TOPIC 1: THE AHLUL BAYT: We are known as Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslims. Shia means follower. Ithna-Asher means 12 (for the 12 Aimmah). We are also known as Ja fari because our 6 th Imam, Imam Ja far as-sadiq (A), taught us most of the rules that we follow. Although the basic belief of all Muslims is the same, there are 72 different groups in Islam. The rules of religion are slightly different in each group. Most of the groups have died away, but there are still two major groups left: - The Sunni they believe in the Holy Prophet but not in the 12 Aimmah. - The Shia follows the Holy Prophet and the 12 Aimmah. HADITH-E-SAFINAH: AHLUL BAYT ARE LIKE PROPHET NUH S ARK Hadith-e-Safinah is when our Holy Prophet Muhammad (S) compared his Ahlul Bayt (A) as Prophet Nuh s ark. Whoever loves and follows them will be saved and whoever goes against their purity will drown. While holding the door of Holy Ka aba, Abu Dhar told that he had heard Prophet Muhammad (S) say, "My family among you is like Noah's ark. He who sails in it will be safe, but he who holds back from it will be drowned." Now you know. That by saying we are Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslims we are telling everyone that we follow the Holy Prophet and the 12Aimmah (the Ahlul Bayt). We are also known as Ja fari because our 6 th Imam, Imam Ja far as-sadiq (A), taught us most of the rules that we follow. Tareekh Page 4.2 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 3: BIBI KHADIJA (A): Bibi Khadija (A) was the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (S), and the mother of Bibi Fatimah (A). Her father was a wealthy trader. When he died, Bibi Khadija (A) continued his business. Soon, she was the richest trader in Makka. Prophet Muhammad (S) worked for Bibi Khadija (A), but she was impressed with him and soon they were married. They soon had two sons, Qasim and Abdullah. But, both boys died while still very young. This made the Holy Prophet very sad, and when his cousin Imam Ali (A) was born, he brought him up in his house as his own son. The Holy Prophet (S) and Bibi Khadija (A) then had a daughter, Bibi Fatimah (A). Prophet Muhammad (S) used to spend a lot of time in a cave on Mount Hira near Makka. There, he would think about Allah and wonder at His creations. Sometimes he would stay on Hira for many days at a time. Bibi Khadija (A) would regularly visit him, bringing food and water and making sure he was comfortable. When Prophet Muhammad (S) was finally commanded by Allah to begin teaching Islam, Bibi Khadija (A) was the first woman to accept his message and become a Muslim. She gave all her money to help spread Islam. Bibi Khadija (A) was married to the Holy Prophet (S) for many years before she died. She is buried in Makka. The Prophet s uncle, Abu Talib also died in this year that has been named the Year of Grief or Aamul Huzn in Arabic. While Bibi Khadija (A) was alive, the Holy Prophet (S) did not marry another woman, and later said that she was the best of his wives. Tareekh Page 4.6 www.madressa.net

He also said that she was one of the 4 perfect women who had ever lived. The other three are: - Bibi Asiya (wife of Firaun), - Bibi Maryam (mother of Prophet Isa), and - Bibi Fatimah (A). Now you know. Bibi Khadija was the first wife of our Prophet Muhammad (S) She is the mother of Bibi Fatimah (A) She was the richest trader in Makka She was the first woman to accept Islam She gave all her money to spread Islam The year she died is called the Year of Grief WORKSHEET: BIBI KHADIJA (A): Crossword on Bibi Khadija (A): 1 2 3 4 5 6 ACROSS 1. THE HOUSE OF BIBI KHADIJA (A): WAS ALWAYS OPEN TO HELP... Refugees Homeless Orphans Poor Oppressed The House of Generosity and Kindness A famous writer described Bibi Khadija's house as follows: Every orphan who didn't have anyone to depend on came to this house Every father who couldn't get food for his children came to this house Every woman who was homeless, came to this house Everybody who suffered and became shelter less came to this house All of them knew the way to Bibi Khadija's (A) house and went there. They took refuge in her kindness and wealth. The sore hearts of those people were treated with her favour and grace. Tareekh Page 4.8 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 4: BIBI FATIMAH (A): Once, when Imam Hasan (A) and Imam Husain (A) were children they both fell ill. Their parents, Imam Ali (A) and Bibi Fatimah (A), made a Nadhr that they would fast three days if their children became well. Nadhr is a promise that you make to Allah to do something extra for His pleasure if your wish comes true. Both Imam children recovered from their illness very soon. Their parents decided to fast the next day. The young Imams (A) also decided to fast, as well as their maid Bibi Fizza. On the first day of the fasting, Bibi Fatimah (A) prepared some bread to break their fast with. In the evening, they all prayed then sat down to break their fast. Just as they were about to eat their bread, a poor man knocked at the door and asked for something to eat. They all gave their bread to the beggar, and broke their fast with water only. The next day, they fasted for a second time. Again, Bibi Fatimah (A) made bread for their Iftar. This time, as they were about to break their fast, an orphan came to their door asking for food. Although Bibi Fatimah (A) and her family had not eaten for two days, they all happily gave their loaf of bread to the orphan and again slept without any food. On the third day of their fasting, as they sat down to break their fast, a prisoner knocked at the door asking for food. Tareekh Page 4.9 www.madressa.net

Without hesitating, they again gave away their bread. Allah revealed Sura Ad-Dahr in the Holy Qur'an, in praise of the sacrifice made by this holy family. Moral: Always think of others before yourself. It is not how much you give but the intention with which you give. WORKSHEET: BIBI FATIMAH (A): What was the Nadhr the family kept and why did they make this Nadhr? Who did they give their food to on each of the three days? Day 1: Day 2: Day 3: What was the sacrifice that this family made for which a Surah of the Holy Qur an was revealed and what was the name of this Surah? Tareekh Page 4.10 www.madressa.net

