Dec 3, 2017 - Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER Hope Does Not Disappoint Once again the liturgical year takes us to the season of Advent: my favorite. I know that the whole liturgical year revolves around the Easter Triduum: and rightly so, since the fullness of the Paschal Mystery is experienced through it. But Advent is the time of expectation, of longing, and of hope. And there is always some type of longing in our hearts. In that sense, Advent is not just a four-week liturgical season, but it represents a whole lifetime Today I would like to touch on the theme of hope for the Advent season. I have been greatly indebted to the English Dominican spiritual writer Timothy Radcliffe. In his book What is the Point of Being a Christian? (2005) he mentions, among other things, that Christianity has been founded on a major crisis: the crisis at the Last Supper. The disciples had gone with the Lord to Jerusalem, hoping that he would be the powerful King/Messiah. But that night it became clear that he was not. They realized that they had lost the plot the plot of whatever story they were going to write. And so they thought of their exit plans: one betrayed him, another denied him, and the rest fled. It seems very paradoxical that the foundational story of our Christian faith was a story that had no future and no hope. Yet precisely from this crisis that hope did indeed spring up Whenever we gather to celebrate the Lord s Supper, we go over once again all this drama. This is the Sacrament of hope. At the Last Supper Jesus did not promise his disciples that things would turn out well. He gave them no concrete plans for the future. Instead he broke the bread and gave them the cup. He performed a sign that spoke of hope when no hope seemed probable. But that was not the only crisis of the Christian faith. A second crisis came within the few decades after the Resurrection/Ascension of the Lord. His followers eagerly awaited his second coming in glory. Externally they faced severe persecutions from the Romans: Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome; countless others died at the hands of their persecutors. Internally there were divisions among Christians and their communities. In the midst of all this the coming of the Lord was greatly expected. And he did not come! Thus the Gospels and the letters of the New Testament were written in this context the context of a severe crisis of the early Church. As believers in the Lord we need not fear crises. That is because there is always hope after any crisis. But what is hope? It is a virtue. The Scholastic (i.e., medieval) dictum In medio stat virtus reminds us that any virtue stands in between two extremes: excess and deficiency. Medieval theologians located the virtue of hope in between presumption and despair: two of the traditional sins against the Holy Spirit. In the context of today s globalized world a world in which the future is very uncertain we would like to locate hope in between a false optimism on the one hand, and meaninglessness, on the other hand. An author once wrote: Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well; but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out. Our society tends to cultivate a false optimism that says: every-thing will be fine. That is not hope! Things may or may not turn out fine. But ultimately the hope is that they will make sense. If we allow our life narratives to be written and directed by God, then ultimately meaninglessness will not have the last word in these stories. And that is hope! St. Paul to the Romans: And hope does not disappoint for the love of God has been poured into our hearts. Steve & Melinda, Walker Champion, Refugio Cardenas, Catherine Mendoza, Cristo Alfaro, Flora Saragosa, Jorge Martinez, Vera Leon, Rose Browning, Victor Sanchez. Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. Giuse Joseph Pham Dung, Benedicto Nguyen Huy, Đ.O. Phero Nguyen Đức Tiến, Rose M. Dorado, Maria Nguyen T Nguyet Hang, Giuse Pham Minh Quang, Rosario M. Mendez, Giuse Dat Bui, Armando Davila Lopez, Ana Maria Millan, Trinh Chuc. God, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of your people: hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Advent Morning Prayer Dec 3, 2017 - Page 4 St. Barbara s Parish News First Sunday of Advent As we enter into a new Advent season, our readings urge us to watch eagerly for our redeemer. Isaiah cries out to the Lord with feeling, "Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down"! Thanks be to God, we know the Lord has come down to us. God is, in fact, still present among us in the Eucharist and in every created thing. Yet, like Saint Paul, we know Jesus promises to come again; we await that mysterious, final revelation in fellowship with Jesus and one another. Even in the best of Christian communities, however, waiting can be dreary and difficult. Mark's Gospel gets our adrenaline flowing: "Be watchful! Be alert!" Although we have the enormous consolation of knowing Jesus already saved the world by his death and resurrection, we must ask the Spirit to rouse us to prayer and service as together we watch for Jesus. CAUGHT DOING GOOD Thankfully, our daily life means so much more than any commercial break. We are not just marking time, because God treasures our daily thoughts, works, joys, and sufferings. Nothing escapes the loving attention of the Lord. Nothing is irrelevant to God. In fact, we are God's beloved servants, "each with [our] own work," as Jesus says in the Gospel. God knows intimately our challenges and wants to accompany us in all we do. A line from today's reading from Isaiah can help us connect our daily work with God's love: "Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways!" During Advent, we can offer that prayer each morning, inviting the Lord to guide us as we live and wait. Today's Readings: Is 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7; Ps 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Mk 13:33-37 CỘNG ĐOÀN THÁNH GIUSE, GIÁO XỨ ST. LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Is 2:1-5; Sal 122 (121):1-9; Mt 8:5-11 Martes: Is 11:1-10; Sal 72 (71):1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Lc 10:21-24 Miércoles: Is 25:6-10a; Sal 23 (22):1-6; Mt 15:29-37 Jueves: Is 26:1-6; Sal 118 (117):1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Mt 7:21, 24-27 Viernes: Gn 3:9-15, 20; Sal 98 (97):1-4; Ef 1:3-6, 11-12; Lc 1:26-38 Sábado: Is 30:19-21, 23-26; Sal 147 (146):1-6; Mt 9:35 -- 10:1, 5a, 6-8 Domingo: Is 40:1-5, 9-11; Sal 85 (84):9-14; 2 Pe 3:8-14; Mc 1:1-8 LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura -- Isaías ruega por el retorno del Señor (Isaías 63:16-17, 19; 64:2-7).
