ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude Traditional Hymn Medley Sallie Fletcher, Piano Welcome and Announcements *Call to Worship (from Psalm 116) One: I love the Lord, who has heard my voice and my supplications. Many: Therefore I will call upon the name of God as One: long as I live. Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Many: God has delivered my soul from death; my eyes from tears; my feet from stumbling. I walk before the Lord in the land of the living. One: All: What shall I return to the Lord for all this bounty to me? Come to us now, Spirit of wisdom. *Hymn The God of Abraham Praise (vv. 1-3) No. 49 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession One: Holy God, you created us good, and forever you hold us in your love. Yet we have wandered off and listened to other voices that shout that we are worthless and unlovable, that we must prove ourselves and earn another's love. We run after any experience that will ease our longing. We dash helter-skelter after any entertainment or novelty that will temporarily fill our ache. We look for anyone who will welcome us. We long for a love that has already been given to us. 2
All: Tender, Parenting God, remind us again and again that we are chosen and beloved by you. We have our identity given in the waters of baptism. We have our lives renewed by your holy Word and by the gifts of creation. We have a joy that is unending, and we are embraced in a love that lasts through eternity. Silent Confession *Hymn Restore in Us O God (v.1) No. 434 Restore in us, O God, the splendor of your love; renew your image in our hearts, and all our sins remove. *Assurance of God s Grace *Response The God of Abraham Praise (v. 4) No. 49 You have eternal life implanted in the soul; your love shall be your strength and stay, while ages roll. We praise you living God! We praise your holy name: the first, the last, beyond all thought, and still the same! *Passing of the Peace One: All: One: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, and also with you. Let us share that peace with one another. Prayer for Illumination Scripture Reading Genesis 18:1-15; 21:1-7 OT, pp. 14, 16 & 17 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Gifts of Our Fathers 3
*Affirmation of Faith from A Brief Statement of Faith One: All: We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God's image male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God's commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God's condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. Amen. *Hymn The Lord Is God No. 63 Offerings to God: Through Time with Our Children Through Liturgical Dance Through Times of Fatherhood Remembered Through Mission: ASP 2017 Commissioning Through Tithes and Gifts Given Offertory Anthem As Tenderly as A Father Shepherd Julie Henry, Soprano As tenderly as a Father loves his children, our God loves each one of us. As warmly as a Mother cares for her children, our God cares for each and ev- ry one of us. How Beautiful to know that God is always near to love, to care. Our God is ev- ry-where. 4
*Doxology Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow No. 608 CCLI# 3015474 *Prayer of Dedication Sharing of Joys and Concerns Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Hymnal, p. 35 One: Dear God, in whose love we live and move, we pray for a world crying out to feel loved, wanted, cherished and unique. Source of Love, hear our prayer. All: We pray for a world torn apart by conflict and war: a world that lives uneasily in a climate of fear with no clear vision for future days Source of Hope, hear our prayer. 5
One: We pray for a world that thinks less of others than of self: a world where division between nations, race, religion, neighbor and family leads to distrust. Source of Peace, hear our prayer. All: We pray for a world that is short on happiness, too busy to enjoy this world you have created, too preoccupied with living to appreciate life. Source of Joy, hear our prayer. One: We pray for a world where spiritual longing is satisfied by fashionable notions and temporary solutions with no thought for tomorrow. Source of Wisdom, hear our prayer. All: We pray for a world that needs to know your love, your hope, your peace, your joy, your wisdom, even as we offer these words handed to us by your Son: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, And the power, and the glory. Forever. Amen. *Hymn Go, My Children, with My Blessing (vv. 1 & 2) No. 547 *Charge and Benediction One: And let all God s people joyfully say: All: Alleluia! Amen! *Response Go, My Children, with My Blessing (v. 5) No. 547 Go, my children, fed and nourished, closer to me. Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free. Here my Spirit s power filled you; here my tender comfort stilled you. Go my children, fed and nourished, joyful and free. 6

Open Choir Opportunity Ed Yasick extends an invitation to the entire congregation for an inter-generational "open choir" opportunity on June 25th. We will sing "God of Great and God of Small, and we would love to have people of all ages participate. This spring we had dads sing with their kids: this is an opportunity for all parents, grandparents, etc. to come and bring their kids and grandkids along to sing together. We would love to fill the choir loft. (You will not have to sit in the choir loft for the entire service, only when it is time for the anthem.) Plan on meeting in the choir room 20 minutes before the 10:00 a.m. service. Please come and help us make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Ties That Bind: Father's Day is today: Sunday, June 18 CPC congregants recorded brief tributes to their mothers a few weeks ago for Ties That Bind: now it s Dad's turn. Consider taking a few moments to record a favorite memory about your father or something you appreciate about him. It s a Ties That Bind moment of sharing with one another about those who are still with us or have passed on. This is an opportunity to get to know one another better and honor those whom we love: our dads. To record, use your iphone or Android and search for Voice Memo. Say your name and your father's name and share with us why your dad is so special. Our young ones are welcome and encouraged to participate as well! Send your recording to Caroline Derifaj at 919-452-5095 or cderifaj@gmail.com. Recordings will also be shared on the Ties That Bind web page at https://tinyurl.com/y8q5x8ks CPC s Ties That Bind (TTB) audio recording ministry, which is patterned after NPR sstorycorps program, was approved by Session in the spring of 2016 as a means of addressing one of the top three priorities established by our congregation- to be more intentional in our effort to connect with one another, our own community and the world. 9

The team will lodge at a local elementary school with AC and hot showers. As former ASP team members know, this is welcome news! As our team travels, they are undergirded by your generous and loving support as a congregation, as in years past. Below is information from ASP about Scott County. Statistics tell one story, though not the whole story. ASP is about making homes warmer, safer and drier for God s people in need in the heart of Appalachia. Of equal if not greater significance, though, are relationships the mission team members form with each other, the ASP staff, and especially with the families they serve. What they see, experience, and share can be transformative enough to last a lifetime. Let us remember this year s team in our thoughts and prayers, along with all the families they will meet, and the experiences they are yet to have. History of ASP in Scott County: ASP has served Scott County on and off for several years. ASP works well in Scott County because an existing non-profit organization, the Morgan Scott Project, already serves families having many needs during the year. They assist ASP in finding families to assist, and follow up our work after volunteers leave the area. Population: 21,947 Terrain: Partially mountainous, partially agricultural.