BIBI FATIMA (A): SPECIAL PRAYERS BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP: Bibi Fatimah Zahra (A) is known to have recounted this interesting true story: She said: One day, as I was preparing myself to sleep, suddenly I saw my father, Prophet Muhammad (S) entering our room. He said: "My beloved daughter, Fatimah Zahra! Never sleep at night, unless you have accomplished things!" 1 st : You have to read entire Noble Qur'an from the beginning to end. 2 nd : You have to ask for the great Prophets of Allah to intercede in your favour after your death. 3 rd : You should remember that, you have to make all the faithful believers happy and pleased with you. 4 th : Finally, you have to go to Makkah, and accomplish the Pilgrimage of Hajj Bibi Fatimah Zahra (A) said: "After having said that, my father, Prophet Muhammad (S) began to perform his prayer and I had to wait until he finished his prayer to ask more information from him." I said most confused: "O Messenger of Allah! You have ordered me to do four things before sleep. But beloved father, I cannot see myself executing such things! I am unable to accomplish them at this late hour!" Prophet Muhammad (S) smiled graciously and answered: 1 st : "If you recite Suratul Ikhlas,3 times, it is as though you have read the entire Noble Qur'an from the beginning to end. 2 nd : If you say greetings and salutations to me and to the other great Prophets, you make us intercede in your favour. 3 rd : If you pray for the faithful believers, you have made them happy and content. 4 th : And at last, if you say (dhikr) "Subhanallahi, Wal hamdulillaahi, Wala ilaaha illallaahu, Wallaahu Akbar" it is as though you have accomplished the Pilgrimage of Hajj Tareekh Page 4.11 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 5: THE FIVE EIDS INTRODUCTION: Eid means an event which happens again and again. In Islam, we celebrate Eid as the happy festival which occurs every year. In Sura Al Maidah, Prophet Isa asked Allah for food from Heaven because his followers wanted a miracle to increase their faith, and to always celebrate the occasion with joy. We are lucky that we have five types of Eids in a year: 1. Eid ul-juma 2. Eid ul-haj 3. Eid ul-fitr 4. Eid-e-Gadhir 5. Eid-e-Mubahila WORKSHEET: THE FIVE EIDS INTRODUCTION: Write in each cake the 5 types of Eids that we celebrate each year: What does the word Eid mean? The word Eid means Tareekh Page 4.12 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 6: EID-UL-JUMA : Juma means Friday, and for all Muslims it is a very religious day. The Holy Prophet (S) has said that prayers and worship on Juma are many times better than any other day. In the Islamic calendar, the night comes before the day. So, Friday begins at the time of Maghrib Salaat on Thursday. There are certain A amaal recommended for Juma. For the night of Juma (Thursday night): Recite Sura Fatiha for those who have gone back to Allah Recite Suratul Yasiin & Dua Kumail For the day of Juma (Friday): Do ghusl for Juma Cut your nails, wear nice clothes and apply perfume Visit the graves of our loved ones Gather in mosque and pray Salaat together Tareekh Page 4.13 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: EID-UL-JUMA : What day is Eid-ul-Juma? The Day of Eid-ul-Juma is: On one page write all the A amal you can do on the night of Juma and on the other page write all the A amaal you can do on the day of Juma : Night of Juma Day of Juma Tareekh Page 4.14 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 7: EID-UL-HAJ ALSO CALLED EID-UL-ADHA Eid ul-haj is also known as Eid ul-adha (Eid of Sacrifice). It takes place on the 10 th of Dhulhijja, and marks the end of Haj of Muslims to Makka. This Eid honours the sacrifice of Prophet Ismail by his father, Prophet Ibrahim. One day, Prophet Ibrahim dreamt that he was sacrificing his young son, Prophet Ismail. This day is called Yawme Tarwiyah which means, the Day of the First Dream. Prophet Ibrahim often received Allah's commands in his dreams, but because he was being asked to actually kill his son, he wondered whether it was real. Allah s comman He had the same dream the next day, and was now sure it was a true command. So, the 9 th of Zilhaj is known as Yawme Arafaat, which means the Day of Knowledge So, Prophet Ibrahim took his son into the desert. On the way, Shaitan, disguised as an old man, tried to convince Prophet Ibrahim that he was making a terrible mistake in killing his son. Three times Shaitan came, and each time Prophet Ibrahim made him go away by throwing seven small stones at him. When they reached Mina, Prophet Ibrahim laid his son on the ground and took a knife. Tareekh Page 4.15 www.madressa.net

Prophet Ismail saw how upset his father was, and asked him to blindfold himself so that he would not have to see his son die. Prophet Ibrahim did as his son requested, and then cut the throat of his son. But when he removed the blindfold, he was surprised to see that he had slaughtered a male sheep instead, and that his son was standing safe beside him. Allah was so pleased with Prophet Ibrahim that he has made this sacrifice of a sheep wajib for all Muslims as the last stage of Haj. Now you know. Eidul Haj is also called Eidul Adha This Eid honours the sacrifice of Prophet Ismail by his father Prophet Ibrahim Tareekh Page 4.16 www.madressa.net

A BEAUTIFUL STORY ABOUT EID-UL-HAJ OR EID-UL-ADHA: THE BICYCLE STORY: My father never liked anyone who was lazy or anyone who wasted what they had so that they never had enough. But for those who were really in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I (Mahdi) learned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving. It was a cold winter day before Eidul Adha (Haj) 1425 A.H. in a village near Kashmir. I was fifteen years old and feeling very sad because there just had not been enough money to buy me the bicycle that I had wanted for Eidul Adha. I was still feeling sorry for myself, when my father came back from outside and said, "Come on, Mahdi, dress up well, it's cold out tonight." I was really upset then. Not only was not I am getting the bicycle for Eid, but now my father was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We had already done all the chores, and I could not think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this. But I knew he was not very patient, so I got up and put my boots back on and got my cap and coat. My mum gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I did not know what. O No! I thought, more work because there in front of the house, the horses were already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do was not going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up this sled unless we were going to carry a big load. My father was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I was not happy. When I was on, my father pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. "I think we will put on the high sideboards," he said. "Here, help me." The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high sideboards on. After we had exchanged the sideboards, my father went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood - What was he doing? Finally I said something. "Dad," I asked, "what are you doing?" Tareekh Page 4.18 www.madressa.net

"You been by the Widow Mrs. Mukhtar's house lately?" he asked. The Widow Mrs. Mukhtar lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I had been by, but so what? "Yeah," I said, "Why?" "I rode by just today," he said. "Little Jaffer was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They are out of wood, Mahdi." That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another armload of wood. I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, we stopped and then he went to the house. When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand. "What's in the little sack?" I asked. "Shoes. They're out of shoes. Little Jaffer just had gunny sacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got the children some sweets too. It just would not be Eidul Adha (Haj) without Mithai." We rode the two miles to Widow Mukhtar's home, pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what my father was doing. We did not have much our selves. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we did not have any money, so why was he buying them shoes and sweets? Really, why was he doing any of this? Mrs. Mukhtar had closer neighbours than us; it should not have been our concern. We reached the Mukhtar's house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible, and then we took the sweets, flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, "Who is it?" "It is me Karim Khan, Ma'am, and my son, Mahdi. Could we come in for a bit?" Mrs. Mukhtar opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Mrs. Mukhtar fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp. Tareekh Page 4.19 www.madressa.net

