Jesus Speaks to Me About Confession

Transcription:

Don t forget to thank Jesus for forgiving your sins. Jesus loves to forgive. When we are sorry for our sins and confess them, He always forgives us. My Confession Companion Dear Jesus, thank you for forgiving my sins. Thank you for your great love and mercy. Jesus, I trust in You. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Front Royal, Virginia

How to Receive the Sacrament of Penance 1. I must know what my sins are. Ask God to help you remember what your sins are and ask Him to help you be sorry for all your sins. You may use this prayer. Dear Holy Spirit, Come fill the heart of your little child! Help me to remember all my sins. I am sorry I have sinned and with the help of Your Grace, I will try my very best to be good. -1- Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. -14-

Hail Mary, Full of Grace! The Lord is with thee. blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Now, think of the 10 Commandments and try to remember your sins. This is called an examination of conscience. I am the Lord thy God thou shalt not have other Gods before Me. Did I remember to say my prayers each day? Did I try to say my prayers well? Did I work to learn more about God? Have I played fortune teller games? Have I ever told anyone that I was not Catholic? Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in Did I offend God by using His Holy Name in a disrespectful way? Did I use the Holy Name of Jesus only when talking respectfully about God? Was I always respectful of God, Our Blessed Mother, the Saints and Holy things? Have I used bad language? -13- -2-

Remember the Lord s Day and keep it holy. Did I miss Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day through my own fault? Was I late for Mass through my own fault? Did I laugh or talk in Church? Did I pay attention at Mass? Did I purposely cause others to be distracted during mass? Did I do unnecessary work on a Sunday or Holy Day? Honor Thy Father and Mother. Did I disobey my parents, teachers or elders? Did I talk back to them or try to make them angry? Did I do what my parents told me rather than what I wanted to do? Do I do my work, studying and chores well. Did I watch TV shows or go to internet sites that my parents would not want me to see? -3- Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen. -12-

5. Do the penance the Priest gives me. Thou shalt not kill. Did I fight, quarrel with or hurt anyone? Did I lose my temper? Was I unkind or mean to others? Did I make fun of anyone, pick on anyone or call them names? Have I held hatred for others or wished them harm? Do I dislike people who are different from me? Thou shalt not commit adultery. After you leave the confessional, kneel down and say your penance. It is best to kneel in the front of the church or at the altar rail to be close to Jesus. Here are some prayers the priest may ask you to say for your penance. -11- Did I respect my body as a Temple of the Holy Spirit? Did I purposely look at or do anything that was impure either alone or with others? Did I purposely dress in a way that was not modest? -4-

Thou shalt not steal. Did I take anything that did not belong to me? Did I harm the property of another? Have I cheated anyone or helped others to cheat? Did I return things or money that I borrowed? Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Did I tell a lie? Did I criticize others or call them names? Was I always truthful? Did I falsely accuse or blame someone.? Did I cause someone s good name and reputation to be harmed by repeating or saying mean things about them? -5- Then he will tell you to make an Act of Contrition. Then the priest will say the words of absolution. When the priest says Go in Peace you say: Then you may leave. O My God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen -10- Thank you Father.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor s wife. 4. I must tell my sins to the Priest. Have I purposely thought of or desired anything impure? Did I cause others to think of impure things? Did I read bad books or look at bad pictures? Go into the confessional, kneel and make the sign of the cross while saying: List your sins. Listen to the priest as he gives you your penance and remember it. -9- Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. This is my first confession. (or say how long it has been since your last confession.) These are my sins. 1... 2... 3... For these and all the sins of my past life, I am truly sorry. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor s goods. Did I unjustly wish for something that did not belong to me? Have I wanted things that belong to another person? Did I want to destroy, hide or break something that was not mine? For each confession after your first confession you will also want to think about: How long has it been since my last confession? Did I hide a mortal sin from the priest? Did I forget to confess a mortal sin? Did I do the penance the priest gave me? Did I receive Holy Communion when I was not in the state of grace. -6-

2. I must be sorry for my sins. 3. I must make up my mind not to sin again. If we are truly sorry for our sins we will not ever want to commit those sins again. We will think about how we will avoid sinning in the future. We should be sorry for our sins because we love Jesus with all our hearts and sin offends Him. When we look at the crucifix, we see how our sins made Jesus suffer. We look at his bleeding wounds. We see the wound in His Sacred Heart. It is our sins that caused Jesus to suffer and die. -7- -8-
