Spreading A Love for God and His Glory November 20, 2016 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Revelation 19:1,2,5 Leader: Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgments are true and just. All: Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great. *SPECIAL MUSIC: Let All Things Now Living - Choir *COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING - Hymn #457 Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of God's unchanging love Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I've come and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood continued above - 2 - *Indicates when to stand.

*COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING continued Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love here's my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above *PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Call to Worship Worship begins with God who invites us and welcomes us into his presence. Because of Christ, we can approach God with boldness even though we are sinful and weak. - 3 -

*THOU LOVELY SOURCE OF TRUE DELIGHT Thou lovely source of true delight whom I unseen adore; unveil thy beauties to my sight that I might love thee more, Oh that I might love thee more. Thy glory o er creation shines but in thy sacred word I read, in fairer, brighter lines, my bleeding dying Lord, see my bleeding, dying Lord. Tis here, whene er my comforts droop and sin and sorrow rise, thy love with cheering beams of hope my fainting heart supplies, Oh, my fainting heart s supplied. But ah! too soon the pleasing scene is clouded o er with pain. My gloomy fears rise dark between and I again complain, Oh, and I again complain. (Interlude) Jesus, my Lord, my life, my light, Oh come with blissful ray; break radiant through the shades of night and chase my fears away, won t you chase my fears away. Then shall my soul with rapture trace the wonders of thy love; but the full glories of thy face are only known above, they are only known above. - 4 -

COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Mark 7:15, 20-23 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person. All: Our Father, we are sinful and you are holy. Where we thought we were holy, we are in truth unholy and defiled. Out of our hearts come love of this world; our minds are dark and are assailed by doubts; our wills are too often given to selfishness and our bodies to laziness and unrighteousness. By sinning against our neighbors, we have also sinned against you, in whose image they were created. We thirst for your cleansing, O God. Forgive us, renew and transform us; take away our defilement through Jesus your Son in whose name we pray. Amen. Call to Confession We all sin daily, in thought and word and deed. As we come into God s presence, we acknowledge how we have rebelled against our King and seek his forgiveness. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Revelation 21:6-7 And he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. - 5 -

Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. Sermon Series: Ephesians Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. The Fragrance of Life in Christ - Ephesians 4:25-5:2 (ESV) 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. - 7 -

Sermon Questions for Further Reflection 1. This section of Paul s letter is the unfolding of what he had just written about putting of the old self and putting on the new self in Jesus. How would you respond to someone that says Christianity is too passive or that it is too otherworldly? 2. When is anger not sinful? What can help us not deceive ourselves into thinking that our anger is righteous? 3. The sun not going down on our anger is not to be understood woodenly. What is the principle involved here? 4. Consider: Anger and falsehood together are a double-edged evil, and work together to perturb the reason. And when the soul is continually perturbed, the Lords withdraws from it and the Devil rules it. 1st century Rabbinic writing 5. What grieves or distresses the Holy Spirit? What demonstrates the new life of the Spirit? Sermon God addresses and speaks to us by the reading and preaching of his Word. Both Christians and non-christians need to hear the good news of salvation and grow in it. 6. Eph 1:13 speaks of our having been sealed by the Spirit at conversion and here we see the bookend of that sealing for glory. How does this sealing by the Spirit encourage us to live differently? 7. Bitterness is a killer of harmony and life in Christ. What does Paul say here that helps us keep this in check? How can you live in such a way that promotes kindness? 8. Would you consider yourself to be a fragrance of life right now? If so, how will you maintain this? If not, how are going to get there? - 9 -

*10,000 REASONS (BLESS THE LORD ) The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning, it's time to sing your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes. (Chorus) Bless the Lord, O my soul; O my soul, worship his holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I'll worship your holy name. The Lord s Supper The gospel is not only heard, but visibly seen as God invites us to commune with him at his table. In the Lord s Supper we remember and experience Jesus saving work. You're rich in love and you're slow to anger. Your name is great and your heart is kind. For all your goodness I will keep on singing; Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. (Chorus) And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come; still my soul will sing your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore! (Chorus 2x) I ll worship your holy name; I ll worship your holy name. *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to our Lord God. All: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Leader: It is indeed good, right, and our delight that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto You, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. - 10 -

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION *BLESSED ASSURANCE - Hymn #693 Blessed assurance; Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. (Chorus) This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Chorus) Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest; watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. (Chorus 2x) Benediction Just as worship begins with God s call, it ends with God sending us into the world with his word of grace. We go forth to live and serve by the power of his grace, not our own strength. *BENEDICTION Leaders & Staff Senior Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. & Associate Pastor Taylor Clark Staff: Kristin Bay, Hanni Hanson, Carlynn Stahlberg, Kelly Brown, Sara Motley (Nursery) Elders: Grady Bennett, Tom Jentz, Don Olmsted, Matt Riley, Micah Tinkham, Steve Thompson, Deacons: Terry Falk, Micah Hill, Mike Stahlberg, Bruce Tulloch To be added to church enews, and prayer lists, please contact us at office@faithcov.com.
