Baltimore s Premier Polish-American Roman Catholic Church Holy Rosary Church Archdiocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy Parish Served by the Society of Christ Fathers Our church is Baltimore s Premier Polish-American Roman Catholic parish and has become the center of Polish religious, cultural, and social life. Our parish is a place where Polish values are proclaimed and upheld and also a place where Poles and non-poles can express fully their fidelity to God. We are not in any sense a closed community, and we welcome all Americans and all ethnic groups in our church. A key Polish value is openness to the universal mission of the Church, and thus we try to make our church which is also the Archdiocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy a place in which our friends and neighbors of non-polish background can feel comfortable practicing their Catholic faith. September 18, 2016 Archdiocesan Shrine of The Divine Mercy Baltimore, MD In the Scripture "No servant can be the slave of two masters." Jesus doesn't give a third alternative. There are only two paths in life, the one that leads closer to Christ, or the one that leads away from him. A few chapters earlier in St Luke's Gospel, he put it like this: "He who does not gather with me scatters" (Luke 11:23). In other words, we cannot be morally neutral in life. We can't sit on the fence. Either we live selfishly (this is symbolized by what Christ calls "mammon", or worldly riches, which enable us to exercise selfish desires), or we live for Christ. If we live selfishly, we actually contribute to the culture of selfishness; we extend the kingdom of money and follow the lord of selfishness - Satan. If we live for Christ, on the other hand, we help build up his Kingdom of justice and love - the eternal Kingdom. Those who pretend to stay neutral are fooling themselves. At the same time, Jesus reminds us that we don't make this choice just once. Every day, in "small matters" and "great ones", God gives us chances to exercise our love for him, or our love for self. The Christian life consists in an ongoing series of decisions in which we reinforce or undermine our basic choice to follow Christ. Jesus is warning us that we are just like the steward in the parable. We have all squandered the gifts God has given us, because we have all sinned and been affected by sin. And sooner or later we will have to face the music - we will die and face judgment. But in the meantime, the service of golden opportunity to put our lives and talents at the service of his Kingdom, instead of at the service of self. When we focus on serving Christ, instead of trying to serve two masters, our lives take on the heroic, meaningful dimension that we long for.on serving Christ, instead of trying to serve two masters, our lives take on the heroic, meaningful dimension that we long for. We see this clearly in the lives of the saints. The example of the 16 Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne [come-pain] is especially moving. These religious sisters lived during the French Revolution. At the very start of the Revolution, its leaders sent representatives to their convent and invited them to abandon their vocation and join the New France. But the sisters chose to continue serving Christ in prayer and penance, far from the busy and exciting world of pleasure and power. The revolutionaries couldn't tolerate such a counterwitness to their secular creed. So the convent was forcibly dispersed. The nuns were forbidden to live in community or wear a habit. So they took lay clothes and lived separately. But somehow they still managed to come together for prayer, during which they offered themselves to God as a sacrifice for peace. As a result, eventually they were arrested and imprisoned. Towards the end of the Reign of Terror, the entire community was condemned to death. They were loaded onto a cart and brought to the guillotine. On the way they sang the Veni Creator, the same ancient hymn sung whenever a young woman professes her vows in the Carmelite Order. One by one each sister mounted the gallows and laid her head on the block without any executioner having to touch her. As the sixteen martyrs sealed their love for Christ with their blood, the usually frenzied crowd of onlookers was utterly silent. The only sound to be heard was the sisters' singing the Salve Regina, a hymn to Mary. Their mortal remains were thrown in a common grave with 1300 other victims of the Revolution. Two days afterwards, however, the Reign of Terror came to an end. Those courageous women faithfully served only one Master - and the fruits of their sacrifice proved that he was the right one to serve.