"We brought you a few things, Ma'am," my father said and set down the sack of flour. I put the sweet on the table. Then he handed her the sack that had the shoes in it. She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children - strong shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. Tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at my father like she wanted to say something, but it would not come out. "We brought a load of wood too, Ma'am," he said. He turned to me and said, "Mahdi, go bring in enough to last a while. Let's get that fire up to size and heat this place up." I wasn't the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and as much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too. In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks with so much gratitude in her heart that she could not speak. My heart swelled within me and a joy that I had never known before, filled my soul. I had given at Eid many times before, but never when it had made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people. I soon had the fire blazing and everyone's spirits soared. The kids started giggling when my father handed them each a piece of sweet and Mrs. Mukhtar looked on with a smile that probably had not crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us. "May Allah bless you," she said. "I know Allah has sent you. The children and I have been praying that He would send some help to spare us." In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in my eyes again. I had never thought of my father in those exact terms before, but after Mrs. Mukhtar mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than my father had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for my Mum and me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it. My father insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Tareekh Page 4.20 www.madressa.net

Tears were running down Widow Mrs. Mukhtar's face again when we stood up to leave. My father took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clung to him and did not want us to go. I could see that they missed their father, and I was glad that I still had mine. At the door he turned to Mrs. Mukhtar and said, "My wife wanted me to invite you and the children for Eidul Adha (Haj) dinner tomorrow. The chicken will be more than the three of us can eat, we will be by to get you about five. It will be nice to have some little ones around again. Mrs. Mukhtar nodded and said, "Thank you, Brother Karim Khan. I do not have to say, "'May Allah Bless you,' I know for certain that He will." Out on the sled I felt warmth that came from deep within and I did not even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, my father turned to me and said, "Mahdi, I want you to know something. Your Mum and I have been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that bicycle for you, but we did not have quite enough. Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your Mum and I were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that bicycle, and I started into town this morning to do just that. But on the way I saw little Jaffer out scratching in the woodpile, so I spent the money for shoes and a little sweet for those children. I hope you understand." I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad he had done it. Now the bicycle seemed very low on my list of importance. My father had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on Widow Mrs. Mukhtar's face and the glowing smiles of her three children. For the rest of my life, Whenever, I saw any of the Mukhtar's, or split a block of wood, I remembered riding home beside my father that night. He had given me much more than a bicycle that night; he had given me the best Eidul Adha of my life. Moral: Eid is a time for sharing. Sometimes we get more happiness from giving than receiving. We must thank Allah for all that we have and always try and help those who do not have all that we do. Tareekh Page 4.21 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 8: EID-UL-FITR: Eid ul-fitr is the first day after the Holy month of Ramadhan. It is on the 1 st of Shawwaal. Fitr means to break, and it marks the end of the fasting period. It is a happy occasion because: During Mahe Ramadhan we are in the habit of committing few or no sins Through our prayers in Mahe Ramadhan, Allah may have forgiven our sins Allah has made a Wajib charity of Zakat ul-fitr for every family at the end of Ramadhan. This charity helps poor people who do not have the money to feed themselves. Tareekh Page 4.22 www.madressa.net

A STORY ABOUT EID-UL-FITR: MY BROTHER: Shuaib received a car from his brother as a Ramadhan Eid present. On Eidul Fitr when Shuaib came out of his office, a poor little boy was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. "Is this your car, Uncle?" he asked. Shuaib nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Ramadhan Eid." The boy was surprised. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish..." He hesitated. Of course Shuaib knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said really shocked Shuaib. "I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that." Shuaib looked at the boy and then he asked, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?" "Oh yes, I would love that." After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining and said, "Uncle, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Shuaib smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Shuaib was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Shuaib heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car. "There he is, uncle, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Ramadhan Eid and it did not cost him a penny. And some day I'm gonna give you one just like it...then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Shop windows that I have been trying to tell you about." Shuaib got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Eidul Fitr, Shuaib learned what Prophet Muhammad (S) meant when he had said: "love for your brother what you love for yourself". Tareekh Page 4.24 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 9: EID-E-GHADEER: On the 18 th of Zilhaj, Allah commanded Prophet Muhammad (S) in the Qur an to stop at a place called Ghadeer-e-Khum (the pond of Khum). A friend of the Prophet called all the people to gather around. The Holy Prophet (S) led the Salaat. Then, he stood so that all the people could see him. He told everyone that when he died, he would leave behind two special things: the Book of Allah (the Qur an) The Ahlul Bayt (his family) BIBI FATIMAH (A) & 12 IMAMS (A) The Prophet (S) explained that if the people follow BOTH the Qur an AND the Ahlul Bayt, Allah will always be happy with them. But if the people follow only the Qur an, and don t listen to the Ahlul Bayt, then Allah will NOT be happy with them. Then Prophet Muhammad (S) held up Imam Ali (A) hand, showing him to all the people, and said whoever considered the Prophet (S) their leader must also consider Imam Ali (A) their leader. Tareekh Page 4.25 www.madressa.net

Then, he prayed to Allah to love those people who love Imam Ali (A), and hate those who do not love him. Allah then said that the religion of Islam had been completed that day. This day is known as Eid-e-Ghadeer. Now you know. Eid-e-Ghadeer is when Allah commanded our Holy Prophet (S) to stop at the place called Ghadeer-e-Khum Here he told the people that he was leaving behind 2 special things One was the Book of Allah, the Holy Quran and the other was the Ahlul Bayt, his Family He also told the people that if they believed him to be their leader then they must also believe that Imam Ali (A) is their leader Then Allah sent down an Ayah of Quran saying that on that day Islam had been completed WORKSHEET: EID-E-GHADEER: Write the meaning of the following ayat, then learn it. It means: Write what 2 things the Holy Prophet (S) said he was leaving behind. 1. 2. Tareekh Page 4.26 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 10: EID-E-MUBAHILA: The Holy Prophet (S) had sent letters to many different countries inviting them to Islam. One letter was sent to the Christians of Najran. The Christians wanted to meet the Holy Prophet (S) When they arrived in Madina, the Holy Prophet (S) was sad to see them dressed in silk and gold, and he ignored them. Imam Ali (A) asked them to change into simple clothes, and the Holy Prophet (S) was then happy to see them. They talked, but the Christians would not listen to the Prophet (S). They believed in Prophet Isa as the son of God, because he had no father. Allah sent down a verse from Sura Aali Imran, saying that if they called Prophet Isa the son of God (as he has no father), then they should also call Prophet Adam the same, because he was born without a father or mother. The Christians did not have an answer to this, but they still argued because they did not want to say they were wrong. Allah ordered the Holy Prophet (S) to do "Mubahila" with the Christians. Mubahila means to curse one another. The next day, on the 24 th of Zilhaj, the Holy Prophet (S) came out for Mubahila with Imam Hasan (A), Imam Husain (A), Bibi Fatimah (A) and Imam Ali (A). The Christians, on seeing the shining faces of the Panjatan began to tremble and shake. They backed away and realised that they had failed. Tareekh Page 4.27 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: EID-E-MUBAHILA: On what date did Mubahila occur? Mubahila occurred on: For the challenge of Mubahila, the Holy Prophet (S) came out with the following people. Why and who did they represent? Imam Hasan (A) Imam Husain (A) Prophet Muhammad (S) Bibi Fatimah (A) Imam Ali (A) Now you know. Eid-e-Mubahila when Prophet Muhammad (S) invited different countries to Islam The Christians wanted to meet him so they came dressed in silk and gold Imam Ali (A) told them to go and change into simple clothes and then come back Then when they talked the Christians didn t want to listen because they believed that Prophet Isa was the son of God Allah sent down an Ayah explaining that even Prophet Adam didn t have a father but even he wasn t the son of God The Christians still argued so Allah ordered the Holy Prophet (S) to have a Mubahila this means to curse one another Prophet Muhammad (S) only brought Imam Hasan (A), Imam Husain (A), Bibi Fatimah (A) and Imam Ali (A) when the Christians saw their shining faces they backed off and realised they had failed Tareekh Page 4.28 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 11: NAMES OF ISLAMIC MONTHS: In Islam we follow the Lunar (moon) calendar as opposed to the Solar (sun) calendar. To follow the Lunar calendar, we use the shape of the moon to work out which day of the month it is. The Islamic month has 29 or 30 days, while the calendar month has 30 or 31 days. The Islamic months are: MUHARRAM SAFAR RABIUL AWWAL RABIUL AKHAR JAMAAD UL AWWAL JAMAAD UL AKHAR RAJAB SHABAN RAMADHAN SHAWWAAL DHULQA'ADA DHULHIJJA Tareekh Page 4.29 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: NAMES OF ISLAMIC MONTHS: Make your own Islamic calendar. Your Teacher will give you a sheet with the names written on it Cut along the dotted line, then stick it on some cardboard. Then slide the card with the slits cut through the months card. Tareekh Page 4.30 www.madressa.net

