Fr. Julian s Review of the Past Year Sta ons around Town A very successful procession we held in our parish, praying the Sta ons and praying for various groups, homes, and families who work in the respec ve places we visited. Foot-washing ceremony This annual ceremony was held on Holy Thursday, with 24 children dressed up as disciples, having their feet washed, symbolic of the humble gesture Jesus did at the Last Supper. Palm Sunday A procession with donkeys was held before each Mass at the New Church for the Palm Sunday celebra on. School Spring Concert The theme was STREAM, as children sang their hearts out in a well-a ended concert, emphasizing Science, Technology, Religion, English, Art, and Mathema cs. All Saints Day 18 children dressed up as Saints and were presented to the parishioners during the 10 a.m. Mass on the Feast of All Saints, November 1st. Easter Vigil A few Bap sms, a few more Confirma ons were held at the Easter Vigil, while a few others were received into full communion of the Catholic church. Christmas Faire Another successful event, which was preceded a few weeks earlier by the Interna onal Food Fest, both events coordinated by Sherry Rice and her group of helpers. Fontanini Na vity The altar presently can speak for itself as the Fontanini Na vity is adorning our Sanctuary in the New Church. All the statue es were sponsored by various parishioners and their families.

4 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Fr. Joseph s Corner... [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an e-mail to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] 40 Rules for Living (and some good New Year s Resolutions for 2016!) 1. Give people more than they expect, and do it cheerfully. 2. Memorize your favorite poem. 3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have, or sleep all you want. 4. When you say, I love you, mean it. 5. When you say, I'm sorry, look the person in the eye. 6. Never laugh at anyone s dreams. 7. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt, but it s the only way to live life completely. 8. Don t judge people by their relatives. 9. Talk slow but think quick. 10. When someone asks you a question you don t want to answer, smile and ask, Why do you want to know? 11. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk. 12. Call your mom. 13. Say Bless you when you hear someone sneeze. 14. When you lose, don t lose the lesson. 15. Remember the three R s: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions. 16. Don t let a little dispute injure a great friendship. 17. When you realize you ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. 18. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice. 19. Marry someone you love to talk to. As you get older, conversational skills will be as important as any other. 20. Spend some time alone. 21. Open your arms to change, but don t let go of your values. 22. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. 23. Read more books, and watch less TV. 24. Live a good, honorable life. Then, when you get older and think back, you ll get to enjoy it a second time. 25. Trust in God, but lock your car. 26. A loving atmosphere in your home is so important. Do all you can to create a tranquil, harmonious home. 27. In disagreements with loved ones, deal with the current situation. Don t bring up the past. 28. Read between the lines. 29. Share your knowledge. It s a way to achieve immortality. 30. Be gentle with the earth. 31. Pray there s immeasurable power in it. 32. Never interrupt when you are being flattered. 33. Mind your own business. 34. You are better than you think of yourself. 35. Once a year, go someplace you ve never been before. 36. If you make a lot of money, put it to use helping others while you are living. That is wealth s greatest satisfaction. 37. Learn the rules; then break some. 38. Remember: The best relationship is one where your love for each other is greater than your need for each other. 39. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it. 40. Remember that your character is your destiny. Happy New Year and God Bless You All! Father Joseph

6 ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL NEWS A Note From Mrs. Mooney Christmas Season is upon us. Teachers and students alike are as busy as Santa s elves! Classes are finalizing the first term of the school year, which entails completing projects, end-of-the-term testing, stewardship/service projects, Christmas programs and crafts, and much more! Report cards were posted on December 21st. Please login to Sycamore and look under Student Documents. If you have any questions regarding your child s report card or grades, please email your child s teacher, set up a meeting with your student s teacher after the break, or be sure to schedule a conference on January 15th. Vision for Saint Francis: I want to bring the whole school closer together... especially the Middle School. With my li le brother in 6th grade, there should be more me spent together in unity. Hobbies and Free Time: I am on the Ba le of the Books team, I swim, play basketball, and I like reading, wri ng, and drawing. During the 2014/2015 school year, a team of St. Francis school administrators, teachers, parents, and parishioners participated in a formal Strategic Planning process. We came away excited for the future of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, with a vision that includes both short-term and long-term goals. The goals include the desire to: enable every child in the St. Francis of Assisi Parish to be the beneficiary of a Catholic education, synchronize with the growth of the Parish, achieve full use of the campus facilities, increase enrollment, enhance the SFACS image, enhance integration of Catholic Faith into SFACS, develop a premier educational experience, and achieve financial stability. Our strategic Planning Portfolio is a living document that we will continue to revisit and revise with the assistance of our Advisory Council. The Mission of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School is to foster a lifetime of learning with an expectation of excellence. In this Christmas Season, it is my hope that we open our hearts, help our children learn that our expectation of excellence is multifaceted, and that we can steer our excellence toward becoming Stewards in our community by giving a helping hand or meal to those in need. Enjoy your break, read books, play in the snow, and enjoy your family and friends. God bless you all!

Dispelling a Myth It is important to dispel a myth. Our parish has not yet completed the process of refinancing our debt on the New Church. Therefore, we must continue to be obligated to make monthly payments of $28,000 toward the $3.5 million-dollar loan. The St. Francis Finance Committee has worked very hard over the last 12 months to make sure our financial footing is strong and able to support our faith-building efforts. As mentioned above, our mortgage on the New Church is currently at about $3.5 million, which equals a payment of about $28,000 a month. The Parish and the Diocese have been working for the last 12 months on refinancing this debt, which will, hopefully, result in lower payments in the future. I know some in our parish community believe this has already been completed, but it has not. Therefore, we must continue to be good stewards of the money we were loaned for construction of the New Church. This means continuing to make the payments to which we are obligated. This is why your continued tithing is so important. Unfortunately, with tougher lending standards after the Great Recession, this has been a long and laborious process one we have still not completed but, we are still working on. When the process (or if the process) will be completed, we do not yet know. We will keep you up-todate on our efforts as news becomes available. ST.
