Generation 7 (con't) iv. Joseph Lutz was born in 1856 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1880 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Sex: Male. v. Julian J. Lutz was born in 1858 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a Established Lutz Brothers with Jacob Lutz, at 68-74 Main Street, North Side Allegheny. They were later joined by Joseph H. Schramm. in 1883. He died in 1894 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Sex: Male. Notes for Julian J. Lutz: "Lutz Brothers - Manufacturers of Fancy Pickled Goods, Home Made Ketchups and Table Delicacies. 68-74 Main Street, Allegheny. This business was established in 1883 by Messrs. J. J. Lutz and Jacob Lutz, who conducted it until 1886 when they were joined by Mr. Joseph Schramm. They occupy a four-story and basement building, 60x70 feet in dimensions, at the corner of Main and Cherry streets in Allegheny, and also have a branch establishment at Sharpsburg, with a two-story building, 40x40 feet and a very large cellar, which was formerly used as a beer vault. They give steady employment to a force ranging from forty-five to sixty people, and are engaged upon a large scale in the manufacture of all varieties of fancy pickled goods, home made ketchups and table delicacies, and have built up a superior reputation for the excellence of their goods which are prepared from the best materials and put up upon the most approved processes. In addition to the extensive trade in articles of their own manufacture, the firm are also dealers in preserves and jellies of all kinds and of the best quality, carefully selecting their stock so as to maintain the reputation earned by the firm for uniform excellence in all the goods made or handled by it. The bulk goods made by the firm are put in oak iron bound packages and it is prepared to fill orders from the trade in a prompt and satisfactory manner. Employment is given to a staff of traveling salesmen, who visit the trade in the interests of the house, and the business includes all the territory within a radius of 200 miles from Pittsburgh in every direction. The members of the firm are all thoroughly practical and experienced men in this department of industry, and Mr. J.J. Lutz, prior to establishing this business in 1883 was engaged with the firm of F. and H, Heinz for a period of 12 years. The great success which has been earned by the firm has been a strict adherence to the highest standard of quality in their goods, and as a consequence the demand for them by consumers has grown, and their trade enjoys na increasing prosperity from year to year." (Source - "Pittsburgh and Allegheny illustrated review" by John William Leonard (1849-1922) Originally published Pittsburgh, Pa., J. M. Elstner 1889.) Julian J. Lutz would have been 14 years of age when he started to work at F. and H. Heinz. Frederick Heinz was a cousin of Henry John Heinz. The company was established in 1869 in Sharpsburg in one small room of an unpretentious building. The overextended young company went bankrupt in 1875 during the banking panic. Henry started the business over in 1876 along with his brother John and cousin Frederick. It was reorganized in 1888 as the H.J. Heinz Company. Henry J. Heinz was born October 11, 1844 in the Birmingham (South Side) section of Pittsburgh and the family moved to Sharpsburg about 1849. Julian was 25 years of age when he started Lutz Brothers, in 1883, with his brother Jacob who was 20 years of age at that time. Julian died in 1894 and was with the company only 11 years. Joseph H. Schramm joined the company three years after it was formed and the name was changed to Lutz and Schramm. I suspect that Schramm provided much needed capital for the young growing company. There is little in the way of census information on Anton Lutz and his family other than for 13

Generation 7 (con't) There is little in the way of census information on Anton Lutz and his family other than for the year 1860. I have been unable to document conclusively that Jacob Lutz, born July 1863, is the son of Anton and brother of Julian, but based on the information available there is a high degree of probability that he is, and I have elected to treat it so. (Notes to File - JP Rhein) 14

Generation 7 (con't) 27. vi. Jacob J. Lutz was born in Jul 1863 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. 21. Quirin Lutz-7 (Jacques-6, Arbogast-5, Jean Georges-4, Valentine-3, Michel-2, Valentine-1) was born on 04 Jun 1831 in Commune de Herrlisheim, Bas-Rhin, France. Arrival: 1851 in America[17]. He died on 28 Oct 1888 in Sharpsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Sex: Male. Notes for Quirin Lutz: The Alsace Emigration Book, Volume II, compiled by Cornelia Schrader-Muggenthaler, published by Closson Press, Apollo, Pa., July 1991, lists immigration information for the following. Quirin Lutz, carpenter, born 1831, Herrlisheim, immigrated to the United States on January 1, 1851. (Source Reference 5) Jacques Lutz, no occupation or date of births listed, Herrlisheim, immigrated to the United States on January 1, 1851. (Source Reference 5) Catherine Lutz, no occupation or date of birth listed, Herrlisheim, immigrated to the United States on January 1, 1861. (Source Reference 5) 15

Generation 7 (con't) Source Reference 5 states "We sorted out the military conscription lists of the Canton Strasbourg, from the years 1840 to 1871. The year of emigration is only the year, when the emigrants already have left Alsace. At this time the people were already in America. It can be that the migrated many years before that date. Some of the young men migrated as children with their parents, but most of them shortly before they were called for military to avoid the service." I believe that Quirin Lutz and Catherine Lutz are brother and sister, Further, that the date of immigration for Catherine of January 1, 1861 is in error and should be 1851. The question remains, who is Jacques Lutz. There are several possibilities. (1) He is a younger brother of Quirin and Catherine and was born after the 1836 Census, and that all three were traveling together. While this is a possilility, it does't seem likely. Catherine would have been under 22 years of age, Quirin under 20 and Jacques under 15. Were they traveling alone or with others from Herrlisheim or Alsace? A more likely scenario is either (2) or (3) following. (2) He is Jacques Lutz, born 1800, brother of Andre Lutz married to Marie Catherine Matzer, residing at 256 Grade route, Herrlisheim in 1836. (3) He is Jacques Lutz, born 1816, a tailor, residing with his parents Arbogast Lutz, age 52, cobbler, and Elise Schmitt, and siblings at 280 Grande route, Herrlisheim in 1836. In the 1880 Census for Pennsylvania, Aleppo Township, Allegheny County, enumerated on June 14, 1880, there is a Jacob Lutz, born 1814 in Alsace as were his parents. He is married to Walburger nee unknown, born 1808 in Berne as were her parents. (Notes to File - JP Rhein).
