WHAT IS LAY SERVANT MINISTRY? Our church family is guided by our pastors, who are ordained by the United Methodist Church. They have knowledge, education, and experience that has been recognized by our denomination s leaders. Wesley has three full-time pastors on staff, but they can not lead us alone. In the early days of the Methodist movement, John Wesley was forced to build an army of lay people to help him. These were everyday people stepping into ministry in the world that they lived in. These people hosted small groups in their homes, visited prisoners, and fed the poor. They saw injustice and oppression in their world and fought against it. Lay people are still the driving force behind The United Methodist Church. Our pastors are only human, they can only be in one place at a time and work with the same 24 hours in a day that we all have. As Christians, we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ in our world, and that means stepping into the gap. When we see a need to be filled we are called to step in and fill it. The United Methodist Church is working to equip our Lay Servants (that s you) to be successful in ministry by hosting Lay Servant Training, October 21 & 22 here at Wesley. Please prayerfully consider attending training and stepping into ministry at Wesley. LAY MINISTRY TRAINING OCTOBER 21 (9am-4pm) & OCTOBER 22 (2pm-5pm) Cost: $35 (Includes Course book and lunch) Register Online by October 16 http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0949aaa722a1fe3-layservant BASIC COURSE Introduction to Lay Ministry Deborah Delhomme, CLM, Facilitator This course will include processes to help individuals discern and respond to God's particular call in their life. Each participant is encouraged to recognize and employ his or her spiritual gifts for the Church to become what God intended it to be. Participants will consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in discipleship. The textbook for this course offers guidelines for optimal communication in leadership and presents numerous types of ministries in which Lay Servants may assume roles. ADVANCED COURSE God s Mission...Our Journey Rev. Sharon Sabom, Facilitator (Must have taken a Basic or Advanced course within the last 3 years) This course will provide participants with a better understanding of a holistic approach to participation in God s mission to the world and equip lay servants for more effective missional engagement in their communities and beyond. This handbook encourages short-term mission volunteers to reflect on the reasons why they engage in mission and how they plan and prepare to be more intentional. It helps volunteers shape the stories of their mission experiences in a way that enhances their personal and spiritual journeys. ADVANCED COURSE Called to Preach Rev. Kevin King, Facilitator (Must have taken a Basic or Advanced course within the last 3 years) This course is designed for those who have not completed formal preaching training, for pastors seeking a basic refresher course, and for others who are called upon to preach in a pastor s absence. The textbook is a down-to -earth, practical introduction to the ins and outs of preaching for lay preachers and bivocational pastors.
