REVIVAL A Study guide for Leaders in the Body of Christ BY TIMOTHY II Copyright 2007 By Timothy II Web Site: www.timothy2.org

1 REVIVAL INTRODUCTION: The term Revival often means different things to different Christian Groups throughout the world. I believe however, that most Christians would agree that the term Revival actually means a move of God that causes the people within the Body of Christ to become Revived. The results of a Revival may also cause an Evangelistic movement outside the Churches that will bring new souls to the Lord Jesus Christ. Another term used for Revival is an Awakening. (Romans 13:11-14 1 Corinthians 15:34 Ephesians 5:14) Regardless of which term you use for a Revival, the most important thing to remember is that the Body of Christ is presently in dire need of one, and now is the time to Ask for this move from God. In order to Ask God for a Revival, we do so through prayer, and the prayer should be done corporately (in Groups) and also individually. In order to further understand the meaning of Revival, it is important to review the meaning of the word in the English Dictionary and the meaning of the word in the Bible in Hebrew and in Greek. I. THE MEANING OF REVIVAL: The following is the meaning of the word Revival in the Dictionary: In English: re viv al: 1. The act or an instance of reviving. 2. The condition of being revived. 3. A restoration to use, acceptance, activity, or vigor after a period of obscurity or quiescence (which means to be quiet, still, at rest or inactive). 4. A time of reawakened interest in religion. 5. A meeting or series of meetings for the purpose of reawakening religious faith, often characterized by impassioned preaching and public testimony. The following is the meaning of the word Revival in the Bible: In Hebrew: 2421 chayah (khaw-yaw'); a primitive root [compare 2331, 2421]; to live, whether literally or figuratively; causatively, to revive: KJV-- keep (leave, make) alive, X certainly, give (promise) life, (let, suffer to) live, nourish up, preserve (alive), quicken, recover, repair, restore (to life), revive, (X God) save (alive, life, lives), X surely, be whole. The following is the meaning of the word Revival in the Bible: In Greek: 2198 zao (dzah'-o); a primary verb; to live (literally or figuratively): KJV-- life (-time), (a-) live (-ly), quick.

2 330 anathallo (an-ath-al'-lo); from 303 and thallo (to flourish); to revive: KJV-- flourish again. 326 anazao (an-ad-zah'-o) from 303 and 2198; to recover life (literally or figuratively): KJV-- (be a-) live again, revive. II. ASKING FOR REVIVAL: When the people of God greatly desire a Revival, they need to Ask God for it. This can be accomplished by following the plan that God has laid out for us. 2 Chr 7:14-16 14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. Here in the Psalms, the people Ask God to Revive them so that they will not backslide from Him again and instead will call upon His Name. Ps 80:18 18 So will not we go back (backslide) from thee: quicken us (Revive us), and we will call upon thy name. Here the people Ask God to Revive them again so that they may rejoice in the Lord. Ps 85:1-3 1 LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back (brought home again, delivered again, pulled in again, restored, or caused to turn) the captivity of Jacob. 2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah. 3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned (brought back, brought home again, delivered again, pulled in again, restored, or caused to turn) thyself from the fierceness of thine anger. Ps 85:5-9 5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? 6 Wilt thou not revive us again (make us to live, make alive, give us life, nourish us up, repair us, and restore us again): that thy people may rejoice in thee? 7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. 8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again (be brought back again, be delivered again, be pulled in again) to folly. 9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him (Fear the Lord); that glory may dwell in our land. When we hear the words of the Lord, then we will Fear the Lord which means to hate evil and depart from it. (Psalms 97:10 Proverbs 3:7, 8:13, 16:6, 16:17) Then we can Ask the Lord to Revive us in the midst of our years.

