All Souls Catholic Church 2 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time... All Souls Parish Office Staff Phone: 407.322.3795 - Fax: 407.322.1131 "Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile." In the days of Jesus, this issue was about performing empty external rituals of cleanliness instead of purifying the heart. For most of us, the issue is probably a bit different. Our fixation on externals is not so much with religious prescriptions and practices; instead, our daily obsession tends to be with appearances in general. In our media-saturated culture, we are extremely tuned in to how things look. We are trained to respond to current fashion trends in clothing, hair, makeup, and accessories. Even bodies, cars, houses, and landscaping all fall into the realm of highly marketed images. The risk for us is to be so concerned with having the right "look" on the outside that we fail to consider what's happening on the inside. Life is about more than what we have or what we parade around for others to see. As human beings we are a unity of body and soul, and if we neglect our souls, then we are neglecting the fulfillment of our human nature. We need to make sure we are not like the Pharisees in today's reading who were too concerned with outside appearances. Jesus tells us in response to them that "from within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile." This list makes a good starting point for some personal meditation on our interior life. Let's ask ourselves, "Which of the behaviors on this list threaten to defile my soul?" Then, let's ask the Holy Spirit to help purify us of that spiritual ugliness so we can appear beautiful in the sight of God. LPI, Inc. Secretary to Fr. LPI, Inc. There are lots of hands-on activities at the park, including visiting the recreated Timucuan Village of Seloy, climbing a watchtower, and admiring the craftsmanship of an authentic reproduction of a chalupa, a boat used as a tender by Spanish galleons. There are a variety of shows and demonstrations in the park throughout the day that give visitors a clear picture of what life was like for the early Spanish settlers and the native Timucuans. Sign up after Mass or contact Scott Kinser: scottkinser@gmail.com I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of you serving as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at All Souls. We are in need of individuals (presently serving in our parish as EMHC s) to serve in our Ministry to the Sick (MTS). Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick take communion to those who cannot attend Mass because of illness, injury or age issues. These ministers keep parishioners connected to our parish and bring them the comfort and strength of the Eucharist during difficult times in their lives. We minister to people in their homes, in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and retirement communities within our parish. Time commitment for this ministry varies by minister. Some choose to commit to bringing communion to a homebound parishioner weekly for many years. Ministers choose the commitments that fit their work schedule and family needs. We firmly believe that the Holy Spirit guides our Minister to the homebound parishioner who needs them the most. If you would be willing to offer your time and prayerful support to those that are unable to attend Mass, your involvement as a MTS member would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Adam Heyboer at 407.697.4402 for more information. God bless you, Father Gilbert Medina.
