Noteworthy Quotes Charles Starnes, left, and Steve Shallenberger, right, visited after Shallenberger s presentation on becoming your best in Rotary. (Courtesy Photo) By Charles Starnes Dist. 5730 In his presentation Friday morning in Plenary 1, Steven Shallenberger used a quote from Babe Ruth, You just can t beat the person who never gives up. In verifying this as an authentic quote from the baseball legend, I found on Quotes Investigator that it was definitely Ruth s One more point: A good player never stops until he s actually out, running as hard for first base on the almost-certain-tobe-caught fly or grounder as he would if he were sprinting the 100- yard dash. If Henry Ford hadn t kept going in the early days despite ridicule, we would never have seen the Ford car. It s been much the same with almost every great man you could name. He kept plugging when everybody said his chances of making first base were nil. You just can t beat the person who never gives up. It s from Bat It Out!, an article published in the July 1940 issue of The Rotarian! Surprise. Steve didn t know that and was thrilled that he had inadvertently used a Rotarian quote in a presentation to Rotarians. Here s the citation: 1940 July, The Rotarian, Bat It Out! by George Herman Babe Ruth, Start Page 12, Quote Page 14, Published by Rotary International. Regional Rotary Public Image Coordinator Mike Forney, left, coordinated a discussion group with these four Rotaractors, left to right, Jayme Pickett of St. George, UT, David Postic of Oklahoma City, OK, Brenna Mollett of Rapid City, SD and Corwin Coldman of Box Elder, SD, as well as several of Rotarians. Rotaract Discussion Productive By RRPIC Mike Forney We had four Rotaractors and about 18 Rotarians in the Brighton Room Saturday to discuss Rotaract. It was a lively and very interesting discussion. Among the ideas developed: Rotaractors are drawn to Rotary/Rotary club when they are offered mentoring and opportunities to learn about vocations and the way things are done by the business and professional people. They are very interested in learning about the broader picture of Rotary. They love hearing Rotary moments and experiencing Rotary at work. Quite often attending meetings doesn t provide that. Many of the speakers are not of interest to us. They enjoy participating in Rotary traditions, even singing, opening prayers and the Four Way Test. But they get quickly turned off when they experience cliques in meetings that leave them on the outside with no one to talk to. They know social media but don t like to be marginalized when Rotarians assume they are there to help the club with its website or FaceBook page to the exclusion of other things. Communication with their own members is just as difficult as with the Rotary club. They prefer texting but best of all is personal communication through face-to-face or telephone. Good idea: Don t limit Rotaract Club sponsorship to one Rotary club. Regionalize the support and involvement by giving them all the clubs in the area with which to partner. Good idea: When a Rotaract member graduates or leaves a college-based club, find out where they are going and what their interests are and communicate it to a Rotary club in their new town. Good idea: Get to know a Rotaractor by inviting them to your home or family event. College students have a hole in their family lives if they are going to school. Many Rotarians may also have a hole in their family as empty nesters. The impact you have on us when we spend time with you is incredible. You inspire us when we understand what you are doing.