3 Hab 3:2 2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid (have the Fear of the Lord): O LORD, revive (make to live, make alive, give life to, nourish up, repair, and restore again) thy (your) work in the midst of the years (in our time), in the midst of the years (in our time) make known; in wrath remember mercy. Even though it is essential to Ask God for Revival through corporate prayer (in groups), we still need to Ask God to Revive us individually The following are examples of individual prayer to God for our personal Revival. Ps 119:25 25 My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken (Revive) thou me according to thy word. Ps 119:107 107 I am afflicted very much: quicken (Revive) me, O LORD, according unto thy word. Ps 119:154 154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken (Revive) me according to thy word. Ps 119:40 40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken (Revive) me in thy righteousness. Ps 119:88 88 Quicken (Revive) me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth. Ps 119:159 159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken (Revive) me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness. Ps 119:149 149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken (Revive) me according to thy judgment. Ps 119:156 156 Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken (Revive) me according to thy judgments. Ps 143:11 11 Quicken (Revive) me, O LORD, for thy name's sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble. III. BELIEVING FOR REVIVAL: Once we have Asked for Revival, we need to Believe that it will happen! In the following Scriptures, David asks God not to forsake him even when he gets old. Even though he had seen great troubles, he knew and Believed that God would Revive him again. Ps 71:18-20 18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power (might) to every one that is to come. 19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee! 20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken (Revive) me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth. Even when we too are walking in the midst of trouble, we need to Believe that the Lord will Revive us and the Lord will perfect (complete) that which concerns us.

4 Ps 138:7-8 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive (make me to live, make alive, give me life, nourish me up, repair me, and restore me again) me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. 8 The LORD will perfect (complete) that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. Here the Lord states that He will Revive the spirit of the humble (those that are depressed and lowly) and the heart of the contrite ones (those that are bruised or broken in pieces). Isa 57:15-16 15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive (make to live, make alive, give life, nourish up, repair, and restore again) the spirit of the humble (depressed and lowly), and to revive (make to live, make alive, give life, nourish up, repair, and restore again) the heart of the contrite (bruised or broken in pieces) ones. 16 For I will not contend (strive, rebuke, or plead) for ever, neither will I be always wroth (angry): for the spirit (of man then might) should fail (or be overwhelmed) before me, and the souls which I have made. In the parable of the 'Prodigal Son', the wayward son is said to have been lost but then he was Revived. Luke 15:24 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again (Revived); he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Our example of a true Revival is Jesus Christ Himself. He died, rose again and came back to life (was Revived). Rom 14:9 9 For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living (Revived). IV. REPENTANCE: In order for Revival to take place we need to Repent, and in order to Repent we must first Turn or Return from our wicked ways. The word Turn is the same word as Return. TO TURN OR RETURN: In Hebrew, to Turn or Return means to bring back, bring home again, deliver again, pull in again, restore, or to cause to turn. 7725 shuwb (shoob); a primitive root; to turn back (hence, away), literally or figuratively (not necessarily with the idea of to return to the starting point); generally to retreat; often adverbial, again: The following Scriptures reveal that it is not us that actually causes the Turning but we are to Ask God and it is He that will Turn us!

5 Jer 31:18 18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised (corrected, punished, instructed) me, and I was chastised (corrected, punished, instructed), as a bullock (bull) unaccustomed to the yoke: turn (bring back, bring home again, deliver again, pull in again, restore, or cause to turn) thou me, and I shall be turned (brought back, brought home again, delivered again, pulled in again, restored, or caused to turn); for thou art the LORD my God. Ps 80:19 19 Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. Ps 85:4 4 Turn us (bring us back, bring us home again, deliver us again, pull us in again, restore us, or cause us to turn), O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. O Christians, Return unto the Lord! Hosea 14:1-3 1 O Israel (Christians), return (be brought back, be brought home again, be delivered again, be pulled in again, be restored) unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity (perversity, moral evil, sin). 2 Take with you words, and turn (bring yourself back, bring yourself home again, deliver yourself again, pull in yourself again, restore yourself) to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves (fruit) of our lips. 3 Asshur (this country) shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. The Lord promises us that if we will Return unto Him He will heal our backsliding and will love us freely. Hosea 14:4 4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. When we Return to the Lord, He will heal us and He will Revive us. Hosea 6:1-2 1 Come, and let us return (be brought back, brought home again, delivered again, pulled in again, restored, or caused to turn) unto the LORD: for he hath torn (in pieces), and he will heal us (mend and make us whole); he hath smitten (wounded us), and he will bind us up (wrap us firmly with compresses). 2 After two days (in a short time) will he revive us (make us to live, make alive, give us life, nourish us up, repair us, and restore us again): in the third day (like Jesus) he will raise (lift) us up, and we shall live in his sight. Hosea 14:7 7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive (be made to live, made alive, be given life, be nourished up, be repaired, and restored again) as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon. Hosea 14:9 9 Who is wise (hearted), and he shall understand these things? prudent (able to discern or perceive), and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein. TO REPENT:

