Abussos, 9x = the abyss, the pit, the immeasurable depth; in Rom 10:7, the word is equivalent to Hades, the abode of the dead; of Orcus, a very deep gulf or chasm in the lowest parts of the earth used as the common receptacle of the dead & especially as the abode of demons; as a place of shutting away the devil & the evil spirits (Luke 8:31; Rev 20:3); the abode of Abaddon, as the angel of the underworld (Rev 9:11). In 1 Enoch 21:7 cf. 18:11, the abyss is the final prison of fallen angels, a horrible place with great descending columns of fire. It is a shaft into the very heart of the earth, a prison & place of confinement, in the realm of the spirit world, the underworld. Here demons are confined until the Day of Judgment. The idea is that of a long shaft or well leading to Gehenna, the mouth of which on earth is covered & locked. It is not the final Hell (Gehenna), nor Tartarus, nor Hades, nor the Grave. It is the Pit and it is bottomless as to its depth. It is distinctly the jailhouse of Satan & fallen spirits at present, & also in the 1000 years of the Kingdom Age. The Scriptures show that some demons are free to roam the earth & torment mankind, other spirits are still locked in the bottomless pit. Satan is still loose but the time will come when he is to be bound in the bottomless pit (K. Conner, p 278). Abaddon, 1x= name of the angel prince of the infernal regions, the minister of death & the author of havoc on the earth. He is Destruction in person, the king of the evil forces originating in the world of lost spirits & allowed to operate destructively in human life. Used 6x in the OT, it is the world of the dead in its utterly dismal, destructive, dreadful aspect. In Abaddon there are no declarations of God s loving-kindness (Ps 88:11). It is a synonym for insatiableness (Prov 27:20). Apollyon, 1x = destroyer, the angel of the bottomless pit, the evil angel who rules over the demons.