MOON PROJECT As we every Islamic month begins and ends with the birth of the new moon. 1. Let each group of children (4-6 children in a group), work together to create a night sky on a black or dark blue construction paper. If they can draw stars by themselves, let them add stars, or let them stick on stars (the self-sticking kind) or a combination of both. They can use white, yellow, gold, or silver crayons, pencils, or markers. 2. Create a moon for every group or let them do it, if they can cut a circle in a white construction paper. You may also use a black construction paper then colour it white or silver to represent a full moon. 3. slice each moon into 6 pieces, they will be crescent shapes. You may cut the moon into two halves first, then each half into three pieces. Number these pieces on the back to remember which piece comes next. Remember that each half moon takes seven days to develop. It takes two weeks to develop into a full moon. Each piece will represent a stage of the moon. 4. As you go through the month, ask the children to observe the moon every night from the first day. When they come to the class ask them to use glue or better to use Velcro, to stick the first piece (crescent) on the night sky background. Every Sunday as they see the moon getting bigger, you can let them add the next piece. Keep doing this to the end of the month. Remember the second half of the month you will have to remove pieces, every Sunday, until there is no moon at the end of the month "phases of the moon art" crescent, half, gibbous, full, gibbous, half, crescent Tareekh Page 4.31 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 12: PROPHET MUSA 1: Prophet Musa grew up in the palace of Firaun: As the years passed, Prophet Musa grew up strong and healthy. He then left Egypt and went to Madyan where he married Safura daughter of Prophet Shuaib After staying in Madyan for a while, he left to return to Egypt. EGYP MADYA N EGYP On their way to Egypt in the severe winter night Prophet Musa and his wife who had lost their way, saw a fire in the distance. Prophet Musa told his wife to stay where she was and he went to the fire, thinking he would bring some of it back. When he reached the fire, he saw that the flames were coming from a green tree, but there was no one there. While Prophet Musa looked around in surprise, he suddenly heard a voice saying, "O Musa, I am your Lord!" The voice then asked him to throw his staff onto the ground. At once it changed into a serpent, scaring him. He was then commanded to lift the snake without fear and as he did so, it changed back into a stick. Tareekh Page 4.32 www.madressa.net

Next he was told to put his hand under his armpit. When he drew it out again, his hand glowed with a bright light, like the sun. The Divine voice said to him, "O Musa! These are the two great Signs of your Lord. Go back to Fir'aun and his people and invite them towards your Lord!" Prophet Musa told Fir'aun that he was a Messenger of Allah and that he was speaking the truth. He threw his staff on the ground and it changed into a snake. The miracle frightened Fir'aun and he turned to his ministers for advice. They told him that Prophet Musa was just a good magician and that their own magicians could easily perform such tricks. Fir'aun called all the great magicians to his court. When they were told what had to be done, they were not worried. They threw pieces of rope on the ground and these cords began to wriggle like snakes. But when Prophet Musa (A) cast his staff down his serpent ate all the pieces of rope. The magicians immediately realised that this was no magic but a miracle, and threw themselves in prostration saying, "We believe in the faith of Musa". This made Fir'aun very angry and he warned them that if they did not take back their words, they would be killed. They did not change their minds and so he killed them. WORKSHEET: PROPHET MUSA 1: Draw below the two miracles that Allah gave to Prophet Musa (A): Tareekh Page 4.33 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 13: PROPHET MUSA 2: Allah told Prophet Musa to warn Fir'aun that He would punish him and his people if they continued in their ways; but Fir'aun was too proud to listen to the warning. Soon lots of locusts ate away their crops. The River Nile got flooded and the people suffered with lice and illnesses. When all of this happened the people rushed to Prophet Musa asking him to pray for their relief and promised to follow his religion. But when they were cured and the situation improved, they returned to their idol worship. Prophet Musa collected the people of Bani Israa'il and left for Palestine. Fir'aun learnt of their escape and followed them with a huge army. When the Bani Israa'il reached the Red Sea they saw Fir'aun approaching and were sure they were going to be killed. However, Prophet Musa struck the waters of the sea with his staff and the waters parted, making a dry path. The people rushed through and crossed safely. When Fir'aun saw the path he entered the sea at the head of his army. But while he was in the middle of the sea the waters suddenly closed around him and his men. Tareekh Page 4.34 www.madressa.net

In the final moments of his life Fir'aun realised the Power and Greatness of Allah, but it was too late. Fir'aun and his people drowned under the deep sea. This is how Allah rescued the Bani Israa'il from Fir'aun. Prophet Musa had promised the Bani Israa'il that once they left Egypt he would bring to them a Divine Book for their guidance. Prophet Musa prayed to Allah for that Book. Allah told him to come to Mount Sinai and pass thirty nights there. When Prophet Musa returned to his people from Mount Sinai, he had with him the Tawrat, with the Divine revelations written on tablets of stone. However, while he was away, a man called Samiri made a golden calf by collecting gold from the people. Then. he had sprinkled some dust into its mouth, which he had collected from under the feet of Angel Jibraeel on the day that Fir'aun had drowned. So, the calf made a sound and the people began to worship it. The made Prophet Musa very angry, and he asked them if they too wanted to displease Allah as Fir'aun had done. The people blamed Samiri for misguiding them and were sorry for their actions. Prophet Musa then got the golden calf melted and threw every trace of it in the sea Tareekh Page 4.35 www.madressa.net

