Pastor s Notes Well, the hammock works pretty well! I m deeply grateful for the vacation time I had in July, seeing family and friends, getting to Ravinia, using a Kayak and using the hammock! I hope you have had or will have some vacation time also. Fr. Bill Killeen, Kate DeVires, Clara Jurivich, Jane Bandyk and Terri Simeoni will also be getting some time off now. It is an exciting time coming up. We are moving ahead with our Capital Projects, both for the parish and for our sharing parishes, St. Agatha and Ascension/St. Susana. We ll be looking for architects and contractors, meeting to plan our sequence of projects. We ll be making deposits for Ascension and St. Agatha to begin to draw on for their needs. God bless all of you who are willing and able to participate in the Capital Campaign. This September we will formally begin our restructuring of our Parish Pastoral Council into a Commission based council, with ministries and organizations gathering in Education, Human Concerns, Parish Life, Spiritual Life clusters for improved communications, representation and efficiency. These, in turn, with send representatives to the Parish Council itself, which will be the umbrella organization for the Commissions. And there have already been initial meetings to look at our celebration of the 125 th Anniversary of our Parish, remembering those who have gone before us, passing on to us this great treasure of spiritual and social energy. Holding and living this treasure these days, we will also envision the time to come as best we can, reflecting and celebrating being the church in the world today and tomorrow. Speaking of the past, present and future, You may have read that our own Fr. Bob Bacchi will be retiring after many years of rich, substantive and self sacrificing ministry to the church of Chicago, 12 years of which have been here with us at St. Francis. We are looking at the next few weeks for the best opportunity to say thanks to Bob and wish him a good retirement. We ll have the chance to do something similar for Fr. Bill Stenzel, the previous pastor here at St. Francis from 1991 to 2005. His exceptional talent and great energy gathered many in the parish to help it flourish, with the number of parishioners, students in the day school and the school of religion dramatically increasing. Together with many folks, he is responsible for the breath taking renovation of the church. (Did you know that during that renovation they actually considered a Gathering Space between the church and the education building? Well, you can t do everything at once.) Fr. Bill has retired and he will be able to come here on August 16 to celebrate the 5 pm mass and stick around after mass to say hello. Retiring, starting or continuing, we are God s people, gathered as a family of faith, being church and living church in our world. There are reasons why folks have a hard time with English: The bandage was wound around the wound. Or, They were too close to the door to close it. Enjoy the great month of August. Scripture Reflection Most parishes are now aware of the catechumenate and the journey of new faithful in the RCIA, but this form of sacramental initiation disappeared from view in the thirteenth century along with many other ancient practices. Life back then was hard, and often too short, and priests were increasingly insistent about the responsibility of parents to baptize children in danger of death. Since everyone in that society was under unimaginable threat from famine, warfare, and plague, the liturgical rites changed quickly. Everyone was in danger of death all the time. No longer were babies immersed in fonts, being lowered into the water, although the ritual books never backed down from immersion. Infusion was the new way, a simple pouring of a few drops of water on the child s forehead. The catechumenate collapsed, being reduced to the recitation of the Creed and an Our Father at every baptism. Amazingly, any provision for adult baptism was shelved, so that as late as the 1950s, a person being baptized was presumed to be an infant, unable to answer for him or herself. Questions of creed and commitment were put to the godparents, not to the person being baptized. Even Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton, famous adult converts, remained mute at their baptisms while their sponsors answered for them. In hindsight all this appears strikingly odd, yet it was accepted as the way things were. We have good reason to give thanks for the vigorous reforms of the last fifty years! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

TAIZÉ PRAYER St. Francis Xavier and Grace Lutheran All are invited to our Taizé Evening Prayer Friday, August 8 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Taizé Prayer is contemplative and most importantly communal, combining simple repetitive melodies that are sung by all, prayerful silence, scripture reading and intercessory prayer. This prayer can promote a kind to inner unity of person, allowing the spirit to be more open and attentive to what is essential. It is our hope that you will join us, especially at this time when our world is much in need of prayer. Upcoming Holy Day Mass August 15 Holy Day of Obligation The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary *Friday, August 15 *Masses: 7:45 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. **Cantorei will minister with the sung prayer at this Mass. **Cantorei is a small choir made up of singers that are members of the SFX Cantor Ministry. The coffee sold at St. Francis Xavier is purchased from Equal Exchange Fairly Traded. There is alot behind this coffee. We work closely with our farmer partners, year after year, to better understand each other s needs. The result is a trusting relationship and delicious coffee. Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Manager Fair Trade builds right relationships between buyers and sellers that are rooted in the principles of human dignity and solidarity. Fair Trade: Respects human dignity Promotes the common good Advances economic justice Empowers disadvantaged people Connects us with the people who create the things we buy Cultivates global solidarity The Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Program creates opportunities for us to bring these core values of our faith to bear on the choices we make as consumers choices that have the power to lift our brothers and sisters out of poverty. Effort is made to see that these coffee farmers are given a fair wage!!! Lost and Found The Lost and Found cabinet located outside the church restroom is emptied each month. Leave A Legacy We are grateful for the generous support that you give to St. Francis through your weekly contributions. Best of Luck SFX Class of 2010! We are so proud of the SFX Class of 2010! The above picture was taken at an alumni event earlier this summer. It was wonderful to welcome back so many students and to hear all about their exciting plans for the fall. We have no doubt that each and every member of this class will go on to accomplish extraordinary things! We are thrilled to extend congratulations to two of our students for taking top honors at Nazareth Academy. Kiley Roache, heading to Stanford University, was named Valedictorian and Kevin Saladino, heading to Vanderbuilt University, was named Salutatorian. What tremendous accomplishments! Keely Kriho, an LTHS graduate and Valedictorian of the SFX class of 2010, is undertaking a fantastic adventure of her own. She has been awarded UNC Chapel Hill's Global Gap Year Fellowship and will be participating in their program Carpe Diem Education for the South America Semester which takes place in Ecuador and Peru. Keely will be learning Spanish, living with host families, volunteering with community development projects, agriculture, and conservation, and getting to travel and explore these countries. Her second semester will be spent working in medical clinics which align perfectly with her pre med track when she begins her studies at UNC. Keely proudly shares how her days at St. Francis Xavier helped develop her passion for service. SFX definitely emphasizes the benefits and necessity of service, and a lot of my high school activities were based in volunteering because of this early introduction to service. Right when I decided that I wanted to do a gap year, these experiences made me realize that I wanted to spend a huge portion of my gap year focused on getting a deeper understanding of global issues and then using this knowledge to perform directed service. The Fellowship I received requires a minimum of six months spent volunteering for international service projects, so it perfectly correlates with my original goal while giving me the means to achieve it. I'm really grateful that service has always been a part of my life, definitely thanks in part to SFX, and that I now have the ability to volunteer for the next year! Class of 2010 and all SFX alumni make sure you stay in touch and let us know how you re doing! Drop a line at jcourier@sfxlg.org and we ll publish it in our next Alumni newsletter. SFX Alumni Go Set the World on Fire!

QUEST Great America Days We are looking for Quest leaders for the 2014 2015 school year. If you have a teen participating in Quest this upcoming year, please consider offering your time and talents to this program. If you have any questions, please contact Emily Brabham by phone at 708 352 0168 x304 or email ebrabham@sfxlg.org. The Archdiocese of Chicago, Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry will sponsor the annual Youth Ministry Great America Days 2014 on Tuesday, August 5. The price of the ticket for one day is $32.00. Tickets are non refundable. Please call the Rectory Office at 708 352 0168 if you are interested in purchasing tickets. Are You Registered as Parishioners? Do We Have a Record of Your Children? We invite all to register as parishioners. If you are not receiving periodic mailings from the parish, you are not in our database. A registration form can be picked up at the back of the Church or printed out from our website, www.sfx lg.org. To help with our planning, we also ask that you let us know about your children, so that they can also be included in the database. Sometimes children are baptized elsewhere or families move into the parish after their children have been baptized. Consequently, we don t know about them until it is time to register for the Day School or for Religious Education. Again, the registration form available at the back of the Church or on the website can be used for this purpose. Thank you for helping us keep our information as up to date as possible! Bringing Children To Church Few things are more important than bringing children to church for our Eucharistic celebration. God bless all of you who do this. It is the best way for them to learn and experience our gathering as a community, our prayer of thanksgiving and our being sent to do God s work in the world. It certainly brings joy to my life when you bring your children with you. Of course, I understand if you have to take your child out into the vestibule for any reason. Sometimes they get anxious and just need to get up and move around and that s just fine. The Eucharist is a profoundly sophisticated ritual which takes time and patience to assimilate and integrate into our lives. Look at how it has deepened over time in our own lives as adults! The fact that you parents are able to get everybody up and moving in the same direction at the same time astounds me and I am sure that it pleases God! Keep coming back! Fr. John
