Pentecost 15 August 27 & 28, 2016 Pastor David A. Rockhoff Pastor Michael F. Gorte 262-818-3762 262-287-6953 Principal Bruce Babler 360-621-8738 WELCOME We gather today to receive God s gifts and to praise His holy name. We welcome all guests and members to this service of the Word. Please sign the friendship register located at the end of your pew. If you are visiting with us today, we encourage you to introduce yourself to Pastor Rockhoff or Pastor Gorte. As you prepare for the service today, please note: Hearing aids and large print bulletins are available. Please ask an usher. Restrooms are located to the left and right of the main aisle double doors. Should you need it, there is a changing table in the women s restroom. There is also a parent s room and a second changing table located downstairs. Since this time is set apart as holy to the Lord, please turn your phone off. Holy Communion is celebrated in today s liturgy. Our congregation is a member Of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a family of congregations who pledge themselves to teach and believe and live according to the Holy Scriptures. Christ s love is our calling and in His Word God gives us a great responsibility to commune only those persons who are members of our confessional fellowship. We want to express our sincere welcome to our guests and assure them that for their spiritual welfare we practice closed communion. Guests desiring to learn more about our beliefs or any teaching of the Bible are asked to speak with one of our pastors. Peace be with you! Hymns: 306, 524, 486 (2), 529, 313, 494 (4-5) Psalm: 119a (p109) Order of Service: Common Service with Communion (p. 15) Sermon Text: Luke 14:1, 7-14 Sermon Theme: The Value of Humility! I. In Position with Others! II. Before an All-Seeing God! 3
Today s Readings 1 st Lesson Proverbs 25:6,7 6 Do not exalt yourself in the king s presence, and do not claim a place among great men; 7 it is better for him to say to you, Come up here, than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman. 2 nd Lesson Hebrews 13:1-8 Keep on loving each other as brothers. 2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. 3 Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. 4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. 6 So we say with confidence, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 4
Gospel Luke 14:1,7-14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, Give this man your seat. Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, Friend, move up to a better place. Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. 12 Then Jesus said to his host, When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.