A STORY ABOUT PROPHET MUSA: One day Prophet Musa was passing through a unfruitful hill. He noticed a pious person busy in prayer sitting in a cave of the hill. Prophet Musa felt the urge to meet and talk to the pious person. Prophet Musa went near and greeted him. The pious person asked without much interest, "Who are you?" Prophet Musa said, "I am Musa!" The pious person asked, "Are you the Prophet Musa? Prophet Musa said, "Yes!" The pious person said, "Then ask Allah to Grant my wish!" Prophet Musa asked, "What is it that you want?" The pious person said, "Since the last one hundred years I am sitting here praying to Allah. I don't do anything other than the Prayer. Ask Allah, what He will give me for my efforts?" Prophet Musa said, "I shall find about it immediately." He immediately climbed up the hill and called aloud, "O Sustainer Allah! This person wants to know about the reward for his prayers! Tell me, what shall I inform him?" He heard the sound, "O Musa! Tell him, we shall inform him about his reward tomorrow." Prophet Musa went to the pious person and gave the message to him. The pious person said, "Its fine! Tomorrow is not much of a time!" The pious person was in the habit of going to a nearby canal early every morning for bathing and fetching some water for his use. Therefore, the next morning too he started for the canal but he lost his way and reached somewhere else. Because of the sun's heat he became very thirsty and tired. He sat on a lonely boulder and started thinking about his death. At that time he found another person coming from the other direction. He waved to the person to come to him. When the person came closer, he asked him to help him with some water. The visiting person said, "Where is any water in this jungle? Whatever little I have is only for me." Tareekh Page 4.37 www.madressa.net

The pious person started crying. The other person said, "Fine! What will you give me if I give you a glass of water?" The pious person said, "I don't have anything. I have been busy in the cave praying for the last 100 years." The other person said, "If you agree to transfer to me the Rewards for your prayers of 100 years, I shall give you a glass of water." The pious person thought, if he lived, he could pray for a further period to get the Reward from Allah. He said, "I am ready to transfer to you my reward for the 100 years of my prayers. The other person gave him a glass full of water and the pious person returned to his cave. In the morning Prophet Musa got a Revelation that the pious person exchanged his 100 years' prayers to another person in exchange for a glass of water. Ask the man to settle the value of the glasses of water that he had been drinking during the last 100 years! Therefore, Prophet Musa went to the cave and told to the person that he had a message for him from Allah. The pious person said, "O Prophet Musa! I have already sold my 100 years of prayers!" Prophet Musa said, "Yes! I know. But Allah has said that when the value of 100 years of prayer is one glass of water, then you must settle the value of the water you had been drinking over the last hundred years." 2 When the pious person heard this, he was shocked and shouted, "O Prophet Musa! Please ask to Allah to forgive my sins! Allah is The Most Kind and The Most Merciful!" Prophet Musa got the Revelation, "tell the pious person! Your prayer of this moment pleased Allah more than your prayers of a hundred years and Allah has given to you rewards for a years of prayers!" "The sin that makes you sad and repentant is more liked by Allah than the good deed which turns you big-headed " Imam Ali (A) Tareekh Page 4.38 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 14: PROPHET ISA: Prophet Isa s mother = Bibi Maryam He had no father. When Prophet Isa was 30 years old, he got the order of Allah to start his mission and the Divine Book, Injil, was revealed to him. He too could perform miracles like: - make a dead person alive again - make a blind person see again - curing illnesses These miracles made the Jew believe in him and others became his enemies. He chose 12 people from his followers and taught them from the Injil, so that they could travel and teach others. The people who hated him, tried to kill him. They gave, Yahuda, one of his followers, 30 pieces of silver to tell them which house Prophet Isa was in. They wanted to nail him to a cross and kill him. At this time, Allah raised Prophet Isa to the heavens to keep him safe. In the meantime, Yahuda went to his house but found it empty. While he was there, Allah changed his face to look like Prophet Isa s. When he came out of the house to tell the enemies that the house was empty, they grabbed him and took him away. Although he told them that he wasn t Prophet Isa, they wouldn t believe him and he was crucified instead. Today the Jews and Christians believe that Prophet Isa died on the cross. When our 12 th Imam (A) re-appears, Prophet Isa will come down from the heavens and pray behind him. Prophet Muhammad (S) Tareekh Page 4.39 www.madressa.net

