Fr the last few mnths we have learned abut Jesus character (wh He is) and pwer (what He des) by explring His titles and adjectives frm A t Z. Nw we are ging t learn abut sme f the things that the Bible says WE are. Lessn Shw salt cntainer. What is salt used fr? (the main use we think f: seasning [bringing ut the flavr f] fd) If yu Ggle uses fr salt, yu will find pages and pages f infrmatin n ways t use it. There may be thusands f uses fr salt! Sme things yu can d with salt: Preserve meat (especially imprtant in the days befre refrigeratrs were invented; ne way is t heavily cat meat in salt and hang it up t dry ut) Sthe a bee sting (wet area and then cver with salt) Test the freshness f eggs (a fresh egg will sink in salty water, but ne that s ging bad will flat) Kill pisn ivy (spray salty, sapy water n the ivy) Ease a sre thrat (gargle salty water) Keep ants away (sprinkle salt acrss drs r windw sills; ants dn t like t walk acrss it) Melt snw and ice n driveways and sidewalks With all the things yu can d with salt, mst f us just put it n ur fd. What are sme salty things yu like t eat? (allw sme quick respnses) Listen t what Jb said abut salt in Jb 6:6: Read Jb 6:6 frm yur Bible. What des unsavury mean? (tasteless) Have yu ever eaten the white f an egg? Des it have any taste? (nt much withut salt) Lessn 1 We Are Salt Annette R. Evans Page 3 www.creative-sunday-schl-ideas.cm

Nw listen t what Jesus said abut salt in Matthew 5:13: Yu are the salt f the earth. But what gd is salt if it has lst its flavr? Can yu make it salty again? It will be thrwn ut and trampled underft as wrthless. (NLT) Hw are Christians fllwers f Jesus Christ like salt? (they bring the flavr f Jesus t the things they tuch; they represent Jesus t the wrld; things are better when they are arund) Salt brings ut the taste f things, but what if yur salt itself has n taste. What gd is it? (n gd) Where d Christians get their flavr their saltiness their ability t bring ut the gd in the things arund them? (frm Jesus) If we lse Jesus, we lse ur saltiness ur gdness. Besides bringing ut the flavr in things, salt brings ut the thirst in peple. When yu eat a lt f salty things, what d yu want t drink? (hpefully water J ) Listen t what Jesus said in Jhn 7:37-38: Read Jhn 7:37-38 frm yur Bible. Verse 39 says that Jesus was talking abut the Hly Spirit being the water that quenches ur thirst. He s talking abut a spiritual thirst: deep dwn inside, every human lngs fr a relatinship with Jesus Christ. As Christians, we are salty. We can help make peple thirsty t knw Jesus. Have a student attach the picture/wrds fr Salt t the We Are display bard. Life Applicatin Did yu knw that if yu lse t much salt, yu can develp a cnditin called hypnatremia (hī'pō-nəә-trē'mē-əә)? Hypnatremia causes a persn t get very sick and cnfused and can even cause seizures r death. Lessn 1 We Are Salt Annette R. Evans Page 4 www.creative-sunday-schl-ideas.cm

I think ur wrld is suffering frm spiritual hypnatremia. Peple are cnfused and dying. The wrld needs mre salt mre Christians t: Make things better when they are arund. Make peple thirsty t knw Gd. Jesus said we are the salt f the earth, but we aren t any gd if we ve lst ur flavr. Let s pray right nw and ask Jesus t help us t fllw Him mre clsely and be the kind f Christians wh make peple want t knw Him. Lead the kids in prayer respnse t lessn. 8:05-8:15 BIBLE SKILLS Use the Bks f the Bible display bard t pint things ut as yu ask these questins: Hw many bks are in the Bible? (66) Hw many bks are in the Old Testament? (39 [3 letters in the wrd Old and 9 letters in the wrd Testament]) Hand ut Bibles. Remind students t handle Bibles carefully and t help yunger students find verses. Open yur Bible almst in the middle (a little bit clser t the frnt than the back) and find the bk f Jb. Find Jb 6:6. (Have a student read this verse ut lud.) Jb says salt is needed fr what? (t add taste r flavr [fr example, t eggs]; fr seasning) Hw many bks are in the New Testament? (27 [3 letters in the wrd New x 9 letters in the wrd Testament = 27]) Mst f the bks f the New Testament are Epistles. What des Epistle mean? (letter) Find Paul s letter t the Clssians, chapter 4, verse 6 (Clssians 4:6) in yur Bible. (Have a student read this verse ut lud.) Lessn 1 We Are Salt Annette R. Evans Page 5 www.creative-sunday-schl-ideas.cm

Our speech shuld always be seasned with what? (salt, grace) We shuld talk t peple with kindness and use gd manners. What are sme wrds we use when we have gd manners? (please, thank yu, excuse me, frgive me, etc.) We shuld seasn ur cnversatin with lts f these wrds! Chse a cuple f students t carefully cllect the Bibles. 8:15-8:30 ACTIVITY/SNACK Supplies: Salty snacks Water Plates, napkins, cups as necessary Remind kids: We are the salt f the earth. Wuld these snacks taste as gd withut salt? Will eating these snacks make yu thirsty? Christians add gd flavr t the wrld and help make peple thirsty fr the living water that cmes frm Jesus.
