Lutz would have been 14 years of age when he started to work at F. and H. Heinz. Frederick Heinz was a cousin of Henry John Heinz. The company was established in 1869 in Sharpsburg in one small room of an unpretentious building. The overextended young company went bankrupt in 1875 during the banking panic. Henry started the business over in 1876 along with his brother John and cousin Frederick. It was reorganized in 1888 as the H.J. Heinz Company. Henry J. Heinz was born October 11, 1844 in the Birmingham (South Side) section of Pittsburgh and the family moved to Sharpsburg about 1849. Julian was 25 years of age when he started Lutz Brothers, in 1883, with his brother Jacob who was 20 years of age at that time. Julian died in 1894 and was with the company only 11 years. Joseph H. The year of emigration is only the year, when the emigrants already have left Alsace. At this time the people were already in America. It can be that the migrated many years before that date. Some of the young men migrated as children with their parents, but most of them shortly before they were called for military to avoid the service." I believe that Quirin Lutz and Catherine Lutz are brother and sister, Further, that the date of immigration for Catherine of January 1, 1861 is in error and should be 1851. The question remains, who is Jacques Lutz. There are several possibilities. (1) He is a younger brother of Quirin and Catherine and was born after the 1836 Census, and that all three were traveling together. While this is a possilility, it does't seem likely. Catherine would have been under 22 years of age, Quirin under 20 and Jacques under 15. Were they traveling alone or with others from Herrlisheim or Alsace? A more likely scenario is either (2) or (3) following. (2) He is Jacques Lutz, born 1800, brother of Andre Lutz married to Marie Catherine Matzer, residing at 256 Grade route, Herrlisheim in 1836. (3) He is Jacques Lutz, born 1816, a tailor, residing with his parents Arbogast Lutz, age 52, cobbler, and Elise Schmitt, and siblings at 280 Grande route, Herrlisheim in 1836.