PROPHET ISA: A POEM ABOUT PROPHET S AND THEIR BOOKS: Allah sent the Prophets to teach humans That Allah is one without partners or sons and from all evils we should keep away. and only to Allah we should pray. Of all the Prophets Adam was the first and he had an enemy ShaItan the cursed. After Adam many more Prophets came and the message they brought was the same. Nuh, Ilyaas, Ibrahim, Is haaq and Idris All came with the message of peace. Musa, Dawood, Isa, Yaqub and Yusuf Were also sent with the very same stuff. All Prophets came with a mission defined To help humans become pious and kind. Against bad and evil, they were a shield And to some Prophets, books were revealed For example to Isa, Allah sent the Injeel and Tawrat to Musa Allah did reveal. The Zabur was given to Prophet Dawud and all these books, Allah had approved. After all these Prophets the last one came and to deliver the message was his only aim. He was their leader and greatest of all from amongst the Prophets he stood tall. The word of Allah, which is the Qur an, was revealed to him - this good honest man. Allah selected him and cleaned his heart and from the rest of man he was set apart. Just like Muhammad was the last and best; The Qur an is also ranked above the rest. Every word is of Allah - never to be changed. Free from error - Allah himself had arranged. After Muhammad no more Prophets will appear and the Qur an is the last and that is clear. Guidance from Allah to all of mankind and to the reality of life it does remind Tareekh Page 4.41 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 1: NECESSITY OF GOOD AKHLAQ: The Holy Prophet (S) has said: "I have been sent by Allah to teach people good manners" The above hadith shows us how important good Akhlaq (manners) is in Islam. A person once came to the Holy Prophet (S) and said that there was a woman who fasted in the mornings and spent her nights in prayers, but she was very rude and mean to her neighbours. The Holy Prophet (S) said that the old woman was not a good person at all and that she would be one of the people in hell. The above event tells us that: Your Good Deeds do NOT count for much if your Akhlaq is bad Imam Ja'far as-sadiq (A) has said that someone with good Akhlaq gets the same Thawaab as someone who fasts during daytime and prays at night. The Holy Prophet (S) and our Holy Imams (A) managed to convert a lot of people to Muslims through their good Akhlaq. Remember that when you are behaving badly out in public, people will not say look at that boy/girl behaving badly. People will say look at that Muslim behaving badly. You are therefore not only letting yourself and your parents down but also Islam. During the Ghaibah of Our 12 th Imam we all have to take care of Islam! Akhlaq Page 4.2 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 2: MANNERS IN THE IMAMBARA: Stanmore Hujjat Imambara, is not a Mosque, but an Imambara. Mosque is a place only for Salaat. Imambara is a place for Salaat and other functions. You should enter with your right foot, and remember where you are entering and act with due respect. Say: to people as you see them, do not wait for them to say it first. After removing your shoes, find a place to sit. Do not sit against the wall Sit up straight While lecture is going on, listen carefully. Do not talk during lecture, Adhan, Iqamah, Salaat or du a. Sit in such a manner that everyone around you is sitting comfortably If you do not understand the lecture, recite Salawat or Tasbih of Bibi Fatimah Zahra (A). When food (fatiha) is given out, wait to be given one and then take only one. When leaving, leave slowly being careful not to push anyone. Leaving with your left foot first. Say Fiamanillah or Khuda-hafiz, to people as you leave. Akhlaq Page 4.4 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: MANNERS IN THE IMAMBARA: Draw below things that you should NOT do in the Imambara E.g.: Running around: Akhlaq Page 4.5 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 3: MANNERS OF DRINKING: When drinking do not gulp it down at once, but sip it in three parts, starting the drinking with: and stopping the drinking with : When drinking water remember Imam Husain (A) and his family, and their thirst in Kerbala. When you finished drinking, ask Allah to send His blessings on Imam Husain (A), his family and companions, and curse on his murderers and enemies. - Try not to drink from a glass that has a crack. If you do, do not drink from the side that has the crack. - During the day drink standing up and at night drink sitting down. - Do not drink too much. Nothing is better to drink than water. All creatures of Allah drink water to survive. Allah says in the Holy Qur'an in Suratul Anbiya, Verse 30: "We made every living thing from water." Akhlaq Page 4.6 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: MANNERS OF DRINKING: In the bubbles, write the things you should remember when drinking water. Akhlaq Page 4.7 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 4: MANNERS OF TALKING: People may look at you and decide what kind of person you are by the way you are dressed, but their final and lasting feeling about you will be on what you say. Imam Husain (A) has said that: You should never begin a conversation without first saying Salaam to the person. When speaking: - Always speak what is useful, what is truthful and what is not harmful to anyone. - Never, say hurtful things or back-bite about anyone, do not even listen to others doing it. - Never, hurt anyone's feelings even jokingly. - Never, use bad language. Think before you speak, and imagine if our 12 th Imam (A) is standing next to you, would you still say what you are going to say. If you are not sure whether you should say something or not, then it is better to keep quiet. Don t say it if it s hurtful Think before you speak Always start with a greeting, e.g. Salaam, Hello (if it s not a Muslim) Akhlaq Page 4.8 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: MANNERS OF TALKING: THINK BEFORE YOU Write in the brain all the things you should think of before you open your mouth to speak. Akhlaq Page 4.9 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 5: THINK THE BEST OF OTHERS: Allah is the only judge as He sees everything and is aware of everything. We have no right to judge other people whether they are Muslims or not. Imam Zainul 'Abideen (A) said: You should think more of a person younger than you as he has had less time to do bad deeds. You should think more of a person older than you as he has had more time to do good deeds. You should think more of a person the same age as you because you do not know what he has done but you know exactly what good and bad you have done The above saying teaches us that we should always think the best of others. Prophet Ibrahim was very fond of guests. He knew how much Thawaab one gets for looking after a guest. He liked to invite travellers to his house for food and a bed to sleep in. Every morning Prophet Ibrahim stood by the main road near his house and waited for travellers to pass so that he could invite them to his house. Once it so happened that no traveller passed on that road for 3 days. This made Prophet Ibrahim very sad.. Then on the 4 th day an old man passed along that road. Prophet Ibrahim was very happy and invited the man to come to his house for some food. The old man agreed. Akhlaq Page 4.10 www.madressa.net

When they sat down to eat, Prophet Ibrahim said "Bismillah" before starting to eat but the old man did not say anything. Prophet Ibrahim asked the old man why he did not begin in the name of Allah, as it was Allah who had provided this food for them. The old man replied that he did not believe in Allah, instead he worshipped fire. Prophet Ibrahim was very angry and asked the old man to leave his house at once. As soon as the old man had gone the angel Jibrael came to Prophet Ibrahim from Allah and told him that Allah had been feeding this unbelieving old man for 70 years. Could Prophet Ibrahim not tolerate him for just one meal? Prophet Ibrahim was very sorry and ran after the old man and persuaded him to return to his house so that they may eat together. Moral: - Do not judge anyone - only Allah can do that. - Everyone has rights whether they be Muslims or non Muslims - Allah loves for you to take care of guests. Akhlaq Page 4.11 www.madressa.net

THE CRACKED POT: ALWAYS THINK THE BEST OF EVERYBODY AND EVERYTHING Once there was a water-bearer in India, who had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master s house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the water bearer delivering only one and a half pot full of water in his master s house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its actions, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own weakness, and sad that it was able to do only half of what it had been made to do. After 2 years of what the cracked pot, felt to be a failure, it spoke to the waterbearer one day by the stream. I am ashamed of myself, and I want to say sorry to you. Why? asked the bearer. What are you ashamed of? For these past two years, I have only been able to deliver half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master s house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work and you don t get full value from your efforts, the pot said. The water-bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, As we return to the master s house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path. Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure. The bearer said to the pot, Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot s side? That s because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master s table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house. We must always take each person for what they are and look for the good in them. Akhlaq Page 4.13 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 6: RESPECT FOR OTHERS: Allah says in the Holy Qur'an: "O you who believe, let not (a group of) people laugh at another (to scorn) who may be better than they are " Islam teaches us that you should respect other people and not think you are better than them as only Allah can be the judge of that. One day when the Holy Prophet (S) was sitting alone in the mosque. A man approached him. The Holy Prophet (S) immediately moved aside. The man asked the Prophet (S) why he had moved aside when there was so much room for him to seat next to the Prophet (S) as the whole mosque was empty. The Prophet (S) replied that a Muslim has a right on another Muslim that when he wants to sit near him the first should move aside as a way of respect. Next time you are at mosque saving that space for your friend and someone else wants to sit there, remember that that person has a right on you for you to move aside and make space for them. All human-beings are equal. No matter what colour you are. No matter where you are from. No matter how rich you are (how nice your clothes are). No matter if you look different (defect in your body). Each has the right of respect from the other. The Holy Prophet (S) has said: Do not despise and belittle any Muslim, because a Muslim how ever small he may be is great in the eyes of Allah." TOPIC 7: TRY AND TRY AGAIN Allah says In the Holy Qur'an: "And that there is nothing for man except what he tried, And that his efforts shall soon be seen, Then shall he be rewarded to the fullest measure" The above Ayat tells us that we will not get anything unless we try to get it. Constant effort is the key to success. If at first you do not succeed then try and try again until you do. You should never give up. And if for some reason you do not succeed even after trying again and again remember you will have earned the Thawaab for all your effort - as Allah has promised in the Holy Qur'an in the verse written above. Amir Timur was a great Mongolian king, who was well known for his bravery. He had conquered nearly half of the world known at that time. He said his success was all due to an ant, who had taught him never to give up. Once long ago before he had become such a great warrior he was fighting a battle and was losing. He decided to run away and hide himself in the mountains. Here he sat quietly, when he noticed an ant working. The ant was carrying a grain of rice much bigger than itself. With this grain the ant was trying to climb a wall. The grain fell, and the ant came down for the grain once again. Again the grain fell and again the ant went down to get it. The ant tried and tried again never giving up. The King counted that the ant tried 33 times until it finally succeeded in taking the grain up the wall. Seeing the effort that the ant put into getting what it wanted the king went about collecting his run-away soldiers and rebuilt his army. After this event with the ant the king never gave up in any battle and became a great warrior. Moral: To succeed in anything you have to try and try again. Akhlaq Page 4.16 www.madressa.net

