2 Message from the Pastor I am just returning from a trip to Providence, Rhode Island. Many of you know that I have been planning to attend my reunion. Also, several of you know that I am a reunion person. I always hold dear to my heart people who have been a significant part of my life. I look forward to the 5 years rituals of reunions, high school, college, or divinity school. So, with a lot of enthusiasm and energy, I spent the Memorial Day weekend trying to reconnect to my years at Brown University, to the community I was a part of at a special time in my life. It always takes a moment to focus when you see someone you haven t seen in several years, especially when you became acquainted in your younger days. Sometimes there is the initial shock of saying to yourself that you cannot have possibly been in school with that person-they must be much older than I am! But then you settle into the fun of catching up with what s happened in people s lives and reminiscing about the years you spent together as young adult students. I have managed to retain friendships with a few people from each stage of my life. We keep in contact occasionally, but what a joy to actually spend time together. And there are the other classmates that you are happy to see every so often, just for an update on their journeys in life. As I thought of writing my article for The Light to our SCC family, I couldn t help but reflect on the many people who become parts of our lives, who have touched and shaped our lives, who have helped to make us who we are. I often regret the friendships that I have let falter and fade, but I know that God brought us together for some purpose and that I am who I am because of the blessings of knowing others. Being together, even if only at the occasional reunion, is a wonderful reminder of how the communities we belong to teach us and enrich our lives, sometimes for joy and sometimes for struggle. I have also thought, since my reunion, of the legacy of people that have called the Solon Community Church home. The people who built the worship, social, and educational spaces and, even more so, who infused this place with its spiritual foundation and stick toit-ness, who would not miss a Sunday morning or other church event any more than I would want to miss a class reunion. We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.. My prayer is that our current SCC family will feel the same privilege of being part of this church s legacy for future generations. I pray that we will look around us and see the many people that God has put into our lives and, thus, made us who we are, even if we sometimes forget. Perhaps (or certainly) I enjoy my class reunions because they allow me to be in touch with the people and places that I have been blessed to know, to remember the good old days and to take stock of where I am in my relationships today. One thing I do know is that relationships make us who we are. The church is a special kind of relationship, a community of people who share beliefs to some extent and who exchange visions for a better world, who care for each other in times of joy and struggle. My college alumni peers are one community that I nurture as best I can. The same is true for my church community. There really is nothing like it or that can take its place. I hope that we treasure and nurture this relationship of church community as much as I do my reunion gatherings, for this is who we say we are and are called to be. Blessings, Rev. Wood
