenge Jesus Authority To Teach In The Temple Mat 21:25 "The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?' Mat 21:26 "But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet." 8 Religious Leaders Challenge Jesus Authority To Teach In The Temple Mat 21:27 And answering Jesus, they said, "We do not know." He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. Mat 22:1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying, Mat 22:2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. Mat 22:3 "And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come. 9 10 Mat 22:4 "Again he sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast."' Mat 22:5 "But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business, 11 Mat 22:6 and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them. Mat 22:7 "But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire. Mat 22:8 "Then he *said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 12

Mat 22:9 'Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.' Mat 22:10 "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests. Mat 22:11 "But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, Mat 22:12 and he *said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless. 13 14 Mat 22:13 "Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' Mat 22:14 "For many are called, but few are chosen." 15 Meaning of The Parable of The Wedding The king is God The king s son is Christ The wedding feast is the blessings of the kingdom given through the gospel The slaves are those preaching the gospel Those who reject the invitation are the rebellious Jews The king's armies are the Romans who destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD 16 Meaning of The Parable of The Wedding Those who received the invitation to the wedding feast are good and bad Jews and Gentiles Arrival of the king is the final judgment The one improperly dressed at the feast who was cast out is the one who either has not put on Christ by obeying the gospel or has not lived doing deeds of righteousness based on the gospel 17 God Takes Vengeance On The Jewish Nation Most of Whom Rejected Jesus Luk 19:41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, Luk 19:42 saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 18

God Takes Vengeance On The Jewish Nation Most of Whom Rejected Jesus Luk 19:43 "For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, Luk 19:44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." 19 Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 20 Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Act 28:25 And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, "The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the Act 28:26 saying, 'GO TO THIS PEOPLE AND SAY, "YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; AND YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; prophet to your fathers, 21 22 Act 28:27 FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, AND WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES; OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT SEE WITH THEIR EYES, AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM."' 23 Act 28:28 "Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen." 24

Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Mat 7:22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' Mat 7:23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' 25 26 Gal 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 2Ti 3:17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. Spirit. 27 28 Rom 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, Rom 6:13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Rom 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 29 30

Rev 19:7 "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." Rev 19:8 It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 31
