GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. INTROIT A Pentecost Prayer Carson P. Cooman O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things, and evermore to rejoice, in the comforter, through Jesus Christ our Lord: Amen. * CALL TO WORSHIP One: God will pour out the Spirit upon all flesh, Many: And our daughters and sons shall prophesy. One: Our old ones shall dream dreams, Many: And our young ones shall see visions; All: And all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered. * HYMN From Every Race, from Every Clime see insert OPENING PRAYER Spirit, we call! And many are the names by which we call you. You are Creator: father and mother. You are Provider: bread and wine. You are Counselor: guide and beacon. You are Helper: talent and will. You are Reconciler: bridge and the first step. You are Presence: host and guest. Our names for you gush forth as waters from desert springs; they teem as creatures in the seas. O God, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy names, come to us, on earth as in heaven. Amen. SONG OF PRAISE Praise God from whom all blessings flow, OLD HUNDREDTH whose Spirit came so we might know, God s work on earth is surely done when we are gathered all as one. THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 11:1-9 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so

that they will not understand one another's speech." So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. LITANY One: Once on earth a common tongue was spoken by us all. Many: And heaven s rainbow embraced us with a vision of God s care. One: But it came to pass that our necks grew stiff and our hearts grew hard. With lofty dreams we began to build a tower to scrape the sky. We hoped to touch the clouds that swirled around the feet of God. One: Brick by brick, and stone by stone, our eyes swelled fat with pride. We did not see the creeping shadow the tower cast upon us. Many: But God watched that shadow deepen as our neighbors went unseen. One: Brother clashed with sister, and parent fought with child. Friend turned back to threaten friend, and ally turned to enemy. Every gushing tongue was babble, every bursting heart was hate. Our tower toppled down upon us; we fled like sand blown by the winds. One: But now our fight with peace is lost. Crouched in every corner of a frightened, frightening world, we hear a mighty wind. Fire dances above us and blazes in our bones. * Que la paz prevalezca en la tierra. (Spanish: May peace prevail on earth.) One: On this day we surrender tongues once give to babbling speech. The Spirit is upon us; Babel lies behind. With one voice we proclaim the captives release; with strong hands we burst their chains. One: The sword of peace shall smite our hearts and soothe our souls. And we will offer our warring world the word of God: * 可能和平在地球上占上风 (Kěnéng hépíng zài dìqiú shàng zhàn shàngfēng.) (Chinese: May peace prevail on earth.) Many: We shall dream dreams and see visions. And the will of God shall descend upon Arab and Japanese, upon Russian and American.* All of us will prepare for the day when the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard with the kid, and a little child shall dance before us on the road. * Que a paz prevaleça na Terra. (Portugese: May peace prevail on earth.) One: We will not hurt or destroy in all God s holy mountain; One: For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. All: May peace prevail on earth!

CHILDREN S MUSICAL Babel Babble by Bruce Goodman This Story s Babble This story s not about the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This story s not about the Tower of London either. What this story s all about is written on its label: this story s babble about building the Tower of Babel. Babel Babble! Throughout the earth a long, long time ago, everybody spoke the same lingo. How do you do? I m fine, thank you. This story s not about the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This story s not about some skyscraper in Dallas. What this story s all about is written on its label: this story s babble about building the Tower of Babel. We Built on the Flat I m the Queen of this fair city, can t help think it s rather a pity that we built on the flat. My castle windows have no view, the same goes for the rooftops, too, because we built on the flat. It s just not fair that God in heaven gets a view that I m not given because we built on the flat. I just want a view that s fabulous just like God s but more grandiose and NOT built on the flat. Build a tower right up to heaven, then with God we will be even. Don t build on the flat! We re Not God Yet Up another step, we re not God yet! Speak in Many Tongues You shall speak in many tongues. May your languages confound you. Swahili, Japanese. Babel Babble. Latin, Portugese. Babel Babble. German, Urdu, and Norse, Cherokee and Gaelic. Indonesian, Arabic, Swedish, Russian, Vietnamese, Babel Babble. English, Chinese, Babel Babble. The greatest punishment of all I give you, is some of you will have to learn Texan! Oh no! It Does Not Matter It does not matter where or how we came to speak in many voices, what matters now is though many, we are one. The End of Babel The Tower of Babel fell at Pentecost! The curse of Babel fell at Pentecost! Many tongues, one Spirit! Many voices, one voice! EPILOGUE Sung once by the choir, then by all. CHORISTER RECOGNITION

LITANY OF BLESSING/PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE One: Gracious God, our hearts are full of joy in the gifts that these children have brought to us, opening up a story that we still need to hear, bringing song and drama, joy and faith to our worship. We also give thanks for Priscilla, Emily, Brian, Maddie, Sonnie for their labor of love supporting this musical! Many: May Your Holy Spirit bless each child and leader with love and peace. One: Loving God, we also celebrate the ongoing gifts of love, creativity, and energy that fill Binkley s music ministry! We give thanks for the Children s, Youth, and Chancel Choirs, and for all of the musicians who join in their endeavors. We especially give thanks for the innovative ministry of Daniel Cherrix! Many: May each chorister, musician, and may Daniel himself be filled with Your Spirit of beauty! One: God of discerning wisdom, we also lift up other leaders and members who serve You at Binkley, and in particular, we pray that Your guiding insight arise boldly among those serving on the Minister Search Committee, on the Church Council, and on the Diaconate. Many: May each one be filled with Your Spirit of grace and truth! One: And beloved God, we pray for those in our congregation fighting cancer, for those dealing with chronic physical and mental health conditions, for those with bones healing, and for each one needing strength. We pray also that those mourning the loss of beloved companions and family members may feel Your tender nearness and grace. Many: May each one be anointed with Your Spirit of healing and comfort. One: And dear God of all hope, we pray for our world, for the peace and well-being of all. For if you would give us tongues to speak, then let our common language be that of kindness and love, of mutual honor and forgiveness. For we seek by Your Spirit not to build a tower, but rather to mend and heal a world. Many: May Your Holy Spirit descend upon all hearts and abide now and forever, leading us in justice, peace, and reconciliation. All: For all of your children, for all of your creation, we pray. In the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray THE LORD S PRAYER Our Mother Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Registration forms can be found in the Narthex and at the Binkley website. THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion.
