Mary Magdala, seeing the stone rolled away from Christ s burial place, runs to tell the disciples what she thinks is bad news. The grave is empty. Jesus body must have been stolen. Clearly, resurrection isn t on her radar. As it says at the end of the passage, They did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Only later, when Mary saw Jesus again face-to-face, did she come to understand what had actually happened. We, of course, know that the empty tomb really means good news! We know that the cross was not the end of the story, that Jesus conquered death, walked again amongst his followers, and ascended into heaven where he reigns even now. Unlike the first Christians, we have the testimony of history, the record of Scripture, and the benefit of tradition at our disposal. We have more reason to believe than Mary, Peter, or John did on first seeing the tomb! We need not waste any time running around like they did in search of the Savior. We know that Jesus is alive, and that sin and death have met their match. Where, O death, is your victory? we can now proclaim with St. Paul. Where, O death, is your sting? (1 Cor 15:55). Jesus has won! He is triumphant! This is the joy of Easter, based in fact and bolstered by faith. And we are the heirs of this great joy. As we sing in the Easter psalm, This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. On this most glorious of holy days, as we gather to feast with friends and family, let us be sure to recall the reason for our celebration: Christ is risen! Truly he is risen! Alleluia! -3-

From the Pastor s Pen My dear People, During this past week we have witnessed the temptations Jesus faced to give in to despair or the loss of faith. On Holy Thursday faced with the specter of the agony of the Cross in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus sweat blood and pleaded with His heavenly Father to take this cup of suffering away for Him and allow Him to choose an easier way. On Good Friday Jesus faced not only the loss of the support of most of His closest friends, but also hostile rejection from the crowds He had come to save. Physical and emotional pain can also challenge our faith and lead us to the brink of hopelessness and despair. Faith is believing in what we cannot see and therefore faith means taking a risk. We are being challenged to trust completely in a God we cannot see. For that reason even if we have the strongest faith there will be times of doubt when our faith is challenged even our greatest saints suffered the dark night of the soul when the world of Jesus on the Cross became theirs ( my God, my God why have you abandoned me? ). Some of you have read about the struggles of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta in her long experience of the apparent absence of the feeling of God s presence to her. She carried on her work by the sheer faith that God loved her, was with her, and supported her in her work even though she lacked the comforting feeling of His presence. It appears that God tests and strengthens our faith in much the same way as an occupational therapist pushes us to painfully go beyond what we believe a limb or joint is able to do. Jesus said that He is the very life of God come down from Heaven and no one can live without Him. He is the very bread of our lives. If we believe in Him, eat of His flesh and drink His blood, we pass the test of faith. Many of the disciples did not. Perhaps you have been disappointed by a friend or loved one. Or, perhaps there have been times when you felt alone and unwanted. It may help to remember Peter s response to Jesus, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. In our celebration of Easter we receive the greatest confirmation of faith that God can give. Our worst enemy and fear is death which apparently ends our very existence. At Easter, Jesus confronts death head-on even into the tomb. In His Resurrection, Jesus shows us the power of faith to overcome even death itself. Baptized into Jesus death we await a glorious Resurrection with Him at the end of our earthly pilgrimage. With such an experience and powerful guide and companion at our side, we should continue our lives with renewed vigor and trust. Christ has died Christ has risen Christ will come again! Be assured of my prayers for all of you and those dearest to you at my Easter Masses. -4-

Liturgy & Music EASTER CANDLE Br. Fran The first sound of the Easter season is the crackling of new fire. Even before the presider greets the people, the Easter flame burns to warm the hearts of believers and to fascinate our eyes, which long to behold the glory of God. The Easter candle that leads the procession into the church at the Easter Vigil becomes a dominant symbol for the season. Tall, bright, decorative, stately, it creates the first light for the faithful and dispels the darkness which belies our sins. The Easter candle first announces the news of the resurrection, followed by the Glory to God, the Alleluia, the Gospel, the homily, and, of course, the Eucharist. All join to make the same proclamation. Christ is risen! So big is this message that it takes fifty days to celebrate. That Easter candle burns in our churches every day during those seven weeks, proclaiming: Christ is risen, and we too may rise! The Easter candle appears in our liturgy on two other very significant occasions: baptisms and funerals. Whenever infants are baptized, we light the Easter candle. The resurrection of Christ foreshadows our own resurrection. Baptism incorporates us into the body of Christ and gives us a share in his resurrection. Whenever the baptismal waters are poured, the Easter candle burns bright. Parents and godparents light a baptismal candle from the Easter candle. They accept the responsibility of keeping the flame of faith alive in the heart of the newly baptized. Parents carry this candle home, where it may shine on baptismal anniversaries to symbolize the first news of the risen Christ. We also light the Easter candle at funerals. In the midst of our grief, we call upon the symbols that enliven our faith. Several images of baptism reappear at the funeral: the sprinkling with holy water, the placing of a white pall (like a white garment) over the casket and the lighting of the Easter candle. Christ rose from the dead so that we too might pass from death to life. Every death reminds us of Easter. And every Easter gives us hope that death is not the end, but the passage from darkness to eternal light. -7-

On Mother s Day weekend, May 10 th & 11 th, Saint Anthony of Padua will once again be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. They provide maternity housing, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your donation. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children. -16-
