Saint John Bosco Church a Parish of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Erected A.D. 1983 Administered by the Salesians of St. John Bosco The Feast of St. John Bosco, Confessor The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy 31 January 2016
Fr. Larry s Corner of the Bulletin Happy feast of Don Bosco!! This is a great day as we celebrate the feast of our parish s patron saint. I was reading on EWTN s web site their description of Don Bosco: He was...a dedicated priest who took on blood-thirsty revolutionaries, the Italian government and his own archbishop in his quest to rescue the homeless children of Turin. This is a good description of Don Bosco. He was not only a good, holy man, but he did whatever needed to be done to help out kids in need. On a trip to Turin a few years ago I put my finger in a bullet hole in the door of the chapel which was from an attempt to kill him. He lived in a violently anti-clerical society and had many enemies in high places. But nothing could stop him from housing homeless street kids, educating them, finding work for them, and just plain loving them. He founded the Salesian priests and brothers as well as the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters) to help him and to carry on his work with kids. Today the Salesian Family numbers about 40,000 members working in over 100 countries. The Salesians serve our parish (that s what the SDB after my name means - Salesians of Don Bosco), as well as St. Rosalie Parish, Archbishop Shaw High School, Academy of Our Lady High School and Our Lady of Prompt Succor Elementary School. All of us West Bank Salesians follow Don Bosco s educational philosophy contained in three words: reason, religion, and kindness. Don Bosco died in 1888, but his work continues both in the Salesians and in the wider Salesian family of Salesian Cooperators, former students, and all those who are associated with the Salesians - and that s you!! So we who bear St. John Bosco s name have special reason to celebrate today. Happy feast day! God bless! Please Note: This year s celebration will not be a Mass, but a Prayer Service. Attendance at Mass for the Sunday obligation will have to be met within one s respective parish. (To register, please contact the parish rectory before February 19, 2016) St. John Bosco St. John Bosco was moved by the plight of young abandoned boys in Rome using reason, religion and kindness he taught the boys how to unite their faith with work and play. By opening the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales, he provided workshops for boys in shoemaking and tailoring. He got them off the streets, educated them, and helped them find job. In 1859, he founded the Salesians who were committed to education and mission work. Friend of the Young and the Poor You were the light in the dark for the young who could not see. And you were a spark for the young to become all they could be. Help us all come to be all God calls us to be. We will send the message. We will be the witnesses that you, Don Bosco, are the friend of the young and the poor. Lead us safely through the storm to the heavenly shore. You felt the fire in the heart of the Lord who burns with love. And you touched the heart of the young with that fire from above. Touch our hearts with that fire, make our God our desire. We will send the message. We will be the witnesses that you, Don Bosco, are the friend of the young and the poor. Lead us safely through the storm to the heavenly shore. You showed the young they were called to the service of their Lord. You taught them to walk in the light and the power of His Word. Help us walk in that light, make His Word our delight. We will send the message. We will be the witnesses that you, Don Bosco, are the friend of the young and the poor. Lead us safely through the storm to the heavenly shore.
About the campaign... The Campaign for the Grand Organ 50/50 R affle Ticket Cost: $100.00 ea. Only 100 Tickets Will Be Sold! Available from Choir Members and in the Parish Office Winner Receives $5,000.00! The church s current organ was installed as the gift of our former Pastor, the late Fr. Emil Francis Fardellone, S.D.B., in memory of his parents. While this organ has served us well, it is 25 years old, and the now outdated technology is beginning to fail. A determination has been made to replace the existing instrument with a Rodgers Infinity 361 organ with the most advanced stereo sampling of cathedral quality sound available. This instrument, when completed, will be the only one of its kind in southeastern Louisiana, and among the finest in all the Archdiocese. The cost of purchasing and installing the organ, as well as for the necessary mechanical and electrical accomadations that must be made, is over $100,000.00.
