This is not the first time and it is often a political move where lower castes choose Buddhism because it gives them more honor and takes away some of the stigma the caste system imposes. Those who became Buddhist in this instance were the Dalits (the lowest caste, also known as the "Untouchables"). Of the 238 Buddhist people groups, 59 are found in India. There are many Buddhists there, even though they are not prominent when compared to the great majority which are Hindus. A young girl walks through Mumbai's Dharavi slum, home to about a million people. Many Indians live in modern suburbs and work in gleaming skyscrapers, but many more-a large majority-remain impoverished and trapped by tradition. "Our prayer must not be self-centered. Secondly, it may appeal to those who are tired of the multiple demands they feel from the multiple gods in their lives. But it is emptiness without the living God, without really knowing Him, because they are trying to fill a void that only God can fill.