STORY ABOUT NEVER GIVING UP: A man woke up early in order to go and pray his Fajr (Morning) prayer in the Masjid (Mosque). He got dressed, made his Wudhu and was on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, the man fell and his clothes got dirty. He got up, brushed himself off, and headed back home. At home, he changed his clothes, made his ablution, and was, again, on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, he fell again and at the same spot! He, again, got up, brushed himself off and headed home. At home he, once again, changed his clothes, made his ablution and was on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, he met a man holding a lamp. He asked the man of his identity and the man replied "I saw you fall twice on your way to the Masjid, so I brought a lamp so I can light your way." The first man thanked him profoundly and the two were on their way to the Masjid. Once at the Masjid, the first man asked the man with the lamp to come in and pray Fajr with him. The second man refused. The first man asked him a couple more times and, again, the answer was the same. The first man asked him why he did not wish to come in and pray. The man replied "I am Shaitan (Satan)." The man was shocked at this reply. Shaitan (Satan) went on to explain, "I saw you on your way to the Masjid and it was I who made you fall. When you went home, cleaned yourself and went back on your way to the Masjid, Allah forgave all of your sins. I made you fall a second time, and even that did not make you stay home, but rather, you went back on your way to the Masjid. Because of that, Allah forgave all the sins of your family. I was afraid if I made you fall one more time, then Allah will forgive the sins of the people of your village, so I made sure that you reached the Masjid safely." Moral: Do not let Shaitan (Satan) benefit from his actions. Do not put off a good that you intended to do as you never know how much reward you might receive from the hardships you encounter while trying to achieve that good. Akhlaq Page 4.18 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 8: FRIENDSHIP: Everyone needs friends, but friends are only worth having if they are true friends. Two travellers were on the road together, when a robber suddenly appeared. One man ran for a tree and climbed up and hid in the branches. The other was not as fast so threw himself onto the ground pretending to be dead. The robber came to the man on the floor, whispered something in his ear and went away. When the robber had gone the man in the tree climbed down and asked his friend what the robber had whispered in his ear. His friend replied that the robber had told him to find a better friend who would not leave him at the first sign of danger. Friends influence each other in the matter of conduct, thoughts and belief. As the Holy Prophet (S) has said: "The behaviour of everyone depends on the belief and principles of his/her friend." People will judge you according to the friends you have. Imam Ja'far as-sadiq (A) was walking in the market with his friend, who had brought his servant with him. Imam's friend turned to tell his servant something, but he had been left behind talking to someone. When the servant finally appeared, Imam's friend was very angry and shouted abuse at the servant. He also said abusive things about the servant's mother. On hearing what his friend had said Imam got very angry and told him that he should not have said such abusive things, especially about the servant's mother. The friend replied that the mother was not a Muslim. To which Imam answered that it made no difference. Imam (A) then told his friend that their friendship was no more, and walked away from him. It should not be forgotten that making friends is not enough, but it is also important to keep the friendship. Imam Ali (A) has said: "A man who has no friends is poor, but poorer than him, is he who cannot keep the friendship and loses his friend. Akhlaq Page 4.19 www.madressa.net

POEM ABOUT FRIENDSHIP: You can learn the short poem and colour in the picture I had a box of crayons, All shiny, straight and new. I lent a friend one crayon, And--oops--it broke in two! That s ok, we are friends and we share everything Akhlaq Page 4.21 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 9: TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE: For any community to survive and go forward in this world, the people of that community have to have knowledge. To gain knowledge is not only to learn like a parrot, but to understand and act upon what you have learnt. Then to teach it to others, so they may benefit from it as well. The Holy Prophet (S) has said that every Muslim man and woman must gain knowledge. Once when the Holy Prophet (S) entered the Mosque there were two groups of people sitting there. One of the groups was busy praying while the other group were discussing religious topics. The Holy Prophet (S) was very pleased and said that both the groups were doing something good but he preferred the group that was busy discussing. Saying that, he went and joined that group. The above incident does not mean that prayer is not important, as the Holy Prophet (S) was pleased with both groups. The group that were Praying, were offering Mustahab prayers not Wajib. The knowledge that we have to gain should be religious and academic. It is possible to do both, as Allah has made us He knows what we are capable of. If your knowledge in religion increases you will became closer to Allah because you will understand a lot more of what you are doing and why. We are told that if two people are offering the same prayer, one with understanding and the other without; then the one with understanding will get more Thawaab. On the day of Qiyamat if you are questioned about something wrong that you had done in your life, you will not be able to say you did not know! You have no excuse. There are so many books you can read, and so many people you can ask. Akhlaq Page 4.22 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 10: PRACTISE WHAT YOU PREACH: Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, "What! Do you enjoin others to do good deeds, and forget your own selves?" In the above Ayat we are warned about telling others to do good while we ourselves do not. People will not listen to you telling them to do something when you yourself do not do it. In fact you have no right to tell someone to do or not to do something unless you yourself are doing it. Imagine if our Prophets or Imams taught us all about Islam and what Allah likes us to do and not to do yet they themselves did none of these things, would anyone have listened and followed them? No! Of course not. The best method to teach people what is right and wrong is by your actions first, then your speech. This is one of the reasons why our Holy Prophet (S) spent 40 years of his life living with the people showing them how to act before announcing his Prophet hood. Once a man was listening to an Alim reciting a Majlis in which the Alim said that the power of "Bismillah" was so great that if a person truly believed then he could walk on water. That evening when the man was going home (on the other side of the river) he decided that he would try what the Alim had recited. So with full belief in the Power of Allah he said "Bismillah" and stepped on the water. He was able to walk on the water because of the faith that he had in Allah. The next day, the man went to the Alim and invited him to his house for dinner, to thank him for teaching him the power of "Bismillah". The Alim accepted. The two of them set of to the man's home. When they reached the river the man said "Bismillah" and began walking on the water, expecting the Alim to do the same, as he was the one who had taught him. The Alim just stood at the edge of the water, not daring to step into it. He did not truly believe in the power that he had preached so much about. He could not practise what he had preached. So think before you tell your friends, or younger brother / sister what to do or not to do. Do you do it yourself? Akhlaq Page 4.24 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: PRACTISE WHAT YOU PREACH What had the Alim taught the man about the power of (I begin) in the name of Allah, the most Kind and the most Merciful. What happened when the man stepped onto the water after saying Bismillah? Why could the Alim not follow the man across the water? Write about a time when you have told someone to do something when you yourself did not do it. (You did NOT practise what you preached). Akhlaq Page 4.25 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 11: TO ASK FOR FORGIVENESS: Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, ". Do not despair of the mercy of Allah; indeed Allah forgives all sins. Indeed He is oft-forgiving, most merciful." In the above Ayat we are told never give up hope, as Allah will forgive us, as He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful. This does not mean that we commit a sin, ask for forgiveness then commit that same sin again and again each time asking for forgiveness and expecting to be forgiven. Allah will forgive us but only if we are truly sorry Our 5 th Imam, Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (A) has said that one who leaves sinning totally and asks for forgiveness, is like one, who has not committed any sin at all. However, one who, continues to commit sins and at the same time prays for forgiveness is like one who jokes. We are often told to do "Taubah" for our sins. Taubah = return - return from past sins and following the path of truthfulness in future. When doing Taubah you should: - Truly regret your sin. - Sincerely apologise and show a feeling of shame for the sin that you have committed. - Promise never to do it again and obey all the commands of Allah. - Ask for Allah's Mercy, as He is the Most Merciful. We are told that we should always pray to Allah that on the Day of Judgement He should judge us with His Mercy and not with His Justice. Once there was a man who was a very pious man and so sure that he had led a good life that he used to pray to Allah that he should be judged with His Justice and not with His Mercy. One night that man had a dream that it was the day of Judgement and there in front of him was a scale with all his good deeds on one side and on the other side was an apple. Akhlaq Page 4.26 www.madressa.net