In Hebrew, to Repent means to sigh, to feel remorse, to be sorry, to regret, and to think differently. The following Scripture reveals that after God Turns us, then we are to Repent. Then after we Repent, we can be instructed (taught or receive understanding). 6 Jer 31:19 19 Surely after that I was turned (brought back, brought home again, delivered again, pulled in again, restored, or caused to turn), I repented (to sigh, to feel remorse, to be sorry, to regret, to think differently); and after that I was instructed (taught or received understanding), I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded (confused), because I did bear the reproach of my youth. (Ecclesiastes 11:9-10 1 Timothy 4:12) There are those in the Body of Christ that oppose themselves and may not even know it. We need to intercede in prayer for them and Ask God that He might give them Repentance to the acknowledging (recognition and full discernment) of the Truth, so that they may recover themselves out of the snare (trap, trick or temptation) of the Devil. 2 Tim 2:24-26 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure (perhaps) will give them repentance to the acknowledging (recognition and full discernment) of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves (regain one's senses) out of the snare (trap, trick or temptation) of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. WHAT TO PRAY TO REPENT: The following is a prayer of David that clearly speaks for us the words of Repentance. We need to acknowledge this type of prayer to God in order for us to be completely Forgiven! It is important not only to repeat this prayer aloud, but to mean it with all our heart, mind and soul. Ps 51:10-12 10 Create in me a clean (pure) heart, O God; and renew a right (stable or steadfast) spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore (bring back, bring home again, deliver again, pull in again, restore, or cause to turn) unto me the joy of thy salvation (Isaiah 12:2-3); and uphold (take hold of me or sustain) me with thy free spirit (Spirit of Liberty - 2 Corinthians 3:17 Galatians 5:1, 13). THE RESULTS: Once we have prayed the prayer of David and Repented, the results will be: Ps 51:13 13 Then will I teach transgressors (trespassers, or rebels) thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. THE GOOD NEWS: The Good News is that once we help convert (or return) a brother/sister that is in error, we can help save a soul from death and the Lord shall hide (cover) all his/her sins. (1 Peter 4:8) James 5:19-20 19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert (help return) him;

20 Let him know, that he which converteth (help return) the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide (cover) a multitude of sins. 7 V. PREACHING FOR REVIVAL: When Preaching for Revival, the Preaching will be ineffective and the people that hear it will not retain it, unless the Preaching is in demonstration (or manifestation) of the Spirit and of (dunamis) power. The following is the meaning of dunamis Power in the Greek. 1411 dunamis (doo'-nam-is); from 1410; force (literally or figuratively); specially, miraculous power (usually by implication, a miracle itself): KJV-- ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work. Paul said he did not Preach the Gospel with wisdom of words, least it would make the Cross of Christ of no effect (empty or in vain). The Preaching of the Cross is to those of us that are Saved the dunamis Power of God. 1 Cor 1:17-18 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect (empty or in vain). 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power (dunamis) of God. To those of us that are Called (as Saints), Christ is the dunamis Power of God and the Wisdom of God. 1 Cor 1:24 24 But unto them which are called (as Saints), both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power (dunamis) of God, and the wisdom of God. To keep our Preaching in perspective, we need to remember that it pleased God to use the foolishness of Preaching to Save those that Believe. It is not through anything that we say or do of our own power or wisdom! 1 Cor 1:21 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. We should also notice that the Bible tells us that those of us that God has Called are not very wise according to man s standards, neither are many that are Called mighty or noble. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound (dishonor, disgrace or put to shame) the wise and the things that are mighty. He has also chosen the base (common, not noble) and the least esteemed things of the world and the things that are nothing to make void the things that are, so that no flesh should glory in His Presence. 1 Cor 1:26-29 26 For ye see (consider) your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

