SERVICE OF WORD OUR MISSION: To extend the Love of God; the Grace of Jesus Christ; and the Power of the Holy Spirit. a Stephen ministry congregation

Welcome SE HABLA ESPANOL: Españolas boletines y dispositivos de traducción están disponibles en la entrada inferior del Santuario de norte. We re glad you re here! Members of this congregation have been worshiping together since 1836, when this church was formed in the State House to minister to the residents of the Capital City of Jackson. Since 1839, the congregation has gathered on the corner of North Congress and Yazoo Streets to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world through the love of God, the grace of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, encouraged disciples of Christ to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. Galloway offers many ways to receive soulful nurture, get involved with outreach, and offer witness to God s goodness throughout the Metro Jackson area and beyond. Hearing Loop installed in Lower Sanctuary. Listening devices available for non T-coil or hearing aids. If you are unable to worship with us in person, our 11:00 a.m. Sunday service is broadcast live on WAPT and streamed on our website at www.gallowayumc.org. Nursery Our nursery is available for infants through three-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m.- 12:15 p.m. The nursery is located on the first floor of the building, off of the Yazoo Street entrance. Children Children are always welcome to remain in worship. Worship activity clipboards (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the lower level entrances to the Sanctuary. Children s Church is held for 4 and 5 year olds and Kindergarteners following the Children s Moment in the 11:00 a.m. service. Please accompany your child if it is his or her first time to Children s Church. If necessary, you and your child may watch the service via closed-circuit television in the Gathering Area. SUNDAY SCHOOL We offer Sunday School for ages 3 years through adult, each Sunday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Children s Sunday School is located on the second floor of the annex. Please see any Galloway Staff Member or volunteer for assistance in finding a class. RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE: We give thanks for all that God has already given you, and we welcome you in Christian love. As members together with you in the body of Christ and in this congregation of The United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

An Order of Sunday worship *please stand in body/spirit indicates 11:00 a.m. only Call to Worship WELCOME AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH PRELUDE Amazing Grace setting by John Ness Beck Dr. Bob Knupp, organ INTROIT I Was Glad Lloyd Larson Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP We gather together in the presence of God to offer our praise and our prayers. We come before God with confidence, knowing that even when we can t find the words, God s Spirit is right here with us, praying in us and for us, Giving shape to our wordless hopes and longings, and pleading for us before the throne of grace. We come with joy to offer our worship to God who knows and loves us all. *HYMN OF PRAISE I Come With Joy The United Methodist Hymnal 617 Tune: DOVE OF PEACE; TEXT: Brian Wren, 1968 (1 Cor. 10: 16 17); Music: The Southern Harmony, 1835 I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved and free, in awe and wonder to recall his life laid down for me, his life laid down for me. I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ's communion bread, in Christ's communion bread. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us that makes us one, and strangers now are friends, and strangers now are friends. And thus with joy we meet our Lord. His presence, always near, is in such friendship better known; we see and praise him here, we see and praise him here.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM The United Methodist Hymnal 39 Walter Lewis Hendrix Son of Leah and Tal Hendrix BAPTISMAL HYMN Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters The United Methodist Hymnal 605 Tune: BEACH SPRING; Text: Ruth Duck Wash, O God, our sons and daughters, where your cleansing waters flow. Number them among your people; bless as Christ blessed long ago. Weave them garments bright and sparkling; compass them with love and light. Fill, anoint them; send your Spirit, holy dove and heart's delight. We who bring them long for nurture; by your milk may we be fed. Let us join your feast, partaking cup of blessing, living bread. God, renew us, guide our footsteps; free from sin and all its snares, one with Christ in living, dying, by your Spirit, children, heirs. O how deep your holy wisdom! Unimagined, all your ways! To your name be glory, honor! With our lives we worship, praise! We your people stand before you, water-washed and Spirit-born. By your grace, our lives we offer. Recreate us; God, transform! *GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 7:7-11 NRSV Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you Lord Christ. PRAYER & Praise THANKSGIVINGS CONCERNS CONGREGATIONAL CALL TO PRAYER Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying THE FAITH WE SING 2193 Text: Ken Medema ; Music: Ken Medema; Tune: CHILDREN PRAYING Lord, listen to your children praying. Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below! Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts. Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION PROCLAMATION OF GOD S WORD CHILDREN S MOMENT Rev. Elizabeth Henry ANTHEM Seek Ye First Wagner/ Lafferty Chancel Choir Seek ye first the kingdom of God And His righteousness; And all these things shall be added unto you. Hallelu, Hallelujah! Ask, and it shall be given unto you; Seek, and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Hallelu, Hallelujah EPISTLE LESSON Romans 8:26-27 NRSV Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. SERMON Prayer, Participation, and the Holy Spirit ENRICHING PRAYER Rev. Cary Stockett

PRAYER OF CONFESSION When we don t know how or what to pray, the Spirit knows. When all we can muster are sighs and groans, the Spirit knows. When we feel that we aren t even worthy to approach God, the Spirit goes before us and with us God welcomes us with open arms. Search us, O God, and find within us the secrets we hide. Ask us, and receive from within us the pain we bear. Keep knocking at the door of our lives until we open our hearts to your purpose, our lives to your life, and our yearning to your hope. WORDS OF ASSURANCE Christ Jesus died for us, and was raised to life for us, and is sitting at God s right hand, interceding for us. We have been given new life as God s own children. Be at peace: your sins are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Amen. Eucharist 8:30 a.m. *THE PEACE Because we have peace with God through Jesus Christ, we stand and share this peace with one another. (The people may offer one another signs of reconciliation and love.) All persons who are seeking God through the person of Jesus Christ are invited to come to the table of Christ, regardless of church affiliation. Let all be assured that this is the table of Christ, and not of any church or denomination. Our Lord welcomes you! *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, for you are our rock of safety, our stronghold, our refuge, and our glory. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life.

When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through the prophets. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, ate with sinners, and extended the invitation, Follow me. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and the cup. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER The United Methodist Hymnal 895 SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP (Gluten free wafers are available at the center serving station.) PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING God of grace, thank you for this meal. Send us forth with humble hearts and courage to follow Christ. May the blessings of this table strengthen our faith, increase our generosity, and unify our hearts, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