What amazed the man was that the side with the apple was so much heavier than the side with all the good deeds. When the man asked why there was an apple there he was told that once he had gone to the shops and tasted an apple to see how sweet it was intending to buy it if it was to his liking, but he had not asked the permission of the shop owner. As that man had asked Allah to judge him with His Justice that one small apple outweighed all his good deeds. Remember Allah is All-Merciful and All-Forgiving so always ask Him to forgive you but be sincere. O Allah please forgive our sins and we promise to do only those things that make You happy Akhlaq Page 4.27 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 12: TO FORGIVE OTHERS: Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, ".If you forgive, overlook and cover up (their faults), then indeed Allah is oft-forgiving, merciful." The above Ayat tells us that if we forgive, and not just forgive but also hide others people s faults then Allah will do the same for us and remember Allah is the Most Forgiving. To forgive someone is to let someone of the hook, to pardon someone for their mistake towards you. Allah not only tells us to forgive but also overlook - let things pass: And to cover up - not to tell others what that person had done. Our 1 st Imam, Imam Ali (A) has said that at times when you can have revenge on someone, when you have the power to pay back and then you forgive that is called true forgiving. The above Hadith tells us that it is truly forgiving when you have the means to get revenge for what that person had done and you do not use these means but instead forgive. To forgive someone means then you forget about it, and not to remind the person of it, nor to tell anyone else of it. Imam Ali (A) has said "Punish your enemies with kindness and do them a good deed in return for the harm that they have done to you. Akhlaq Page 4.29 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 13: MANNERS OF TRAVELLING: One of the many blessings of Allah to Prophet Sulaiman was that he had control over the wind. He would sit on his carpet and command the wind to take him wherever he wanted to go Once when Prophet Sulaiman on his carpet was floating through the air being carried by the wind, a pious man saw him and said "Glory be to He, who has subjected this to Sulaiman." Allah liked this praise so much that he sent an angel to Prophet Sulaiman telling him that a certain person had praised Him in such a beautiful manner and pleased Him greatly. Prophet Sulaiman turned back and went to the man to ask him what he had said, and the man told him. Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, ".Glory be to Him who subjected these to us, because we were not able to do so ourselves." The above Ayat tells us that Glory belongs to Him who has allowed for us to have power over certain things and without this blessing we would not be able to. This is why it is recommended to say this Ayat before travelling, as it is due to the blessings of Allah that we have such wonderful means of travel. Other things recommended to do before travelling are: - Take out Sadqa - Walk under the Qur'an as you are leaving you house. - Carry ½ of Sura Ikhlas, with the other half left at home (We are told that these two halves will come together again). - Recite the above ayat from the Holy Qur'an When we go on a journey, we usually take with us something called Imam Zaamin which is some money tied in a cloth. This tradition probably started during the time of our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar- Ridha (A), when people wanted to carry the coins because it had the Imam s name on it. Akhlaq Page 4.31 www.madressa.net

A STORY ABOUT IMAM ALI AR_RIDHA (A) IMAM ZAAMIN: The king at the time of our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) was Mamoon Rashid son of Haroon Rashid. Mamoon Rashid had forced Imam Ar Ridha (A) to take the position of his heir apparent (i.e. Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) was supposed to take over as king after Mamoon Rashid); because Mamoon wanted to be accepted by the Shias. Although Imam (A) did not want to take this position, he said yes and then made full use of it to preach Islam openly. To show to the people how much he thought of Imam (A), Mamoon Rashid had new coins made with Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) s name on it. EACH IMAM (A) IS REMEMBERED FOR A SPECIFIC THING: E.G.: - We remember and ask our 4 th Imam (A) to pray on our behalf when we are ill. - We remember and ask our 6 th Imam (A) to pray on our behalf for our daily requirements. - And in the same way, we ask our 8 th Imam (A) to pray that our journey is goes well and that we return safely to our homes. Our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) is also called as Imam-e-Zaamin. When Muslims go on journeys they take with them something called Imam-e- Zaamin (A). Zaamin means "The Guarantor". One day, when Imam Ar Ridha (A) was on a journey, from Madina to Marw), while in a jungle, he came across a hunter, who was about to kill a deer. The deer was trying to get away and when she saw Imam Ar Ridha (A), she said something to him. Our 8 th Imam (A) asked the hunter to free the deer so that she could go and feed her little baby deers who were very hungry. Imam (A) also told the hunter that once the deer had fed her babies she would come back. The hunter allowed the deer to go because Imam (A) had told him to, but he did not think the deer will come back. Imam (A) waited with the hunter until the deer returned with her young ones. The hunter was amazed on witnessing this miraculous event and he set the deer free as a mark of respect for Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A). It was after this historical event that our 8 th Imam (A) became known as Imam-e-Zaamin (A) Akhlaq Page 4.32 www.madressa.net
