One-On-One With RIPE Rotary International President Elect Ian Riseley spoke and answered questions during the One-On-One Breakfast Friday morning.

Noteworthy Quotes Charles Starnes, left, and Steve Shallenberger, right, visited after Shallenberger s presentation on becoming your best in Rotary. (Courtesy Photo) By Charles Starnes Dist. 5730 In his presentation Friday morning in Plenary 1, Steven Shallenberger used a quote from Babe Ruth, You just can t beat the person who never gives up. In verifying this as an authentic quote from the baseball legend, I found on Quotes Investigator that it was definitely Ruth s One more point: A good player never stops until he s actually out, running as hard for first base on the almost-certain-tobe-caught fly or grounder as he would if he were sprinting the 100- yard dash. If Henry Ford hadn t kept going in the early days despite ridicule, we would never have seen the Ford car. It s been much the same with almost every great man you could name. He kept plugging when everybody said his chances of making first base were nil. You just can t beat the person who never gives up. It s from Bat It Out!, an article published in the July 1940 issue of The Rotarian! Surprise. Steve didn t know that and was thrilled that he had inadvertently used a Rotarian quote in a presentation to Rotarians. Here s the citation: 1940 July, The Rotarian, Bat It Out! by George Herman Babe Ruth, Start Page 12, Quote Page 14, Published by Rotary International. Sometimes The Conversation Gets Serious Bruce Powell and Judy Zone (yes, that is her name) confer about the Foundation session on the coming end game in the campaign to eradicate polio worldwide. Foundation Awards Among the awards presented at the Saturday luncheon were Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service To Humanity Award which was given to Isis Mejias, left, and the Top Foundation Giving Award to District 5890, accepted by Immediate Past DG Nick Giannone, right. (Photo by Hugh Summers Entertainer Meets His Match Alex Boyé, left, had an on-stage conversation about preferences in music with Eric Kennedy, spouse of PDG Rhonda Kennedy, the 2017 Zone Institute chair. Boyé, who involved the entire audience in several of his numbers and brought several on stage during the high energy show he and his group gave after dinner Thursday, asked Kennedy if he had anything more to say. The reply was Goodbye and he walked off stage! Simon Gets TFR Award Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator Larry Dimmitt, left, presented a Global Alumni Service Award to Deborah Simon during the Saturday luncheon. Leaders Talk About Future Of RI And Five Year Projection At the conclusion of the Saturday luncheon, a panel of Rotary leaders talked about the finances of Rotary International and the five-year forecast, used by the RI Board of Directors to plan for the future, not just let it happen. Left to right are RI General Secretary John Hewko, Chief Programs and Member Services Officer Jim Barnes, RI President Elect Ian Riseley and immediate Past RI Vice President Greg Podd, who was also convener of the 2016 Zone Institute.

Getting Down DG Malinda Shafman of D5390, got into the act with Alex Boyé, right, in the after dinner show Thursday. Boyé, who was an LDS missionary in England and joined the Morman Tabernacle Choir, has been entertaining audiences worldwide for over 15 years, has music in several movie soundtracks. He says I love to laugh. Welcome From Utah Governor Utah Governor Gary Herbert gave welcoming commnets to over 800 Rotarians at the All Club Luncheon Friday in the Salt Palace when Institute participants were joined by members of the 48 clubs Dist. 5420. (Photo by Rich Harris) On Stage With Alex Demetress Harrell, left, who attended the Emerging District Leaders training during the Institute, was one of several Rotarians Alex Boyé got on stage Thursday night during his very entertaining, high energy show. Coming To America Story Wows All Club Luncheion Mr. Michel, father of D540 Governor Shaun Michel, right, spoke briefly at the end of the All Club Luncheon Friday at Salt Palace. The elder Michel told the 800 plus Rotarians, Rotaractors and guests how proud he is of his son and his accomplishments. He also told about the family fleeing East Germany for America. My son was only four when we saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time. (Photo by Rich Harris)

PRIVP Greg Podd, center, really got into the swing of things with Sgt. at Arms Troy Secord, right, while Podd s wife, Pam, left, records the moment on her phone. Groovin & Movin Friday Night For a change PDG Hugh Summers, below, was in front of the camera with Beverly and PDG George Yeiter at the Friday night party. Elvis meets the flower child! (Photos by Hugh Summers except for the one above) Enjoying themselves during the Friday night party were, left to right, Phyliss Apt, Diane Knight, Paul Knight and Steve Sehnart.

Regional Rotary Public Image Coordinator Mike Forney, left, coordinated a discussion group with these four Rotaractors, left to right, Jayme Pickett of St. George, UT, David Postic of Oklahoma City, OK, Brenna Mollett of Rapid City, SD and Corwin Coldman of Box Elder, SD, as well as several of Rotarians. Rotaract Discussion Productive By RRPIC Mike Forney We had four Rotaractors and about 18 Rotarians in the Brighton Room Saturday to discuss Rotaract. It was a lively and very interesting discussion. Among the ideas developed: Rotaractors are drawn to Rotary/Rotary club when they are offered mentoring and opportunities to learn about vocations and the way things are done by the business and professional people. They are very interested in learning about the broader picture of Rotary. They love hearing Rotary moments and experiencing Rotary at work. Quite often attending meetings doesn t provide that. Many of the speakers are not of interest to us. They enjoy participating in Rotary traditions, even singing, opening prayers and the Four Way Test. But they get quickly turned off when they experience cliques in meetings that leave them on the outside with no one to talk to. They know social media but don t like to be marginalized when Rotarians assume they are there to help the club with its website or FaceBook page to the exclusion of other things. Communication with their own members is just as difficult as with the Rotary club. They prefer texting but best of all is personal communication through face-to-face or telephone. Good idea: Don t limit Rotaract Club sponsorship to one Rotary club. Regionalize the support and involvement by giving them all the clubs in the area with which to partner. Good idea: When a Rotaract member graduates or leaves a college-based club, find out where they are going and what their interests are and communicate it to a Rotary club in their new town. Good idea: Get to know a Rotaractor by inviting them to your home or family event. College students have a hole in their family lives if they are going to school. Many Rotarians may also have a hole in their family as empty nesters. The impact you have on us when we spend time with you is incredible. You inspire us when we understand what you are doing.