8 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound (dishonor, disgrace or put to shame) the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound (dishonor, disgrace or put to shame) the things which are mighty; 28 And base (common, not noble) things of the world, and things which are despised (least esteemed), hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not (nothing), to bring to nought (make void) things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. Paul stated that when he Preached, it was not with superiority of speech or of man s wisdom because he was determined not to know anything among the Brethren except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 1 Cor 2:1-2 1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency (superiority) of speech or of (man s) wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save (except) Jesus Christ, and him crucified. Paul's Preaching was also not with enticing (persuasive) words but in demonstration (or manifestation) of the Spirit and of power (dunamis), so that their Faith would not stand in the wisdom of men. 1 Cor 2:3-5 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing (persuasive) words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration (the manifestation) of the Spirit and of power (dunamis): 5 That your faith (in the Cross and in Jesus) should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power (dunamis) of God. We have received the Holy Ghost so that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Therefore, we Preach what the Holy Ghost teaches us comparing Spiritual things with Spiritual! 1 Cor 2:12-13 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak (Preach), not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing Spiritual things with Spiritual. Please do not deceive yourself, if anyone among you seems to be wise in the things of this world, let him become a fool for Jesus. Let no man glory in men! 1 Cor 3:18-21 18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh (entraps) the wise in their own craftiness. 20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain (empty or profitless). 21 Therefore let no man glory (boast) in men. For all things are yours; Although you may have many instructors in Christ, many of them are boy-leaders and not actual Fatherfigures. For this reason, Timothy has been sent to every Church to remind you of the ways of Jesus Christ!

9 1 Cor 4:15-17 15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors (boy-leaders) in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten (birthed or regenerated) you through the gospel. 16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers (imitators) of me. 17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church. Remember that our Gospel comes to you not only in Preaching, but also in dunamis Power and in the Holy Ghost. 1Thes 1:5 5 For our gospel came not unto you in word (Preaching) only, but also in power (dunamis), and in the Holy Ghost, and in much (full) assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. CONCLUSION: In Conclusion, when Preaching for Revival, we should Preach about the Kingdom of God. Jesus Preached the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and stated that the time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand, therefore Repent and Believe the Gospel. Mark 1:14-15 14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. Today, Jesus has appointed those that Preach for Revival and all those that Believe, to cast out demons, heal the sick, and say to the people that the Kingdom of God has come unto them. (Luke 9:1-2, 10:1, 9) We have the exousia Power to do this because Jesus has given us this Authority. Luke 10:19 19 Behold, I give unto you power (exousia authority) to tread (to trample) on serpents (cunning snakes) and scorpions (those that sting), and over all the power (dunamis) of the enemy (Satan): and nothing (or nobody) shall by any means hurt you. Mark 16:17-18 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils (demons); they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up (loosen or remove) serpents (cunning snakes); and if they drink any deadly thing (poisonous), it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:20 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. We have the proof of this exousia Power because the Kingdom of God is within (inside) us.

10 Luke 17:21 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within (inside) you. Finally my Brethren, when we Preach for Revival with the dunamis Power of God, we are Preaching the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 12:28 Luke 11:20) 1 Cor 4:20 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word (preaching), but in power (dunamis). AMEN! TIMOTHY II
