Large Group Object Lesson Courage Challenge Supplies - Cooked spaghetti, jello with gummy worms, canned beans in separate big buckets, 5 stones in each bucket, 3 buckets with water, 3 blindfolds, wipes and towels Presentation I m so excited to see you guys this morning because we have an awesome test of courage we are about to witness. It will be exciting, terrifying, amazing and pretty messy! How many of you kids would be scared to stick your hand in a bucket of some slimy unknown substance while blindfolded? That s right, you can t even see what you re putting your hand into! I have here three containers filled with icky, muddy soil, slippery slime, and spaghetti that feels just like worms! (Shiver dramatically.) Our contestants, who are backstage getting blindfolded, have no idea what they ll be getting into literally! But they are going to face their fears as they take on our Courage Challenge! How about some applause for our brave contestants? Here we go, guys. Your challenge is to find five stones buried in the scary, unknown muck in the bucket. Drop your stones in your pail of water as you find them. Okay, begin! (Challenge continues until winner gets five stones.) Awesome! We have a winner! Man, that was really courageous, sticking your hand in the muck like that. These guys weren t afraid, not even a little bit. Now THAT S courage. Point - Share how this game was funny BUT there are times in life where we may have to face REAL fears, just like David did in our story. He knew that God would give Him the courage to face this giant and defeat him. God helps us face giants in our lives and defeat them too in this gross game the contestants pulled out rocks just like david used against goliath at the end of your small group time today you are all going to get a rock to take home as a reminder of what God did through David he can give you the courage to face even your biggest fears. Chose to trust Him guys and He will help you fight any battle you ever face in life.
SMALL GROUP TIME: Rock On SUPPLIES: Rocks with words COURAGE on them PRESENTATION: Give each kid a rock. Tell kids you want them to think of one hard or scary thing they are facing that they need God s help to do. Then tell them that you ll lead the group in prayer and encourage them that God know s what they are thinking about, hold the rock while you pray and believe that the same God who gave David courage to face Goliath can give them courage today. After the prayer, tell kids to take the rocks home as a reminder to pray each day that God would help them to remember that He is with them, even when they are Follow this guideline below if you are unsure of what to say or pray: LEADER: God made these rocks, and God made you. These rocks can remind you that God is with you. God is your Rock; He is unchanging and steady. Knowing He is with you can give you courage to do hard or scary things. [Apply] What hard or scary thing do you need God s help to do? You can tell Him about it when I pause as I lead us in prayer right now. SUGGESTED DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: If you want to talk about what they learned in large group time here are some suggested questions: Why is it so hard to remember that God is with us when we are in a scary situation? Have you ever faced a situation that you thought you couldn t handle? What happened? How can we remind ourselves that God is with us even when we are afraid? What are some situations you are afraid of now? Or think might happen one day? WHEN FINISHED IF THERE IS TIME remind the kids how if they say the verse at the end of the month they will get a COURAGE prize. Then have kids find a partner and take some time to play Rock, Paper, Scissors with each other they can switch partners if they want. Play for as long as time allows
